The Walt Disney Museum has been in the planning stage since the announcement in 2004 by the The Walt Disney Family Foundation to build the museum in San Francisco at the Presidio. As seen on the website for the Presidio, they report that "The Walt Disney Family Foundation is a non-profit organization that has been a tenant at the Presidio since 2001. The Foundation proposes to rehabilitate the building for use as a museum and research center, providing a permanent source of information on Disney, his accomplishments, and the period of American history that he greatly influenced. The museum would include a permanent exhibit on the life of Walt Disney, a traveling exhibit space, a learning center, and an archive, as well as foundation and museum offices."
There's a little bit of confusion as The Presidio has the site listed as the barracks on Montgomery Street. However, in a recent edition of the San Francisco Examiner, they list the site for the proposed
museum as 122 Riley Street. I took a drive this past weekend to take pics of the two proposed sites. Click on the links to see the pics. Of the two sites, I think Site A is the more probable of the sites to house the museum, when and if it ever gets off the ground.
SITE A
Site A is a row of brick buildings that used to be barracks when the Presedio was a working Army base. These are the buildings mentioned on the Presidio's website.
Here is a shot of one of the barracks building that may house the Walt Disney Museum.
A close up shot of the buildings.
Here's a shot of the wooden covered porch that runs along the front of the barracks.
And here's a look of the barracks with a shot of the parking lot...and my car.
And look!! The parking lot also has a version of the Tree of Life!! Okay, not really. Another shot of the large parking lot that runs the length of the barracks.
SITE B
I had always assumed the the "barracks" were to be the site for the Walt museum. But I was very surprised when the SF Examiner reported the site as 122 Riley, which is actually behind the barracks, on a quiet street lined with officer's residences.
The building is a two story brick building. From what I could see the brick building is still in good condition although it definitely needs to be upgraded and refurbished.
One thing that this site has going for it is that it sits right next to the approach to the Golden Gate Bridge, which means it has a beautiful view of the GG Bridge. Unfortunately, it was raining when I took these pics, but you can just make out the GG Bridge in the distance and a shot of the San Francisco Bay.
Here's a shot of the rear of Site B which also has a parking lot, though not as extensive as the barracks parking lot. As I said earlier, Site B is just in the rear of Site A as you can see in this pic.
