Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Honestly all of this irrelevant, as its just the vanity of being named the "top studio" at the end of the year.

No one (other than us here) in these discussions cares about the "profit" at the end of the year. That is for the quarterly investors call, not for a movie discussion.
True, we’re a small group, the vast majority just care if a movie entertains them or not, they don’t care what it cost, what it grossed, what it profited/lost… technically true of 99% of what’s Disney related, Star Wars related, Marvel related… also, it’s only us superfans / nerds that find any of this interesting.

Any chance at all either ever happens?

As far as budgets go…this next movie is goona be a doozy? I’ll be clear on record: they’re going to lie about it.

It’s a mess from reports…a million characters…not even a complete script…deep in shooting - which means reshoots and huge money.

Can’t wait
Doubtful, I’m a capitalist at heart but the investment funds takeover of everything has had a ton of negative consequences.

For what it’s worth just to keep things honest, Fantastic Four’s budget is reported at $200M not $225M. So not sure where you got that number from but even your beloved Numbers site has it at $200M.

Which makes your “loss” calculation off, even if I don’t agree with how you’re doing it.

Oh, gosh, you're right! It was Superman that had the $225 Million budget, and The Fantastic Four was $200 Million.

I do hope my Late Nite Patio Post error, mixing up the two superhero movies, didn't cause too much consternation for us all. ;)

Also if you believe the Numbers site inflation adjustments, Shang-Chi would have been $480M if adjusted for inflation -

Final weekend box office is in for The Fantastic Four and Freakier Friday (Ffff) for both domestic and overseas. The Fantastic Four is fading very fast, and just crested $230 Million domestically and another $204 Million from foreign lands. Freakier Friday did $28 Million domestic and just $15 Million overseas, where it has already opened in every major country except Japan and South Korea.

So here's a Dog Days O' Summer update on where Burbank's box office stands so far this year. They've still got a lot of work to do to make up for two major bombs (Snow White and Elio) and three floppy disappointments (Captain America, The Amateur, Thunderbolts). Thank God for Lilo & Stitch being a huge hit on a budget from Ridgeback Ranch, or else 2025 would be brutal so far!

Mid Summer Madness.jpg

Captain America 4: $180 Production, $90 Marketing, $121 Domestic, $85 Overseas = $64 Million Loss
The Amateur:
$60 Production, $30 Marketing, $25 Domestic, $23 Overseas = $42 Million Loss
Rachel Zegler's Snow White: $270 Production, $100 Marketing, $52 Domestic, $47 Overseas = $271 Million Loss, Oof!
Thunderbolts:
$180 Production, $90 Marketing, $114 Domestic, $77 Overseas = $79 Million Loss
Lilo & Stitch:
$100 Production, $50 Marketing, $252 Domestic, $243 Overseas = $245 Million Profit
Elio:
$150 Production, $75 Marketing, $44 Domestic, $30 Overseas = $148 Million Loss
The Fantastic Four:
$200 Production, $100 Marketing, $139 Domestic, $82 Domestic = $79 Million Loss & Narrowing
Freakier Friday:
$42 Production, $20 Marketing, $17 Domestic, $6 Overseas = $39 Million Loss & Narrowing

2025 Burbank Box Office So Far During The Dog Days O' Summer = $468 Million Loss

Has Mr. Gunn said what his number is for his $225 Million tentpole to break even, if it's not $650 Million?

If they spent $225 Million on production, and another $100 Million on global advertising, and so far his studio's 60% of their domestic box office take equals $199 Million, and his studio's 40% of the overseas box office take equals $99 Million, then that math states Superman is currently at a loss of $27 Million. And break even with that $325 Million spent on production and marketing would indeed seem to be about $650 Million with the current domestic/overseas ticket mix.

Where are the savings coming from to be at break even or better by now with this box office? Was there a big production budget tax credit we are unaware of? Was Superman filmed in the UK and subsidized by British taxpayers, by chance?

Thank you for acknowledging.

Not my beloved site, its yours. I just use it since everyone here just defaulted to it. I was fine using BoxofficeMojo as I had been for many many years.

I think Mr Gunn, who is the head of DC, would know better than you or anyone here what the breakeven point is for his own movie.

Maybe he isn't using your "imperial" method. Maybe he is using the more standard "metric" (as you call it) method of 2.5x Production Budget which would put it at a $562.5M breakeven point on a $225M budget.

And maybe this puts more credence into using the rule of thumb 2.5x method that the rest of the industry uses.

If I'm being honest its becoming less interesting as time goes on. I thought you checked out long ago from these monetary discussions.

I'm depressed that wasn't even mentioned as being taken out. AMC gives us *TWO* AMC commercials.

We're *in* an AMC theater right now. Why are you advertising that I should go to an AMC theater!?!?
That would be like Disney advertising riding the Mr Toad while riding Mr Toad. Hey wait a minute, that is a good idea...🤔

Hey Bob, I have a new advertising campaign for you, give me a call.
