Where in the World Isn't Bob Saget?

My two rounds of Fall Parent teacher Conferences are done. I have about 108 students (and the 7th graders twice a day). On Monday night 8 parents showed up and tonight 3 parents showed up. I would have had two more but one mom emailed and said she was at a conference so that was an email conversation. And another mom emailed that she couldn't make it because she had emergency surgery so we emailed for that one too; I give her a lot of credit for that because I know her surgery was a little traumatic and one of her concerns was missing PT conferences.

The conferences I had went well. Every parent thanked me for sending home weekly progress reports. So maybe that is why I didn't have a lot of parents show up, because they can check grades so easily online now and just email with questions at any time. So I'm caught up on grading and have my plans and copies made for next week done. Tomorrow we have off so I can't wait to relax and read my book!

I can't remember if I shared this here or only with coworkers, but I feel like the conference format has to be reimagined. With modern day technology and school messaging apps, I'm telling parents the same things they already know. It's nice to talk to them in person, but I don't feel like anybody gets much out of it.

Your surgery part reminds me of 4 years ago. I was sitting waiting for a virtual conference (it was the first full year out of covid). They never came on. They were new to the district, and I didn't know them well, so I assumed they were just flaky. About 10 minutes into the conference, I get a message from the dad saying they apologize that they missed the conference, but the mom was in labor, getting ready to give birth. 😂 The dad had said they could reschedule for the following week, and I replied back saying they don't need to worry about conferences with a newborn baby, and I would type up a summary and send it home. And now that I know them better, they are the nicest people ever who would never bail out on a conference. The mom is huge into our Parent Teacher Circle. They provided a meal for us on our first night of conferences, and I sat and talked with her a while as she sat in the workroom all night long to talk to all of us. I thanked her for what she does for the PTC, and she didn't accept it and said it was crazy that I was thanking her, when she is the one who should be thanking us. She went on and started crying because of how passionate she is in supporting public school teachers. So a great family.

I agree that conferences need to be revamped somehow. When I first started teaching fall conferences would be so busy but spring not so much. Our elementary teachers still schedule theirs so it is busy but I'm sure they are sharing just as much on a regular basis as you are.

That mom you mentioned sounds like a treasure! So nice to hear about supportive parents.

Here’s a random school story on my day off: I have a picture of myself and Imagineer Bob Gurr hanging up in my classroom. I have had it up for a couple years and a few kids have asked who it was . But this year many of my 7th grade students have noticed it and asked if it was me and Walt Disney. They seem excited about the fact That I met him. But sadly I have to tell them no and explain who the person really is and that I wasn’t alive when Walt was alive. But I like that they know that Walt Disney was a real person, many people don’t nowadays.

I also have a picture of myself and Tom Nabbe hanging up and they just ask if he is my dad or grandpa! 😄. It reminds me I should print a picture of me and Tony Baxter and see what they say.

When you're the leader, you don't have to follow.
According to X/Twitter all week - “The Dodgers are going to sweep the Jays 4-0.”

Not today. Not in Vladdy’s House.

Funniest thing - in Ohtani’s final at bat, the crowd was chanting “We don’t need you. We don’t need you”.
For those who don’t know, the Jays offered Ohtani similar money to what the Dodgers paid him, minus all the deferral nonsense. He didn’t take it … freed up more money to sign Vladdy.
