Walt Disney World Aerial Views (And More)

Hey guys, I just found this:

http://earth.google.com/

Download it, and play, its amazing! The most amazing pictures of WDW from above, as well as the rest of the world (some better than others as they update). Additional features are 3D views of some cities, like NY.

WDW shots really are great, pan tilt and zoom tools too so you can look from any angle, and any height!!

Have fun!

Not to be picky but the correct spelling is "aerial". This is going to come up on a lot of searches for the Little Mermaid.

Welcome to, I don't know, six years ago?

We have lots and lots and lots of sat images of WDW on the site already.

So you know, the images of the WDW area on Google Earth haven't been updated since late 2002.

Blond moment with aerial!! Blimey.

Sorry, I thought this was a new thing thats why I posted. Sorry to take you time Thrawn, it must take your ages to come up with these clever posts :p. I thought they were recent until you said, hence the post, cos I didn't notice the construction walls around M:S.

OneVader, didn't see that, and normally I see everything on the forums! LOL. If anyone missed the post two, well have fun with this free program!

I was just talking about the google satalite images the other day being so old. Do you know when they are really from? I know you are saying 2002 but if you look at where Mickey's Toontown Fair is it looks like Mickey's Birthdayland. Or am I mistaken that the tops of the buildings still look like that even though the fronts have been changed?

Also, do you or anyone know where they are getting the images. Google has not been doing this for too long so you would expect newer images.

Thanks,
Mike

I could be wrong now that I am looking. I was using google maps and you can select satalite images. I am wondering if the google earth ones are newer. I will have to check it out.

They are the same images, so my questions still stand. :)

I would say the images came from late 2002/early 2003. Mickey's Toontoon Fair's tents still look like that.

Google did not go out and acquire this themselves. They recently bought a company called Keyhole who has had a program similar to Google Earth for several years. The data itself comes from different suppliers that obtain images either by satellite or by planes flying overhead. Areas are updated every few years or so, so I wouldn't be surprised to see more recent WDW imagery within the next year or two.

Zoom on over to EPCOT and you can see Mission Space with a construction wall still up out front and some construx equipment out back. That should narrow the time frame.

Yeah it stinks that they don't have the High res. pics for all of property, thats why you get the blurry area, like around animal kingdom. I would assume they would update the pictures at some point.

Animal Kingdom used to be in a higher resolution, back before the new Primary Database came online. They had to remove that data for business reasons (I think they had to remove any data supplied by AirPhoto USA). If you were a Keyhole/Google Earth subscriber before the new database came online, you can still choose to use the Legacy Database. Here's how Animal Kingdom looks in that one:
<a href="http://img142.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ak7sk.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/4959/ak7sk.th.jpg" border="0" /></a>
Notice that this is even older than the other parks. Dino-Rama is still nothing but dirt.

I did a little more digging as to the date of the high resolution images. They are definitely from before mid-December 2002. If you look in front of the Crystal Palace restaurant you'll see the construction wall that was put up during its rehab.

Believe it or not, those ARE the updated pictures. They had some older photos (under the old Keyhole system) where you could clearly see the Studios, contstruction for Pop Century, etc. These newer photos are more colorized (I think the old ones were B/W), but blurrier. Same thing over my house in Ga. The decent photography stops about half a mile from it.
:brick:

EDIT -- that's what I get for posting before I read the entire thread. D'oh!

Even the older sat pictures of AK make me wonder whether there is any serious room for expansion in the current backstage area due east of Discovery Island...
