A man preparing to go to the movies with his son at the Downtown Disney shopping complex shot himself in the leg Saturday night, authorities said. The man, who was not named, was treated at Orlando Regional Medical Center for a non-life-threatening accidental gunshot injury, Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Solomons said.

The Sheriff's Office earlier reported that the man was leaving the Disney area when the gun was discharged.

The man's 12-year-old son phoned authorities shortly after 7:30 p.m. to report the shooting.

Solomons said the man had his son get out of their car and wait so he "could safely clear his weapon," Solomons said. He removed the semiautomatic handgun from his waistband and while he was removing the magazine or clearing the round from the chamber, "the firearm discharged, striking him in the leg.

Solomons said it did not appear the gun was ever brought into the Disney shopping mall at Downtown Disney.

The man was in stable condition at ORMC later Saturday.

Reason number 1 why I agree with WDW wanting to restrict guns on their property...

Thankfully it went down and hit him in the leg instead of someone else nearby...

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I can see why he brought the gun in his car, with the gang activity and all, (possibly an undercover officer?) and it was good to hear that he was concerned for his son's safety.

Any word on if they were locals or visiting?

No doubt the "brains" at the NRA will try to spin this as a man protesting Disney's banning of guns on their property. Soon, there will be a rash of Jethros blasting various body parts in protest...

And yet another reason guns shouldn't be on Disney property... What if the gun discharged and the bullet hit a little kid??? Own as many guns as yoru heart desires... Just keep them HOME!!!!!!

One unfortunate accident doesn't balance out all the other concealed guns that ARE carried around safely that you don't even know about. The vast majority of gun owners are trained in the safe concealment and use of their firearms. The vast majority of gun owners never have an accident such as this.

Please explain how the law that was just passed, prevented this person from bringing his gun to WDW? Please explain how WDW's policy on not allowing firearms, prevented this person from bringing the gun to Downtown Disney.

Once again, policy, law or not. There is no way to prevent this from happening.

Well there is one way.. close Downtown Disney. Shopping is evil and attracts crime, guns and debt!
