What ever happened to Pal Mickey

Who remembers the option to rent Pal Mickey?!?! I remember thinking that was a gross idea. Rent some other kid's drool & sticky fingers??? No thanks! My guess was Disney banked on people opting to just buy it for $60 vs. sinking $20 (?) into renting & having nothing to show for the money at the end of the day. ;)

I would say it was the oncoming of smart phone technology that put an end to Pal Mickey.
I mean, why buy a Pal Mickey when you can get most of the info he was spouting for less money ( or for free ) off of a modern smart phone app ?

I was just thinking about this the other day....when Pal Mickey was mentioned in a thread i was reading. It was a blast from the past, and i remembered how it had been ages since i actually saw someone using one in the Parks.

Interesting to hear they are hot collectibles now...or at least it seems so in the resale world.

I wonder if those old light up interactive Magic Pins from 2000 are also still working in the Parks, and if they are also now sought after collectibles?

We have two of them in our family. I seem to remember when they discontinued them they gave some sort of time line on how long they would still work. If they do I think it would be fun to here the obsolete things he might say now.

In the Parks
No
I still have mine. He's sitting in my closet. Needs new batteries, but still works.

I got my first one in 2003 when they came out. I had to replace it several times before I got my current working one. They had a variety of problems and malfunctions. I had him in the park after they were discontinued, and he still worked. My Disney Experience far outdates him now, though I'm thinking of putting new batteries in him. Yes, I do remember the rental option, though I was only 8 years old at the time. They discontinued that, according to Wikipedia, in 2004.

Although I would never consider selling Pal Mickey (or any of my other Disney stuff for that matter) he is up to over $100 on ebay now. That's more that what we paid for him. I also discovered that a Cinderella pin from when I was 4 is up to $35 now...am saving.

This is kinda weird because I was recently wondering what happened to Pal Mickey! I remember being in the photo shop by Spaceship Earth and watching the little TV screen advertising Pal Mickey while listening to the cute music to it.

Ours is sitting next to our Disney Snow globes. I took the batteries out so they wouldn't leak. He will be with us again in May at WDW!!

We bought one of these years ago and it was fun but pretty repetitive pretty quickly.

What ever happened to them?

Do they still sell them/will mine still work?

I heard that they were going to roll it out to other characters with pal pooh being the next in line but It seems like they just abandoned ship.

Must have had a falling out with someone...

I have 2 Pal Mickeys 1st & 2nd generation that live in the MH to keep me company when I get lonely for the mouse. I love all the corny jokes.

Getting back to the point...Does anybody even remember the first way they wanted to use My Disney Experience? I still remember hearing about this test in 2008 called Disney's Magic Connection for the Nintendo DS....Yes...The Nintendo DS....In the same vein of Pal Mickey you used the DS through the park for times, maps and play games...They even had a rental DS for a whopping $300 to use it...

My light up pin from 2000 still works! (I've had to change the battery twice since then)

Well that is great to hear!
I used to bring mine to the MK once in a while to test and see if it still worked, but it has been a few years now.
Also, my 2001 pin seems to eat batteries like crazy.
Two interactions, and poof...batteries dead.

It worked much better when it still had it*s original batteries.
Once i had to start replacing them it never lasted as long as previously.
Need to see if i had the wrong ones....

Anyway, many thanks for getting back to me about them.
I have been curious.
