Our next journey took place in June and in all honesty, I wasn't planning on doing a full report. But I did take notes and since drama tends to follow us, there seems to be enough to scribble about. Besides I enjoy it! lol

I'm going to try to power through...

Here we go...

The Cool Kids' Anniversary Trip
June 6-25

Who are the cool kids? Us! Mary & Ross

It was our 33rd anniversary and we decided to get away by ourselves. It was 33 years ago when I planned our honeymoon to WDW. I had booked the Grand Floridian for 5 nights, when our travel agent (yeah I used one of them way back when) told us about a new resort that just opened and it was a value Disney property and for the same amount of money we could stay much longer. So I switched us to the newly opened Dixie Landings. I wish I had some photos from then, but I don't. Anyhoo, we had originally booked our anniversary trip at POP, but I decided to switch it to Dixie.... I mean Riverside. I will admit it was for more than sentimental reasons. I really wanted to have a hot tub available along with a quiet pool that we could use during non-pool hours. So we were set.

We left our car at my brother’s house in Rockland and took a Lyft to Westchester Airport. Normally, we would fly out of Newark, but Westchester was just a better time and price. For the record, Westchester airport is tiny. You walk through security and you’re at your gate. I’m not even exaggerating. There’s no shops, no Dunkin and no Starbucks.

I’m not complaining I’m just trying to give a good description of it. Although I did wish for an iced coffee while we waited for the flight. There is one store that sells a bit of everything, but the prices are out of control. I had to laugh.. the same box of chocolate that I paid a dollar for, was four dollars there.

Before the flight took off, a family with a mother, father and a small child probably about two years old, walked off the plane, followed by an employee. I say employee because it was not a flight attendant. The man was not in the JetBlue outfit, but he did have a uniform on. I couldn’t imagine what it happened. There didn’t seem to be any commotion that we heard, but as soon as they were off the plane, the door closed and off we went.

I was tired, but I have NEVER been able to sleep on planes. Ross however...

I settled for a movie and a drink...

Our flight was pretty uneventful thankfully. There was a few moments of terrible turbulence on the descent. The flight attendant said, “Welcome to Orlando. This was your first roller coaster ride.”

Our first stop at MCO, after the restrooms was Sunshine diner for a fresh squeezed OJ. Welcome to Florida!!

We ordered a lift from the airport to get to our resort. Right away I noticed there seem to be an unusual amount of traffic. Some of the signs on the road said use alternative routes eight lanes ahead closed. Later, I would see on the news that there was some sort of a horrible accident involving a tractor trailer And I guess this was the remnants of it.

We got to Riverside and I tried to take it all in. I have to admit, I got a bit emotional. Life has been so stressful back home… being away from it for a while felt liberating. As much as I love POP, being at Riverside, I felt like I was home.

We went to Disney Springs and had our usual first meal. It was excellent. We were absolutely starving. I don’t think either one of us really ate that day except for the small snacks on the plane.

We walked around a little bit. I went to the shine bar and got my refill mug of the moonshine margarita. I never knew about it – thanks TikTok! Lol. It was $25 and refills will be $16 – and it’s good forever!

Ross did something that shocked me tonight - He said he wanted to purchase a magic band. I was glad I had brought an extra safety band along with us. I don’t want him to lose this one! I was pleasantly surprised that they gave me a annual passholder discount I didn’t think they did on magic bands. The total was $38.

We took the boat back to Riverside. It had been a long time since we’ve done that and it was really nice. It was a beautiful night out.

Here comes some drama…. When we were ready to board, the woman in front of us was in a scooter. There were two scooters actually. Mother and daughter. The daughter got her scooter on the boat without a problem, but mom got her real wheel caught on the corner of the ramp. The cast member said to back up a little bit and then steer on straight. The woman, who was apparently not a seasoned scooter driver, hit reverse and went full speed backwards! She crashed into the guard rail. I was waiting for her to break right threw the railing and fly into the water! Everyone on the boat gasped. Luckily she was okay and she got onto the boat. When she exited the boat at French Quarter, she had a similar problem trying to navigate the ramp and three men had to help maneuver the scooter, with her on it, to get off the boat.

When we got back to the resort, we stopped at the lobby to get our anniversary pins and then filled up our mugs.

I really wanted to jump into the quiet pool for a while, but I was completely exhausted. By now, I have been up since three in the morning and Ross had been up since one in the morning. We completely crashed.
