Where in the World Isn't Bob Saget?

We ate lunch at BearTooth Cafe in Cooke City, Montana (population 140). it's a very quirky small town just outside the northwest entrance to Yellowstone park. The food was awesome though - we each had a shredded beef chimichanga that was quite authentically Mexican, with fresh salsa and guac that was sooooo tasty. We walked around the town for a few minutes and decided that we prefer our little cabin here to these..

and hope that our hotel tomorrow is better than this...

Anyway, that town is at the end of the BearTooth Pass, which I have driven years ago - very scenic with multiple switchbacks and sweeping views, but few guardrails. We decided to pass on that this time. But here's why they call it Bear Tooth I believe...

While I haven't gotten to it yet, I was scolded (nicely) by a woman for not going all the way to the NE entrance to officially drive the Beartooth Hwy. Like I was just a few miles away from the most beautiful scenery and we missed it. Cooke City looks cute though.

You've also confirmed that we saw an osprey on our drive to the west entrance.

And I can't believe someone was walking a dog in the middle of a bison herd. I mean, I know people do dumb things and we saw plenty of it, but still! Before we went, one of my coworkers shared her friend's video of them being chased down by a couple of elk cows up in Mammoth. Her friend insisted they weren't too close, but after further discussions, it sounds like they had no clue how far 25 yards was and were probably only about 10ft away at most.

Safe travels!!!

It amazes me how dumb some people can be,
Years ago, while camping at Allegheny State Park in Salamanca, NY this happened. Just before dark the bears all seemed to show up at what was then the "park dump". They would show up and forage through the garbage for edibles. During that time many campers would drive there to get a close look and take pictures of the bears. This one evening a lady was trying to get a very large bear to face her so she could get a good picture of his/her (didn't get close enough to make that determination) face. Not sure if she was expecting a big toothy smile or what. When the bear ignored her she picked up a dried up piece of bread and proceeded to walk up and poke the bear in the ribs with it to get his/her attention.

She must have been in a good place, luck wise, because all the bear did was roar and she ran away. To bad, we were all kind of routing for her future nickname to be stumpy. In all my life I don't think I have seen a more significant display of stupid. This was in the early 60's and I can't say that the park management were made up of Rhodes Scholars either. To even allow the public in there at that time just seems like they were playing Russian Roulette with the guests.

Wow - that’s “asking for it” stupid.

When I was a kid, we saw a kid trying to feed a black bear with a marshmallow on a stick. And there was a creek between the kid and his family/car. People do INCREDIBLY dumb things in Yellowstone. They seem to think the animals are tame because they are used to people.

For some reason my phone won't let me type so I had to wait til we got to our hotel (at 10,000 feet!!!) . What I had tried to post was that we ate lunch at a very busy In & Out, which we weren't all that impressed with. We've been in and out of smoke all day, and apparently this is why.

There were times when we couldn't even see the mountains next to us. We even saw one of the helicopters that drops the flame retardant stuff on the fire.

Here’s a better shot of the fire...

Anyway, it was a long day of driving, and this altitude really takes your breath away. There are fireworks to watch tonight for some Fall Fest, so I'm hoping we're still awake for that. Tomorrow morning we'll drive to Bryce Canyon, spend a few hours there, then drive back to Salt Lake City to fly out on Monday. Hopefully the flight over Florence will be OK.

At the rate it's moving right now you could walk back and still beat it. 2 mph it will probably just die out before long. That's only 48 miles a day.

We got an early start today, and headed out to Bryce Canyon. Our journey took us through Red Canyon in the Dixie National Forest, which gave us a tiny taste of what was to come...

We got to Bryce about 9 AM and visited a few spots, stopped for lunch at the Lodge, then visited some more. I can't descibe how awesome this place is, but here's a few of the tons of pictures I took today there:

Bryce Canyon has always been a favorite of ours, and we celebrated our 25th anniversary dining at the Lodge 10 years ago, so it was pretty sweet to go back there to celebrate our 35th this year. When we originally planned this trip we hadn't planned to get down to Bryce, but the opportunity came up, and I'm so glad we went. Tomorrow we fly home and back to reality, but this has been an awesome trip for us!
