The film is astonishing. It's an excellent example of how to create suspense even when every knows it all turns out right in the end.

Just remove the Star Wars elements and bring back the original music! You don't even need to bring back the original set pieces, I just want to eliminate the cognitive dissonance of seeing "rebel ships" launch via a canon from the 1800's.

I actually think Rian steered the franchise back to Lucas' intentions that the Sequel Trilogy has a hermit Luke disillusioned by the hubris of the Jedi Order. I do think the B & C plots (Rose/Finn and Holdo/Poe) are tedious bores on repeat viewings. But the Luke/Rey/Kylo stuff is excellent.
