As disabled Vietnam vet this sounds like a good deal and may bring me back to WDW. Truly no blackout dates?
Disney Celebrates America Military Salute Tickets and Disney Military Salute Tickets are valid for visits January 1, 2026, through December 18, 2026. All ticket types require an advance park reservation and are subject to the following block out dates:
  • March 29 through April 11, 2026
  • November 22 through November 28, 2026
Tickets and options expire and may not be used after December 18, 2026.

They are doing a military pass to compete against Universal. They offer something very similar called the military freedom pass, and it is around $240. It doesn't offer any AP benefits like discounts or parking but is very cheap.

No
I have a very good family friend who would purchase the $499/year pass for us, as they have no desire to go to WDW themselves, but I don't think that will work will it? It appears the service member has to be there to activate the tickets and must be in the travel party.

I've also read that if you order directly from Shades of Green they come activated. If anyone has any experience on this I'd really love to know. My friend was like "I'll absolutely sponsor those for you" since it says you can give them to friends but they are not Disney folks so no risk of them running up against their six ticket limit.

The terms, conditions, and process have not been posted on the Shades website yet. You're conflating the terms and conditions of the Salute tickets with this offering.

Those are two different ticket types.
