AVATAR land coming to Disney's Animal Kingdom

That just shows even with the argument of inflation and what not, that Avatar is still in a group of some dearly beloved classics

...Not to mention the change in trends of moviegoing vs home video, or the highly truncated time that a film spends in a theater these days. Inflation is only part of the story.

Also, remember just how long Avatar was. You can fit multiple showings of something like 101 Dalmatians or Snow White and the 7 Dwarves into one screening of Avatar.

it also doesn't take into account that there arenow more screens than ever before or that there are huge markets that did not exist even a decade ago.

face it total gross is a poor goal post

It is. Theres also a few there that most people born in the last 3 decades havent seen. It could go either way...

Yeah probably due to the fact they are outdated by now, and wouldn't be worth watching today baring some Blue Ray HD remastered re-release.

Can't really compare with a modern film like Avatar.

Also the fact that many people simply torrent movies online from some illegal sites. Hell most of my friends don't even go to the theaters anymore because of torrent sites that rip the movie from the theaters...

There's alot of subtle aspects to consider in the general revenue of Avatar.

To clarify that it is all time DOMESTIC adjusted box office numbers.

....but its not always going to be modern. The reason that all those other films are classics are because of the story. Not because they were in 3d and they looked super pretty. Only time will tell if Avatar is a classic.

Don't worry I knew it sounded off when I wrote it but doesn't it seem like the quietest billion dollars a movie ever made?

I just don't see the enthusiasm about the movie, no one talks about it, etc ...

But maybe the sequels will change all that.

I agree, and found AVATAR underwhelming after seeing it.
Frankly, I was dumbfounded by the box office success.

But then again, the movie going public has never been the brightest in my mind.
'Transformers' anyone??? Talk about bad!!!!!!!
Those horrible movies make 'Avatar' look like 'Lawrence of Arabia'.
And yet they also make huge $$$.

The difference between Avatar and Transformers is Transformers relies on mindless action in a normal earth environment.
While Avatar takes place in an amazingly wondrous World which can be used by Disney Imaginears to create awesome attractions.

My beef isn't with the haters who don't like the movie.
It's with those who think this theme park idea will bomb.
In my opinion, it's almost guaranteed to be a huge success!
As others have said, this is a huge 'get' by Disney.:sohappy:

Well you have to remember back then that going to the theaters was a big major weekend thing. Today, you have so much other things you could be doing..back then you were fairly limited to an extent.

Oh please. Snow White? 101 Dalmation? Star Wars? I'd hardly call them story tellling powerhouses.

With Star Wars most people fell in love with the atmosphere of Star Wars, and the whole world it presented.

Same with Pandora...

Couple things to keep in mind:

1.Avatar came out 12 years after Titanic.
2.Avatar came out in 3D and Imax (Titanic had neither).

If you look at the dates, there's no contest, Titanic sold MANY more tickets, as did several other films. Not trying to take anything away from Avatar. Just saying, don't be completely blinded by the numbers. As someone else pointed out, adjusted for inflation Avatar is #14 (still impressive), but again, that's with 3D and IMax.

I think

people are forgetting that u dont have to like the movie to love the ride. How many people love the Spiderman ride who never picked up a comic or hate super hero movies? I would say a lot. As long as it is a great ride-I could care less that it is based on a movie I didnt love.
