You have to love the People Characters at WDW (especially Scoop)

I need to give a little back story first. My daughter was turned on to pin trading from Scoop Sanderson. She met him when she was 4 and she had only 1 pin at the time. She waited patiently. Scoop told her he only trades pins with people he knows. She introduced herself all-be-it a little nervous. She and Scoop talked a little bit. After she was comfortable, she used her manners, and she was overwhelmed on trading her only pin. He told her she didn't have to trade if she didn't want to. Through interacting, he helped her find a pin she wanted. She was excited, thanked him, and gave him a giant hug. At that point Scoop proceeded to make a Main Street announcement letting everyone know how polite she was trading her pin with him. He proceeded to give her a special Stictch Pin Trader pin so she would have 2 pins now.

Fast-forward to now and we make every attempt to see Scoop each trip. We did see him on our last trip and it made my daughter's trip because we missed him the trip before. My wife met him for the first time. She wrote him a letter one of her teacher friends offered to deliver. The poor guy did not know Scoop, where to find him, or anything. Well, he was on Main Street last week during Spring Break looking lost. Scoop actually came up to him asking if he needed help. After he found out he was Scoop, he told him he had a letter for him from a friend. He gave my wife's thank you letter to him. Scoop (whether he really remembers or not) gave him a special pin to give to my wife. It wasn't expected or asked for. My wife is forever grateful.

These are the things and reasons we go back to WDW so often. We have more fun in our interactions with CMs than the rides. We stayed at POR. Every morning when he was there, my daughter would greet, hug, and chat with Birdie (sp?). If you do not know him, he is an elderly greeter at POR. The day we were leaving, my daughter went to talk to him. She said she was sad that she was leaving and would miss seeing him. She asked him to sign her autograph book. I can't tell you how special it made that amazing man feel. I could tell in his expression he was holding back tears. I don't think anyone had ever asked him to sign their autograph book. We are definitely making it a point to get to POR this trip to see if he is still there. I will call the resort to see if he is still there.

Great story! And you are right. People ask us why we go back all that times and along with the rides, music, Disney stuff, the people are always number one. My family's 'People Character' is Mapui from the Polynesian. It is the coolest sweetest guy and he truly makes the trip (and the price of the hotel) worth every penny.

My cousin didn't like the room we were placed in (she's spoiled) so we went back down to see if we could get a change; leaving our luggage in the soon to be locked room. Mapui, who is one of the bell hops there, came to escort us back to the room to pick up our things. However, we couldn't remember which building or number! By our description, he figured out the building but for the room, he had to just start opening all the doors. It was like something out of a sit com. Some people were cool, there was one guy who was a little annoyed (sorry if you are reading this) and eventually we found our room. Mapui was so patient and understanding with us. I know I was embarrassed. Anyway, we got our luggage in to the new room and all was good. On top of that, he went with us to greet my Aunt, who was coming in separately and he took all her luggage for her. And the whole trip, every time he saw us walking would give us a ride in his cart to wherever we were going.

Since then, we make it a point to see him every trip and if we can, make sure he is the one who gets our luggage. A few years ago when we went for a short 3 day trip for Halloween, we made a special trip to the Poly to see him (we stayed at the Pop then). Unfortunately, he wasn't there, but we all wrote him a note. We have introduced him to other friends through the years too and he is always doing something with us, whether it be jokes, or teaching us hula dance.

I can't wait to see him again. We'll be there in 3 more days. It's so funny but I am not the biggest fan of all the Poly updates but as long as people like Mapui are there, the changes don't hurt as much because it's not about fountains and bars; it's about the people.

He's not really a character, but Richard (link for those who do not know) at the Grand Floridian is a family legend. We call him Mr. Floridian and gave him an elaborate backstory where he is the owner of the resort. Every time we go, he seems to be there, smiling. Unfortunately, he had a day off on our wedding and did not hold my wife's train. We did see him the next day, however, and we told him he was our hero. People like this really make Disney a special place.

Mouseketeer growing up (still in love with Anette), WDW first time in 1974, grudgingly (let's not go there) DVC starting in '02, (best decision we've ever made), Art greeting you (growing family) as you stepped thru the doors of Beach Club...everything suddenly lifted from your shoulders...a salute...a hug...everything is right with the world..."the people characters"....priceless!
