We love it around here too. It was so cool to see it during Universal Studio's Fan Fest.
I did look into that claim of Disney trying to buy the rights and allegedly Tomorrow Studios + Netflix already had them so that's why it fell through. Tbh I feel like Oda would've said no regardless.

I hope that comes to Orlando someday. I wanted to go so bad but couldn't due to my schedule.

Actually I believe they tried back in 2016 to acquire it but a deal couldn't be reached, at least according to the reports at the time.
I think it was to adapt it. They could never buy Shueisha, outright. It would be like trying to buy Nintendo. The Japanese government would never allow it.

Over the last 10 years the Japanese government has been less concerned with foreign ownership of Japanese companies, quite a few have sold even recently as the Yen has been weak. So I don’t think that would have been an issue, especially since it’s a smaller brand compared to something like a Sony or Nintendo.

Also I only know what I read, as the particulars are not public we don’t know all the specifics of what the deal would have entailed.

Yeah, but do you really think Japan is going to let the biggest anime/manga IPs go to Disney? Shueisha is still one of Japan’s biggest companies, in terms of cultural impact. One Piece, Naruto, Jojo, new releases like Jujustu Kaisen, and Chainsaw Man. And of course (Besides One Piece, and Doraemon) the biggest most celebrated anime/manga in all of Japan’s history, Dragon Ball. No way the Japanese government would let them go in the hands of an American company.

Some smaller company sure. But I feel like Nintendo, Sony, Shueisha, and Toho. Would be one of the few companies the government would get involved in.

Note: I did double check, Shueisha is already owned by a rich family, known as the Oga Family. And their company, the Hitotsubashi Group. Disney would have to pay them a lot of money. For them even to consider this. And even then, they’ll probably laugh them out of the room. Like Nintendo did to Microsoft, years ago.

Yes I do think they would consider it if it came up. This year will set a record of the number of domestic Japanese companies sold to foreign entities, at 157 so far this year. And these aren't small companies. This isn't like the 90s or early 2000s. The Yen has been down for a few years now and they are trying to spark an economic recovery for a 2 year long recession they have been having.

So I have no doubt that if Disney decided to buy a Japanese publisher there wouldn't be much resistance.
