Welcome to Visions Fantastic: An Imagineering Competition.

Beginning one month from today on June 25th, 2025 we will set off on an all new imagineering competition that seeks to reinvigorate our community while simultaneously bringing the style of games back to basics.

Visions Fantastic utilizes the name of the forum many of the members of our community started their armchair imagineering on, somewhere many hold fond attachments to with the beginning of classic competitions like So You Want to Be an Imagineer. This name embodies the goal of a more classic competition celebrating the simplicity and fun we’re going for.

The game will last about eight weeks and will be a combination of team and solo projects and will cover topics across Disney, Universal and beyond.

Signups begin today with the combination a month away leaving plenty of time for people to sign up as well as participate in the One Sentence Competition currently ongoing to test or hone your skills. This will be an elimination game but spots are fluid due to the (soon to be announced) elimination style.

We hope to see you all here. In an effort to build hype we will be introducing the Question of the Day throughout the month based around events, announcements, and scrapped challenge questions. So here’s today’s, feel free to answer as you sign up!

Question of the Day
With Memorial Day rolling around tomorrow, let’s think about some of the representations of the United States at the current parks. What is your favorite “American” thing at any theme park?

Maybe you’re an American Adventure at Epcot fan, maybe it’s the Grand Californian Hotel? Maybe Dollywood as a whole. Whatever it is, share it here with us!

Sign me up!

I just graduated college, and I'm trying to have a chill summer before grad school. Should be perfect for a friendly competition!

Happy Memorial Day to those who celebrate! While today is traditionally for remembering service members and whatnot, I think it’s the perfect day for this…

Question of the Day
What is your favorite memory you have from a theme park? Maybe a childhood memory or maybe a first time on an attraction?

For me, it’s got to be from my first time doing the Wild Africa Trek at Animal Kingdom. I had the amazing opportunity to do it entirely solo, just me and my dad and nobody else so we got to really experience a personalized tour of the savannah and I got some great one-on-one time with the guides to ask all my animal kingdom questions.
On my first trip to a Disney park, I was very little and scared of most of the rides. Thought the Tiki Room would be scary lol. But we rode Thunder Mountain as our first ride, and after that my Dad bargained with me to go on other rides in exchange for repeatedly re-riding Big Thunder. That was the only way to convince me to go on the Tiki Room, Pirates, Haunted Mansion. I think we rode Thunder Mountain like 5 times in one day, that was all we did the first day of the trip.

Question of the Day

What is a prompt you’d like to see in this game?

Also, don’t forget, sign ups are still going on and we have plenty of spots left, so if you haven’t signed up already, feel free to. Even low commitment players are welcome as the (soon to be announced) game style will be friendly to all types of players
Won't be specific, but anything smaller or weirder I think can help break up gameplay! Like giant lands are fun as openers but a lot of the time it becomes each person doing a mini-project on their own.

Question of the Day...

What is your favorite project you've worked on during any imagineering competition?
Hard one, but the music park from last year's Citrus Dreamin' is still fresh in my mind and was such an inspired concept!

What is your favorite project you've worked on during any imagineering competition?
Recently Luminous or the Story Source. Both feel the most complete, or the closest to how I would ideally present a project.

Not signing up, but I’ll be around, lurking and occasionally judging.

Question of the Day

In honor of another brainstormed yet cut project from this game’s lineup which would’ve seen players design a fourth attraction for the upcoming Tropical Americas at Animal Kingdom:

What is the best attraction replacement in theme park history? What new attraction that replaced something old do you consider the ultimate upgrade? Could be a show, a ride, a meet and greet, whatever, it just has to have replaced something that existed already.

For me, I’ve got to go with Wishes —> Happily Ever After. Wishes was a huge part of my childhood nostalgia but it closed down May 11th, 2017 which was my 18th birthday and was replaced with what I find to be just the perfect Disney fireworks show. Between it going away the day I “became an adult” and the replacement just being so good, I’ll always have a fondness for this change

I’ll go with Rio del Tiempo -> Gran Fiesta Tour. The latter is genuinely one of my favorite rides (granted, a lot of the stuff that makes it great is carried over from the former), it still showcases Mexico, and I’ve got a soft spot for the Three Caballeros. I don’t think that’s a super controversial take, but I could be wrong!

What is a prompt you’d like to see in this game?
Fully build out Disneyland Abu Dhabi (divide into teams of 2-4 to work on each land)!!!
Question of the Day...

What is your favorite project you've worked on during any imagineering competition?
Fantasia 2024, it was one of my favorite experiences with presentation, creating a gorgeous website and even composing music!
What is the best attraction replacement in theme park history?
Splash Mountain to Tiana’s Bayou Adventure… just kidding 😁 Superstar limo -> Monsters Inc zero contest

also, i forgot to mention but i’m 100% ready to join the game!

This is tough because there's a lot of ones like Tiana’s and Runaway Railway that I consider lateral moves. Better in some ways and worse in others. Or rides like Cosmic Rewind that are so different it feels impossible to compare to compare to what came before with how different it is.

Maybe Country Bear Musical Jamboree (which I'm sure is a controversial answer). I do miss the edginess and classic feeling of the old show. But the new one has such a fun chaotic energy that it almost feels more like a Muppets show. And the Disney songs feel shockingly natural

I totally didn't think I would agree because I'm such a huge fan of the original Country Bear Jamboree, but upon watching it a few weeks ago when I was down there, yeah, I kind of enjoyed it a lot.

I’ll let you know after I finally get to ride Cosmic Rewind. Honestly I loved the original version of Universe of Energy, and anything “classic” EPCOT,… but it did feel like that attraction was in need of a big change.

Let’s not forget Journey into Your Imagination that was so bad they made a new version with Figment like a year later (but at the same time the og is better)

Question of the Day
With Memorial Day rolling around tomorrow, let’s think about some of the representations of the United States at the current parks. What is your favorite “American” thing at any theme park?

Main Street USA. There is nothing like the feeling of walking through there at night, with the scent of confectionery delights filling the air and Cinderella’s Castle looming ahead. That is a little slice of heaven.

Question of the Day
What is your favorite memory you have from a theme park? Maybe a childhood memory or maybe a first time on an attraction?

I have so many.

Staying up late watching the WDW Resort Channel on a loop, meeting April O’Neal and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a little kid, meeting Ariel as a teenager, meeting Ariel as a young adult, meeting Ariel as a 30-something, riding Horizons and feeling so enamored with the possibilities of the future (nobody tell baby Tegan how it worked out, just let her enjoy it), going on attractions with first time visitors and getting to see their reactions, going on Carousel of Progress with my dad’s whole family and all of us singing “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” with such enthusiasm that we get the whole theater to join in.

But my absolute favorite is deeply personal; Getting to experience, well, the EPCOT Experience preview center in the Odyssey with my grandpa. Some of you may recall, but he was the entire reason that we are a Disney family and his enthusiasm never waned. WDW became holy ground for us.

On this particular morning, we got to EPCOT early, I grabbed a Joffrey’s, and we were on our way. The EPCOT Experience had just opened like a week before our trip.

When we stepped foot into the large circular theater that highlighted all the coming attractions, I immediately became six years old again. But then I looked over at my Grandpa, and he had a look of absolute wonder on his face. And I just stood there taking that moment in for a while. This intelligent, successful, retired executive had never lost touch with his inner child, and still allowed himself to be overwhelmed with joy and excitement.

The pandemic took over our lives about six months later. In spring of 2022, I went back for the first time since that trip, not knowing it would be my last time at WDW with my grandpa. He passed away two years ago. And I haven’t been back to our favorite place yet. But I carry that moment with me daily.

Question of the Day

In honor of another cut prompt where players would have had to design a fourth All-Star Resort to go alongside Music, Movies, and Sports:

What is your favorite themed hotel at a theme park? Likely Disney or Universal but maybe you’re a big fan of the old Nickelodeon Hotel or maybe there’s others out there I’m not even aware of.

For me, I don’t think I even have to say it because it’s so obvious, but yeah, it’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, particularly Jambo House though Kidani Village is nice too. I have a few friends and their partners who have never been to Disney World and so my partner and I are planning to take them next spring and I’m bumming DVC points from my parents so we can stay at AKL because if I’m taking two zookeepers to Disney, we’ve gotta stay at AKL
