many of the things that “just work” at Disney - shouldn’t on paper. The Matterhorn, submarines, monorail, etc. being a prime example. That area of the park is just perfect, but a complete thematic mess at the same time.

You raise a great point, but to me, Tiana’s next to Big Thunder is already quite jarring.

Splash may not have been a perfect fit thematically, but visually it was much more on theme for Frontierland than Tiana’s is.

Perhaps the issue wouldn’t be so pronounced if the Tiana’s and Thunder traded places. I think the problem is the “western town” of Frontierland (Diamond Horseshoe/Country Bears/Pecos Bill) is completely separated from Big Thunder by a New Orleans area.

I just get the vibe that Frontierland will be even worse than Adventureland (in terms of a hodgepodge of settings that don’t flow well into each other).

It is. None of the art shows the Tiana’s facing area of this expansion but I hope it helps this situation and doesn’t make it worse.

The art seems to show nods to big thunder / rainbow ridge close to big thunder - so I’m hoping the area near Tiana’s can create a little bayou country area.

I don’t hate the idea but MK already has the castle projection show and fireworks. No way they bring over another show and then leave DHS with no evening entertainment (apparently they project on the chinese theatre but not the same as F!)

I don’t think that would work thematically for the land that’s being pitched as only villains and no heroes.

But then DHS won't have a big nighttime extravaganza. Big fireworks are out because they set fire to the woods across the hiway.

North of TRON is a retention pond that can be moved and a big amphitheater could go there for nighttime fireworks viewing (while seated!) and maybe a daytime show.

It's one of those ideas that works on paper maybe but not in practice.

1. MK already has a very solid and beloved firework show and I don't forsee something at the very back of the park ever replacing it. A far smarter idea is to have a "second" firework viewing area from Villian's land with some new context for the existing fireworks.

2. It would be really strange if in Villian's land, the story was mostly about Mickey and him defeating the villians. I feel like this should be the land where the Villian's win and still live

3. HS needs the firework show and can expand to other places much easier. Plus I worry that ToT would certainly be a casuality of that expansion as it's way too close to not be affected. (would prob get a retheme to whatever franchise goes there)

4. HS has some better expansion plots that are more underutilized (BaTB, Echo Lake, behind AC, etc) I don't think the park needs more than 2 more lands in the immediate future and could instead work on expanding its current offerings in existing lands (Star Wars 3rd attraction, TSL expansion/additional attraction, retheme/moving Star Tours, Monsters Inc possible expansion, Sunset Showcase Expansion, new ride out of AC's transformation)

Surely, the only way the HM's elevation is going to change is if they build the new path so it's on the same plain as the HM facade. If they don't do that, how will it not still be an old house on a hill?

Yes because of the medium you can’t get every detail correct so you go for an authentic feel. Just like film. It’s not a foreign concept. It’s everywhere at WDW.

The house on the hill isn’t just about elevation differences. It’s an other place, the place people avoid. It’s physically, spatially and socially separate from its environment. The Haunted Mansion is not supposed to be a focal point placed on the nexus of multiple guests paths points. It was placed so that it is spatially separated because that’s part of its story.

The Haunted Mansion is not supposed to be a focal point placed on the nexus of multiple guests paths points. It was placed so that it is spatially separated because that’s part of its story.

Why not? It can still be the old house on the hill, now I just have the option to also walk right past it... just like at DLR, TDL, HKDL, DLP. Honestly WDW is the only HM that's at a dead end.

To be completely honest, where HM is now it has always been hard for me to appreciate it. You can't see it very well at all, and the only thing I really notice is the massive pile up of lines extending out and crowding Liberty Square.

Being able to walk past something is not the same as it being a weenie. But also, the context isn’t as you present. Disneyland has a different manor design that intentionally downplays the haunted nature but it was also the last major structure along the path when it was built. Payton Manor has a similar siting with spatial separation, there are not multiple paths leading to it. The same mansion structure was intended for Westernland at Tokyo Disneyland but moved to provide a space for Big Thunder Mountain. Tokyo Disneyland also has what is usually considered the weakest placement.

Okay so now the HM is that creepy house on the hill everyone passes by "a little quicker" because they are scared of it. The story does not require for one bit that it needs to be a deadend.

It's situated out of town, surrounded by the forest.
