I was reading about how visitors are rude to cm's and I truly believe it. But in2004 we were checking into ASMusic. I t was about 6 am and this cm came out of the back with an attitude right from the begininning. I gave her the information for checking in and she saod What are you crazy for staying her 14 days. I looked at her and at first I thought she was kidding, well she wasn't. She kept making comments during the whole check in process. When we walked away I said well guys I'll say it welcome and let's have a magical time. I reported her but nothing was said and not even an apology.:brick: :brick: :brick:

My only real incident with a Disney CM came at Saratoga Springs Resort. I was there with a couple of friends for the weekend, some of which were first time Disney visitors. The time frame we were staying there was during the Belmont horse race. While down at the pool we decided to head over to the tiki bar to watch the big race. I ordered a beer and the rest of my friends ordered waters. I thought she was going to have a Hernia! She started saying how we were wasting her time, crowding her bar (no one was even attempting to make their way towards her), making sneers at how we must have good jobs because we were spending so much (her pt was to insult us because we were standing around her bar and not buying drinks). Heaven forbid we wanted to watch a horse race and a horse racing themed RESORT! She was the nastiest woman I have ever met...The sad part is, just before that I was telling the first time visitors how exceptional Disney is in everything they do...We reported it, but no idea what happened

She was probably angry because she thought you were cutting her tip action. There's really no call for either customers or CMs to be rude to each other.

You know what they say though...good help is hard to find.

That's about how it was for me too when I had encounters with magically challenged CMs. The only time anyone really showed any compassion for my problems was when I relayed my story to a CM who wasn't directly involved and had no power to fix it. Usually I get a free button or something for my trouble.
Now There are 10 times as many great CMs who do everything they can to make things right. Unfortunately it's the bad apples that really stick in your craw and make the whole barrel look bad.

People have bad days at work...even CM's. They're not superhuman, cut them some slack!

If you encounter a bad or rude CM, just move on and forget it. Unless they insulted or physically harmed you get over it. Your vacation is too important to worry about one bad encounter with a CM.

I don't know about that ... I deal with rude folks on the job on a daily basis and trust me when I say that if I were rude in return I would no longer be employed. That said, why on earth would I put up with outright rudeness from a Disney castmember when I'm paying (and dearly ;) ) to be there on my vacation?

I've always expected only the best from Disney; it's one of the many reasons I save so long to visit - why would this be an exception?

The rudeness from said CM in my case followed a complaint I made over a service/item I paid money for and didn't receive. If your not going to give me the service, give me my money back, and stow the attitude. No one is entitled to the money that I work hard for, gratis. I wouldn't dare treat my customers or employees with such careless disregard back home, yes, even when I'm having a bad day. You don't like your job? Quit and get out of the way for someone that wants it.

HAHA...this post is so far off the mark. There is a reason they go through a "Disney University" before they start working, a reason they cant say "I dont know" to your questions, a reason they use a double finger point, it is because their organization is elite. I once walked around with a friend of mine who is in charge of all of ride safety at EPCOT, I watched him write people down in his PDA who were not smiling when serving guests. (a little extreme I know)....This isnt 6 flags, McDonalds, or any of those places...its "The Happiest Place on Earth", if you can't meet the standards then get out...Simple as that.

Maybe just cuz I'm a cast member, but that doesn't seem extreme at all to me.

We don't go through DU, though. Other than a few hour training course.

Ok, so maybe its b/c I was a CM at one point or have worked with the public for too long, but for every 1 bad egg @ disney, there are 100 great ones. So you were there for 14 days and had ONE bad encounter, shame, but what about the other hundreds of castmembers you came in contact with? Did you make a thread thanking them? I'm guessing you didn't, so do us (us = those who work to make your trips/visits enjoyable) a favor and give us some credit.

Also, Ive come to the conclusion that some people think TOO high of disney castmembers (Meaning, they EXPECT, instead of let things go and enjoy) and think they should be perfect at all times. We are all human, castmember or not, just remember that.

/end rant

It's true, CMs are people who have bad days.

But it's also true what cb3k said. You are expected to overcome your bad day and be better than that to people. Disney does expect more than that. When you do overcome your bad day and treat people magically, it comes back to you. It's too bad these CMs weren't feeling it that day... too bad for them and too bad for the guests.

There's a reason I haven't returned to work at Disney since my internship and it is that it is a very high standard they hold... not just in how you treat people but in appearance and everything, and I just wanted to have reasonable expectations on me rather than elite expectations on me. (I know, I'm a chicken). That, and the money wasn't great.

But even now where my employer does have reasonable expectations, I find myself trying to meet those elite expectations Disney wants their CMs to meet. Once you can do it, you're hooked.

The CMs who can't do it won't last long.

But to be fair, the OP is describing this ONE CM, not all of CM. So this isn't a complaint about the attitudes of CM in general, just this one.

Disney is Disney because it has set a higher standard for itself, and its guests, especially the loyal ones, expect it. That's why most of us go there often, and long to be there on most days. I don't expect every CM to smile at me or go out of their way to make my stay pleasant, but I certainly do NOT expect to be insulted by the very people who should consider me as their guest. You just don't treat guests that way. This CM, from the way it has been described, seemed to go out of her way to be rude. There's zero justification for that, no matter how bad of a day one has. If she is having a bad day and do not feel like being "friendly" and "cheerful", that is perfectly understandable. But to hurl those kinds of insult? There's no excuse.

Luckily for me, I haven't encountered anything close to something this bad. All my experiences with CM's have been wonderful. But I do know that if I do, I will lodge a complaint.

Exactly...and like I said...I have had ONE CM that stands out as bad...and that is with 40 + visits this year alone...(takes hands off keyboard and pats himself on back) jk....but really, I don't think anyone is trying to get on the CM's case, by saying that there is ONE TIME, I feel that is almost complimenting all the rest of you...anyways, for all you CMs out there, keep making everyones experience as great as they typically end up being!

Yeah, sorry that you had that experience! If I was ever having a bad day and a guest was not being rude to me, I would probably act politely or indifferently, but not rudely! I don't get it...

They don't go though a "Disney University", they go through a "Traditions" class, which is usually held in the Disney University building, but not always.

The class used to be 3 days long (way back when I went through it), but now it is less than a day. All those things you said are still taught, but for the most part WDW is way too big for most managers to care about stuff like that. Disney is hurting for people to work for them, they have advertisements and job fairs all the time and they recruit college and international students like crazy.

It might have been strict to the point of obsessivness, but not nowadays! Sure, some managers still care, but no one is getting fired because they didn't smile or even if they said "I Don't Know" to a guest.
