Welcome to the Abominable Appetites Food Cart!

Located in the Asia area of Disney's Animal Kingdom, this food cart will serve the "coolest" snacks of all time! In the hot summer day, or even in the winter, enjoy amazing food after your journey to find the yeti on Expedition Everest.

Food Cart.jpg

Backstory:

Many years ago, before people first dared to venture up to the summit of Mount Everest, there was a small village at the base of the gargantuan mountain. One day, a strange man showed up, claiming that he was going to climb the mountain that had loomed over the villagers for so many years. This man's name was Edmund Hillary, a climber from New Zealand. So, of he went. He was gone for many days and nights. The villagers feared that he had been eaten by the Yeti. A creature they had warned Edmund about before his massive climb. He, of course, had disregarded everything they said. I mean, who would you believe? A group of Nepalese villagers you had never met, or the laws of physics and science? So when Edmund returned from the historic hike, he was frightened and terrified. He said that he saw a large, white furred creature with teeth the size of a human's foot. In order to soothe his feelings, the villagers built Edmund a cart that served him Hot Chocolate in the winter and Lemonade and Snow Cones in the summer. The owners of the cart did not plan for their business to sky rocket. They planned to close their small cart when Edmund Hillary got back to his normal self. But, the other villagers loved the cart and started to buy from it on an everyday basis. When the owners grew old and weak, they passed the cart onto their oldest child. This child decided to name the food cart. He named it The Abominable Appetites Food Cart! So when this man grew old and weak, he passed it onto his oldest child and she passed it to her oldest child. This tradition still continues today. The Abominable Appetites Food Cart still exists and is serving customers today. (With the help of many renovations and menu updates of course).

Summer Menu (Served March, April, May, June, July, August and September):
  • Snow Cones
  • Lemonade
  • Ice Cream Treats (Mickey Premium Bars, Ice Cream Sandwiches, Popsicles, etc...)
  • Coca-Cola Products
  • Pop-Corn
  • Abominable Apple Freeze (The same as the drink at Gastons Tavern).
  • Soft Pretzels

Winter Menu (Served October, November, December, January and February):

  • Hot Chocolate
  • Warm Apple Cider
  • Pop-Corn
  • Soft Pretzels
  • Coca-Cola Products
  • Turkey Legs (During November)
  • Abominable Apple Freeze (For those who dare the freeze :D)

The cart looks and feels almost hastily made. The reason for this is because the villagers in the past had to put together the cart very quickly in order to help Edmund Hillary recover. It looks as if the the villagers made the cart out a scrap wood and the wood coloration is very different. Also, there are many strange parts that are attached, making the cart look very interesting. Although this appearance may sound odd or even weird, it still fits with the Nepalese village them and the surrounding area of Asia.

I decided to make this food cart because this area of the park really lacks a place where you can get something quick to eat. Sure, there is the Yak & Yeti, but that is more of a counter-service location then a quick snack place. (Also, for those people who are very prone to motion sickness, the salt on the soft pretzels will help them feel much better :D).

By the way guys, when you post an idea please have it done. Not trying to get rude but I'd rather be able to read the whole proposal at once. Thanks!

Sorry about that. I'll try to follow that rule from now on. ;) Do you want me to delete the post for right now? Also, I would have finished it, but I was watching the Boston Marathon for most of the day.

You're fine. Just for future reference!

Hey is it too late to join in on the fun? I'll try and have a food cart idea posted sometime tonight/tomorrow-ish.
You can join. You'll find out your pairing next weekend. The cart bonus challenge is due Thursday!

Hello all, I am glad to say I am back. I know I left the Wedcar race, but have been so busy that I wasn't on here for a couple months. I will try to be on here more consistently, and you can pair me with anyone @LittleGiants16 , I just want to get back into the swing of the imagineer thing.

Spring Training - Warm Up Challenge - englanddg's submission

"Your warm-up challenge is to design a food cart. Yes, a simple, ordinary food cart. But we are imagineers! We can't simply plop a man into an area and tell him to sell food, we must build him an abode and appropriately theme it. For this competition I want:
  • A location
  • A backstory/theme (work them together, make it cohesive)
  • What will be served
  • And why you chose what you chose
Drawings/pictures are up to you. No more than two though, I really like writing. Oh, and one more thing, keep things realistic. I really like ideas that could be constructed in the real world. This goes for future competitions as well, if I can't see it happening you're going to get marked down. Aside from that word of advice knock yourselves out! Any questions just ask!"

The Story

After the success of the European Tour, the Muppets are back in business! The Swedish Chef has decided to go into business to capitalize upon the crowds leaving the reunion show playing at Muppet Theater at Hollywood Studios. Funded by Gonzo's wealth, he's launched a venue to showcase Muppet cuisine! What could possibly go wrong?

The Cart

The "cart" is a hollowed out airstream mini-trailer. Decor would have it naturally aged and distressed, with zany additions that only a Muppet could think up! For example, over-sized spigots that serve no purpose, jumbled decor, "interesting" patchwork, etc.

It would be located across from the exit of the Muppet 4D Theatre.

One end of the cart would have a small wares shop under a tarp that will carry specialty food items (such as the Chefs signature sauces, spicy relish, sauerkraut, coffee beans, kettle chips and condiments), t-shirts based on the venue, parody shirts like one that has a picture of the Swedish Chef inside a Starbucks logo and it says "Starborks Kerfee", hats, etc. This is also where diners will check out and pay for their meals.

sticker,375x360.png

The middle of the cart will consist of two windows. One for ordering, one for picking up the order. In front of this will be the primary queue area.

The other end of the cart would be a window that has a show and outdoor seating. When the show isn't playing, the window will be opaque. At showtime, the window reveals a projection screen for characters in a real interactive diorama style environment (similar to the technology used in Rockin' Roller Coaster), where they will put on a small kitchen hijinks show!

Every 15 minutes or so the Swedish Chef (and guests stars) will perform! The audience can watch the Chef create his signature dishes sold on site, with appropriate zany situations and mishaps!

There will be a total of 8 shows, cycling within two hour windows. The shows will be written and combined with smoke machines and animations within the diorama to give the characters the appearance of interacting with their surrounding environment. Kids can plop down on the pavement or the umbrella chairs to watch the show while their parents eat.

Cast members will be trained to pronounce the items as the Chef would, and will perform a "call out" after the order is made to the grill person in the Chef's style.

Imagine how amusing it would be to order in plain English, and then hear this?

"One-a oorder ooff svedeesh meetbell soob veet ixtra grefy und a seede-a ooff french freees und a cuke-a."

Which, translates to "One swedish meatball sub with extra gravy and a side order of french fries with a coke". The translation would be run through a premade translation matrix in the POS system that translates the order into "chef" and prints it on the ticket for the person to call out. The actual orders will be in plain english, this is just for show.

Similarly, when you pick up your order, the terminology is used.

The Menu

Meals to Go
All meals are served with a complimentary choice of Swedish Chef brand kettle chips, such as Ooneeun und de Suoor Creem (Sour Cream and Onion), Berbeeqooe (BBQ), Feeneger unt de Selt (Salt and Vinegar), Bureeng Cheeps (literally, boring chips, plain). Or one can get an order French Freed Putatus (French Fries) for a nominal upcharge.

Zee Svedeesh Meetball Soob (The Swedish Meatball Sub)
The Chef's specialty. This sub is overflowing with bite sized Swedish meatballs made with ground beef and pork (beef only versions available for those who have dietary requirements) and seasoned with allspice and finely chopped sweet onions. Served on a sturdy sourdough hoagie roll that has been lightly toasted and topped with the chefs signature "Beeffy Creemy" sauce and garnished with freshly chopped chives.

Coocoomber Havlsi Sundveech (Cucumber Half Sandwich, also available as a wrap)
This refreshing sandwich is perfect for a hot day! First, a healthy slice of 5 grain sourdough bread is coated with olive oil and then broiled to perfection. This is topped with perfectly sliced English cucumbers and placed on a bed of spicy seasoned cream cheese, and topped with dill.

Gyru Guudeees (Gyro Wraps, Chef Style!)
Freshly sliced gyro meat made of lamb and beef seasoned with garlic, cumin, marjoram, rosemary, thyme and oregano and baked on a rotisserie all day are served on whole wheat pita bread with fresh lettuce, chopped grape tomatoes and freshly made tzatziki sauce! Sweet onions and/or sliced avocado optional.

Zee Duggeee-a Duggeee-a Boon (Doggy in a bun)
Bratwursts are boiled in beer then grilled to order over ceder woodfire and served on a toasted sourdough hoagie roll with sauerkraut and the Chefs signature pink peppercorn deli mustard! Spicy relish and other condiments / toppings available upon request.

Feeshy on Breed (Tuna Fish Salad, also available as a wrap)
Fresh Tuna Salad made with broiled Ahi Tuna (not canned tuna), house made mayo, and a spicy pickle relish. Served on broiled 5 grain sourdough bread and topped with sliced sweet onions.

Oeenky Becon (Avocado Southwestern BLT)
Served on toasted 5 grain sourdough, thick sliced applewood smoked bacon is "woven" together and fried on the griddle until well cooked. Topped with a salad made from shredded iceberg lettuce, chopped grape tomatoes, and avocado slices all drizzled with olive oil and red wine vinegar. This is then topped with avocado slices and the Chefs specialty Cheeputle-a Meyuneeese (Chipotle Mayonnaise).

Desserts / Snacks

Shefed Ice (Snow Cones)
Freshly shaved ice is drizzled with the syrup of your choice (blackberry, raspberry, cherry, blueberry, strawberry).

Bununa Spleet (Banana Split)
Served in a custom cinnamon pastry crust, half a banana is sauteed and seasoned with brown sugar. Served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and drizzled with Ghiradelli Caramel and Dark Chocolate sauces, and freshly made whipped cream. Topped with a cherry, of course.

French Freeed Putetus (French Fries)
Idaho potatoes cut into shoestrings and fried twice, skin on. Seasoned with the Chefs special "Bahm" seasoning (cayenne pepper, garlic salt, black pepper) and splashed with malt vinegar and served in newsprint.

Epple-a Theengs (Apple Things)
Granny Smith apples sliced and lightly baked in butter and brown sugar. Sprinkled with fresh cinnamon for a bite sized delight!

Drinks

Orungy Cuke (Orange Coke)
Orange Fanta and Coke mixed with a splash of fresh lemon.

Orungy Sveet Tea, Lemuny Sveet Tea
Freshly brewed iced tea, available in sweet, unsweet or sweetened with Stevia and splashed with fresh lemon juice or fresh orange juice for a citrus twist.

Ruut Beer Fluet (Root Beer Float)
Vanilla ice cream added to Dr. Pepper or Barqs, topped with freshly made whipped cream and a cherry. Served in an optional collectible glass mug fresh from the freezer for a nominal upcharge.

Dr. Pepper and the normal range of Coke Products

Hot Coffee (Starborks brand), Hot Tea, Hot Chocolate

Why?

I chose this theme because I feel that it would accomplish the following:

1) Add more interactivity to the Muppet's section of HS with the show
2) Capitalize on the popularity of the character, and hopefully entertain
3) Offer foods with a twist that are unique to that venue
4) Create further merchandising opportunities (not part of the challenge, but it never hurts!)
5) Because, it's the Swedish Chef!

I didn't go with a simple food cart, only because I wanted the venue to stand out. The concept is that all the foods are unique to this venue, offer things that can't be found elsewhere on the parks (such as Dr. Pepper!), and ties in a rounded concept with multiple revenue streams. It's still not a full sized food truck, but it's a bit more than a simple cart, which improves the menu and the offerings (like the show / seating area!). This is more in keeping with other "carts" that Disney has done, like Galloping Gerties, which is themed and has an environment and a seating area, even though not being much more than an ice cream venue.

While the venue will offer Starborks coffee, it will not offer premium coffees as to not compete with Starbucks itself. It's a lunch / snack / street food venue, not a coffee stand (though, that would have been a neat concept as well!)

Staffing would consist of 3 - 4 CMs during peak, 2 otherwise.

By the way guys, when you post an idea please have it done. Not trying to get rude but I'd rather be able to read the whole proposal at once. Thanks!
The only thing I'll ask, regarding this, is that you put a "review time" up...

If there is a deadline, then posts should be able to be edited, I think.

What I mean is that, many times, one will post the first draft, then need to edit language or formatting (not core concept...once you post the core concept, you are stuck with it, that's only fair!)

Perhaps if you said..."Any submissions posted here are considered final as of <pick a time> the following day of of post" or you just chose not to review any of them until the due date, that would work better?

I bring this up because it's going to be a sticking point (and has been) in other competitions. Since the editor on wdwmagic doesn't copy and past from something like, say...MS Word...perfectly, a certain amount of massage is required. So much so that I don't even bother creating the content outside of the wdwmagic editor anymore. I do it in the draft box and let it save the draft, then post and edit.

I understand someone editing well after submission (for example, if I came in a few days and edited my post, that wouldn't be cool)...but, there should be a window, maybe of a few hours or 1 day after posting, to edit the original post without issues.

Of course, the "due date/time" is just that, and anything after that is up to the comp host to approve (I don't think a team submission in a team comp that is late within a reasonable time should be disregarded, and we ran into that last SA challenge...more than once)...but, I don't think that people who post early should be penalized if they wish to craft their position a bit more as long as it's before the due date and obviously within a fair window of time.

What would NOT be fair is for others to post, and for me, for example, to go back and further refine my post to attempt to give me an edge. However, working on my post when no one is looking (like now) within a reasonable time, I don't see the issue with that.

Thoughts?

I actually had a whole backstory planned and written out. But then, I accidentally deleted it all so I was forced to rewrite it. Luckily, it gave me the opportunity to think of something different, causing me to write what I actually posted. :D

I agree with you. I just type my post in the WDWMagic editor and post it when it has come close to done. Also, for those like me who have Microsoft Word trouble and it doesn't work for you, as well as not having any other writing tool, the only place for me to write it is here. (I'm to lazy to fix my Microsoft word :p).

That's not a bad thought. To give everyone a due date and time, everything will be due at 11:59 pm on Thursdays of a given week. As to your comment about things being late, I'm a big fan of punctuality. Am I planning on screwing people if they are a little late, no, but I will keep in mind those that are on time and those who aren't. Just a word to the wise on that front.
