DHS Disney Animation-Inspired Experience Coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Andrew C

You know what's funny?
We’ll just have to wait and see, won’t we. Unlike you, I don’t pre-judge attractions before they open.
Pre-judge or not, you seem to eat up a lot of the garbage they have been giving us anyways. 🤷‍♂️ Goes back to my point of settling for mediocrity rather than expecting more from Disney.

I have a sneaking suspicion you won’t see this, but is it your contention that positive posters make more substantive posts? It’s the critical posters who tend to write long, detailed examinations of where the parks are failing by drawing on evidence and experience while the positive posters tend very, very heavily towards passive aggression and “shut up, I like it.” Which of the positive posts in this thread do you feel really opens up space for a conversation?

I’d say that there are un-substantive posters on either side of the optimism-pessimism aisle. Of which you are not one.

It’s more the individual poster than where their opinion lies. Though we all sometimes dig in a little!

I’m not hot on this project in general. Disney Jr and Mermaid needed elaborate new facades for me to jump up and down.

However, this particular new installation is generally much higher effort than I was expecting. To the point with how central it is, I wonder if this drawing show becomes completely overstuffed. There was a ton of accessibility gate keeping out at conservation station that prevented kids from wanting to repeat the show over and over.

I hope there is some actual acknowledgement that we are in a real former animation building. The short is incredibly sentimental though and I must say it at least hits me, I don’t have concerns personally that it was the jumping off point.

Thanks. You’re a great poster and this is all true.

I’ll note my skepticism HAS been misplaced in the past - I was doubtful about the Skyliner and it’s a huge win, just wonderful. I love it and want it expanded.

I don’t think my skepticism is misplaced here, though.

We’ll have to see how this compares to DreamWorks land. They both have the same sinful setup. Areas that should have been up for major redevelopment over and over again and instead they chose another temporary kick at the can.

Though at least for @Casper Gutman ‘s sake there doesn’t seem like they are adding a beer tap here like they did DreamWorks Land. 🤣

This might have more potential than Po though. Something I found particularly jankily executed.

Really?

Smuggler’s Run: disappointing, MMRR: lackluster, TSL: crap, Zoogether: crap, Tiana’s: creative miss. I could go on. I think you’re projecting. I think your expectations are a moving target in order to suit your narrative that Disney is satisfied with “good enough.”
Hey, what’s wrong with MMRR?!?!

Some posters are so negative.

Dreamworks Land is such a huge miss - a real sign of how post-pandemic Uni has lost its way (although I love Epic despite its issues). The fact that they just removed a splash pad from the area shows what a poorly thought out rush job it was. It’s a very good analogy here.

Dreamworks land? Random or did someone else mention it? but that is mediocre. To say the least. lol.

Me, sorry that’s just where my head went and you were the most recent person to reply to. The projects remind me a lot of one another. Same conversations were had, probably same outcomes.

Both also done of haste because they needed to rush something to marketing and both sad white flags that they were forgoing redevelopments. Both will be mild but not sufficient cosmetic improvements.

There were some “choices” when they were building Epic. Hoping those are a thing of the past.

Anyways. Off topic now.

You thought the boards would be happy about firing a live performer and replacing them with a tv screen?

I’m sorry, the enthusiasm for this attraction seems so insanely forced. It’s the most minor step up from Launch Bay imaginable and it will block development of this space for a decade or more. I’m excited for the AK changes. I think Villains has massive potential. But this? Frankly, I think a lot of the same posters would have made a lot of the same comments ten years ago about Launch Bay - “It’ll really liven up the dead Animation building!” “We’re getting a BB8 AA!” “MGM needs more things for families to do! They’ll love seeing Chewie!”
Also, wouldn't it be more exciting if there was actual animation being produced there?

Furthermore, the experience fits perfectly in the theme of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, unlike The Animation Experience at DAK, which is an upgrade in and of itself.
It would indeed fit the original theme of Disney's Hollywood Studios had they not spent the last ten years trying to erase that theme in favor of random IP lands. That being said I have to admit it does look pretty nice and maybe even worth losing the arch for.

I mean this is pretty much my take. I don't necessarily think "live person" versus "recorded segment" makes this good or bad. I'm actually surprised it makes so much difference to people, but admittedly different folks have different priorities. I definitely think that execution is what matters and you can have someone in person who is not that engaging and you can have recorded stuff that is poorly done (I'm looking at you Zootopia show). This could be great or this could be bad but hinging that appraisal on whether there is someone in person doing the teaching seems overally dramatic to me.
Watching a video tutorial of how to draw a character is literally something you can just do right now. There’s a magic to someone creating right before your eyes.

See, when they first announced this, my reaction was something akin to "well, it will be better than Launch Bay, but probably nothing special".
Launch Bay was literally just a low-grade Star Wars exhibit that somehow lasted eleven years that even for a Star Wars fan felt redundant as does Star Tours when you literally have a whole land based on Star Wars, set during the wrong trilogy in my opinion but regardless.

The one thing I will add though is that while I think this sounds perfectly nice, I would rather have seen Animation demolished and a large new land added instead (with a connection to the RNR area). And the one downside I see with this development is that it probably pushes anything like that off for quite a few years - even though it would be the most logical next thing to address to help DHS.
I personally would have put MMRR there sparing the Great Movie Ride.

Who says we want the area redeveloped? Disney’s Hollywood Studios should absolutely celebrate the Disney lot and the wonderful art of animation. It has a strong reason for being, unlike Launch Bay.
Again, it would make MUCH more sense if they had kept the Studio theme.

I think that the concept of an in person Olaf together with actual animators from the studio directing the drawing class sounds actually pretty cool to me. Especially given that there will be a rotating of different animators/characters being drawn so that allows for some good variety.

Now, I happen to like Olaf doing breaking fourth wall so I get that wouldn't be everyon's cup of tea. That reminds me that I'd love to see them do another round of Olaf Presents on D+.

Again, though, I don't want to seem like I think this is some amazing groundbreaking concept. But overall, this animation experience looks like a solid positive addition that will help make DHS a better park in the nearer term. I mean, the park is too dependant on rides and scheduled/limited shows - having a nice indoor area to explore is a good job of addessing what the park needs.
I am sure TDO would be very happy to hire you since you think CM's are unnecessary to most attractions. There is a reason why things like GMR closed.

It still has a studio theme. It's called Hollywood Studios. It's no longer a working studio, and the concept is now that the lands and attractions allow you to step into worlds from film or television, but the entire core of the park is still very much supposed to feel like a studio.
