DHS Is it still typical for ROTR to have long downtime frequently?

We were there last week and on two of the 3 days ROTR was temporarily closed for long periods. One of them we went through the pre show any transporter. After we were taken prisoner the line was extending into the storm trooper bay. Two more transporters unloaded and they announced a short delay. After 25 minutes or so they announced that the short delay would be a long delay and that they'd give everyone LL to come back later. They took us out through a hallway just forward of the transporter that definitely broke the theming. We went from a galaxy far far away to an office building close by. They could have at least let us grab a coffee in the cast break room!

Anyway, we went and rode ToT with a 30 minute standby and it was still down. Then we walked over to slinky dog and decided to use the LL there since RotR was still down. I think it came back up 45 minutes or so later after we left the park.

Then the next day it went down again in the morning. We were going to ride before heading out of town and just rode Star Tours and left.

I was surprised that there are still that many issues especially because the cannons are still stationary.

Can it run at reduced capacity if one of the elevators or one of the drop simulators isn't working?

Although, I would think that the could run just one side of Space Mountain instead of shutting down but they don't seem to do that.

It can.

They can run Space Mountain with just one side if necessary but generally don’t because then they can’t work on the other side to get it operating again.

I get that but, especially on the lower crowd days I would think it makes more sense to run at half capacity than have extended downtime and get back to full capacity. On busy days the down time makes sense.

The ride is actually multiple systems, it’s:
-Simulator on a carousel
-A trackless ride
-2 Elevator Lifts
-4 ToT lifts

That’s not counting the effects, the cannons or the AAs. Yes it still has long downtimes and it likely always will.

As soon as I rode it, shortly after it opened I knew this was going to have a LOT of required upkeep needed. I was almost hoping they'd open it in Tokyo so I knew they'd actually keep up with all of the maintenance 😅

Rise is a very technically complex ride that will always come with downtime and issues as it's simply a first of its kind. Disney has likely (or hopefully) learned some lessons of how to improve these complex attractions based on what they see being common issues with attractions like Rise.

That being said, it is not always a fault of the attraction.

Having so many friends who work in parks both in Florida and California, it is just as likely that a ride is experiencing downtime because of the action or inaction of a guest than it is the ride has had a malfunction. Especially on rides like Rise, Indy, Rat, and Runaway Railway which are all very sensitive to loose items falling onto the floor from a ride vehicle.

This is very similar to our experience at rise in the same time period, so we may have been in the same line. The first CM who came out and told us it would be a short delay said to a bunch of us that they "really mean it" when they say take off hats and such, because the delay was caused by a hat falling onto the ride floor. (As mentioned by this poster). The CM then came back and announced the delay would be longer, we got LLs and evacuated through that same hallway.

It makes you wonder, did they build this attraction knowing it will be impossible to keep running or did they actually think everything is fine; it worked fine in the lab when we tested it a little?

When we look at this and a less technical Tiana, it feels like there is no consideration for the up time of an attraction; “we already got their money, what are they going to do?”

Well, there's a lot of pressure in theme parks for new headliners to be mind-blowing and fresh. That requires new technology and, often, downtime. Especially for a dark ride like this. I imagine this is why they build so many roller coasters--they are flashy but don't require as many (breakable) effects as a dark ride since you move so quickly. And we do see that Cosmic Rewind and Tron have great reliability.

They could have built a Fantasyland-style Star Wars ride but we would have skewered them for being lazy. It would hardly ever break down, though. At least they had the forethought to build Smuggler's Run, too, which almost never fully closes. This is a concern is have with the forthcoming Door Coaster: the ride system will likely have a lot of issues and there's no backup ride. No one will run into the new show if the coaster is down at park open. DHS is a rather frustrating park for the guest because it is filled with headliners that break down a lot. Monsters, Inc. is unlikely to address that meaningfully.
