UAE now top contender for Epcot World Showcase expansion?

A brand new UAE expo style showcase indoor location; make the outside like you are entering one of their contemporary museums. Boom - easy!

A Brazil expansion is also so necessary too -- adding two new areas to the WS would be such a legacy boost for Iger too...

Bob Iger tried to sell off Disneyland, Walt Disney World and Disney’s stakes in Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland. The Saudis were interested and he took the call.
That would have propbably been the end of the Walt Disney Company as we know it... Then it would be just an entertainment company with TV, Films and streaming, and leased creatives for a separately owned parks division....

What do people here imagine a UAE pavilion would look like? What historical landmarks do they think it would reference or recreate?

Qasar al watan or the Emirates palace oriental hotel.

I find it literally incredible that Disney was contemplating partnering with the Saudis. Stranger things have happened, of course, but without solid proof, I really can’t believe this was ever a real possibility. Unless I’m mistaken, you’re the only poster who’s referred to it.

Contemplated skeptically would be the read, but he did listen to it and visit.

Plus the long held 10% stake of Euro Disneyland.

Why would anyone want this? This is a terrible idea.

Huge centralized growing tourism market with major airport access servicing 500k income eligible customers who otherwise do not have very close access to an existing park. With a valid backstopped partner, with a very successful track record for recent tourism projects, who wants to fork over the entire bill but still cede design control to Disney.

The region itself makes sense, the specific country chosen poses major ethical concerns, less than some where they have resorts already, more than others. Those factors eventually lost to the overwhelming business case.

I’d take any NEW pavilion. A replacement would stink even if Morocco is a waste right now. It doesn’t need to be a waste.
I agree....Morocco is a waste because they have made it that way.... Bring back the Souk...bring back the restaurant and entertainment.... and add a freaking attraction to the pavilion which will insure the pavilion's popularity moving forward....No Disney IP connected to Morocco? Write a new movie...it would have to be better than that stinker. WISH...
Maybe turn the existing Restaurant into a reborn Adventurer's Club with a 21+ speakeasy attached. and some sort of attraction...

Morocco was great pre pandemic. When it was closed due to the pandemic, the tenant could not pat the rent and instead of Disney trying to work with the tenant, they foreclosed. Too Bad.

As for a new pavilion I think Disney would welcome ANY country with the CASH to pay to build it and PAY RENT.

I have to agree, Iger is an idiot.
I love it when someone says that a guy that has convinced a large number of powerful people to pay him millions of dollars per year to run their company is also an idiot. All the while so many of the smart people in the world are scratching to buy bread for their table. Something just doesn't add up. I'd let someone call me an idiot for just half of what he pulls down. Where do I sign up?

Wait, we have far to many of them hanging around now. I may die broke but no one will ever say I was overpaid. So I've got that going for me!

Morocco may not be as flourished as it once was, but the way it is now doesn't really make it different from say Italy or Germany. Italy has two restaurants, two stores but really that's it and a street performer. I love Morocco and it's not a waste to me.

Not necessarily, they have turned down in the past.

This! There is some poor management going on there with this park and how they are treating things, I don't get them. Why Disney is not operating the closed Marrakesh themselves, even if that means turning it into a character hero dining experience or Aladdin and friends dinner or something like that, is a missed opportunity that they could be profiting from. They just don't want to spend an operating dime. This is a place that use to flourish, properties and parks, but now its all being ran like its going out of business. Just look at the emporium as another example.

It's far from the only EPCOT pavilion that's either entirely abandoned, or has unused/underutilized space.

The addition of other restaurants, including a 2nd table service for Morocco, has made it easy to let Marrakesh sit idle.
