Would just replace one group cancelling with another group cancelling, probably easier to just give him a time out and then bring him back to TV in a week or 2, whether he returns in any way likely depends on if the show was making money or not, if it wasn’t breaking even it’s an easy excuse to eliminate a money loser without risking contract lawsuits.
It’s the exact opposite of an “easy excuse.” This is adjacent to the very silliest argument circulating widely on line regarding the fiasco - “well, Disney already wanted to fire Kimmel and this gave them an excuse.” They could have ended the show a year ago and it would have been a blip in the trade press. They could have ended it two weeks ago and, even with the Colbert mess, it would have been a one day story at best. . It’s a disaster for Disney. There is no moment in the shows history when it would have been worse to cancel it.

Agreed - since this is the lane that Iger has the most experience in it’s an even bigger disaster for him and his legacy. At least with theme parks one can shrug shoulders and go “well he doesn’t understand the parks.”

Josh Gad is pretty riled up, and he’s their prized Olaf. I think they have a talent coup coming.
Disney is one of the biggest employers in the industry, the talent need them just as much as Disney needs the talent… probably more because there’s only a few major studios and there’s tens of thousands of actors who will happily take Josh’s place.

The actors publicly speaking out for each other is inspiring but could also result in the downfall of many careers. If they replaced Gadd with a new voice actor tomorrow most the audience likely wouldn’t even notice.

I don’t think anyone here would care as much if Kimmel was simply cancelled due to underperformance, or as a business decision.

It’s everything that led to this moment that can’t be separated.
Absolutely correct. The only time I ever watched his show was back when he’d have special episodes every year after the LOST season finales and I don’t seem to know a lot of people that did watch him regularly so if he had been cancelled for low ratings that would have made sense to me and I wouldn’t have given it a 2nd thought but that’s not what happened and what did take place seems like it’s worth everyone’s attention.

You know what's funny?
I actually still listen to Tucker occasionally - sometimes I agree and disagree but either way his voice and opinions should be able to be shared

Kimmel could go to a cable network or streaming platform. But the public airwaves have certain rules. They don't hand out broadcasting licenses with no conditions. And one of those conditions is for the broadcaster to act in the interest of the public. And at the same time, the affiliate Nexstar and others had enough and decided to act.

I watch several shows on YouTube hosted by former TV actors, many on the other side as me, I find them far more interesting and “real” when they aren’t towing the company line.

It’s fascinating and enlightening to see someone bounce back and forth from one side to the other based on specific topics rather than simply parroting whatever they are told to parrot… also far more compelling.

As mentioned support is coming from both sides now -

As they look to try to maybe bring the show back -

At this point, I think the odds of Jimmy Kimmel Live returning next week are more likely than not.

When people cite Kimmel’s declining ratings as evidence of the show’s declining profitability, do you think they realize that ratings only include viewership on broadcast and cable, and excludes streaming and YouTube? With the rapid decline in cable subscriptions and the rise of YouTube and streaming, it’s worth mentioning that Kimmel’s YouTube channel has over 20 million subscribers and 13 billion views.

Fully agree. What is relevant here is Disneys behavior and it’s consequences.
There is no way to have a meaningful discussion of this subject without a discussion of the politics at the root. Moreover, no aspect or action of TWDC can be understood without an understanding of the politics at work at the federal, state, local and international levels at the various venues in which TWDC operates. And, as with a variety of other subjects, because political ideologies are not allowed to be included in discussions on this forum, the real cause, effect and reasons why TWDC functions the way it does is never addressed. As The Mom has told us many times before, there are other forums where you can learn about the politcal workings of TWDC.

the issue now is that if they hire him back the other side will cancel subscriptions.

It’s really messy. For Disney - the best thing would have been to keep him hired and just say they are “working with media partners” and let it settle down before making a decision.

No, they won’t. The people that hate Kimmel enough to care about his comments aren’t subscribed anyway. And, if they were subscribers, they would’ve canceled when Gina Carano’s contract wasn’t renewed. And it’s not like Disney gained any subscribers due to this whole fiasco.

Also, Kimmel was not fired. The show is simply on pause, at the moment. There are active negotiations right now to bring the show back.

I don’t know how many they’d lose from the other side but they would definitely solidify the pre-existing beliefs that they strongly favor one side, I think the bigger risk is losing the extremes on the other side permanently.

I still stand by my bell curve though, we’re probably talking about 10% of the total subscribers who fall on the far sides of the curve. A large enough portion to affect the bottom line but nowhere near enough to doom D+ either way. Bringing him back doesn’t guarantee those that left will come back either, they may just be losing another couple percent on top of the couple percent they already lost.
