Beach erosion outside Lighthouse Cay cabanas

This was originally mentioned by @LAKid53 in another thread, but I thought it deserved its own thread. Thanks to @RememberWhen for providing a link that I could see.

One of the reddit comments says that the beach has eroded by 5 feet in the last month. :(

A month?! Wow, that's bad.

Don't know how DCL is going to remediate the beach erosion, other than adding sand and rocks....which the tide will continue to erode. They made commitments to the Bahamian government to preserve that portion of the Island as much as possible. Even though there are signs all over the southern part of the island advertising jobs for DCL & the construction of small homes for on island cruise workers.

It would be expensive to relocate half of the family beach cabanas further back from the water.

I hope until the issue is resolved, DCL is giving those who rented the affected cabanas a full credit as you cannot access the beach from them...not to mention the danger. I understand you can't access the family beach at all but from one or two spots.

While Lookout Cay is beautiful and nicer than Castaway Cay in many aspects, losing a significant portion of your beach isn't great. That breakwater on Castaway is a benefit.

We may stay on board next month.

The quality of this isn’t great, but I assume the cabanas they are videoing are the ones right near where the ship docks.

The adult beach cabanas (top right of map) look set farther back from the water.

this is only impacting the Mabrika cove cabanas. Lookout Cays main beach areas including the adult beach are fine

Well yeah, but still....cabanas are expensive!

I've been to Lookout Cay twice, and both times have been in a cabana (and OMG, Lookout Cay cabanas are SO MUCH NICER than Castaway Cay cabanas)

I can't imagine paying for one of these cabanas and being greeted with this sight.

Mabrika Cove IS the family beach area. There are 20 cabanas and the erosion is affecting nearly half of them. Imagine paying $963 for one, or $1,375 for one of the 4 grand cabanas, and you cannot access the beach from it.

That they are. And DCL FINALLY put soap and hand towels in the Grand cabanas. Kinda silly to provide a sink but no soap or towels.

Disney did a lot of environmental impact studies when planning lighthouse point (jeez-I guess maybe I’m hoping…?). Costal erosion should not be a surprise. Beaches are dynamic. They change over the years, they shift over time, they ebb and flow with the tides.

Certainly if I had booked one of those cabanas I would be asking for a refund. I don’t care how many drinks they’re willing to bring me, having to worry about my kids being bashed on the rocks would certainly put a damper on my day.

Agree. Frankly, if that's what tidal action has done in 30 days, I'm worried when we are on Lookout Cay in 30 days. There's not much beach at that spot left.

I'm kinda surprised DCL hasn't said something, because people who weren't able to book a cabana haunt the website to see if one becomes available at the 3 days before sail date.

Mabrika cove is where the family cabanas are. It it not the main family beach. Mabrika cove is the area near where the ship docks and that beach is intended only for Mabrika cove cabana guests. The main beach area and serenity bay are not impacted by this erosion.

Absolutely, cabanas are very expensive and guests paying for them have a right to be upset about their current state. My post was directed at the comment that someone might just stay onboard. Unless you have one of the family cabanas booked this will not impact your visit to Lookout Cay at all.

I've visited Lookout Cay twice. I'm leary taking my twin toddler grandkids.

I know. Not my first rodeo on Lookout Cay.

That’s good. I just wanted to make sure nobody that’s unfamiliar with Lookout Cay was confused. Your post seemed to indicate that Mabrika Cove was the main family beach.

The vast majority of guests to Lookout Cay do not have cabanas and won’t be impacted by this at all.

Wonder what caused this. There haven’t been any big tropical systems. Surely Invest 93 didn’t cause this? Can’t imagine what a hurricane would do.

Glad it hasn’t impacted the main beaches as we will be there in a couple weeks.
