Tomorrowland is perpetually troubled. So why is it so popular?

Why is Tomorrowland both troubled and popular?

  1. It's not crowded! It's called a bottleneck, Bozo!

Since opening day, Tomorrowland has always had the problem of needing to keep up with the ever shifting view of the future. They've settled on the "retro future" version of things in order to try and avoid this problem. But we all know it, this land has always had huge problems. If you talk to any huge Disney fan, they'd all say the same thing. So it begs the question, why is it so massively popular? The land is always full. Shoulder to shoulder crowds, and the longest waits anywhere in the park. Why?

I would say it's the combination of the amount of rides it has and the popularity of most of those rides. It has more rides than any of the lands except Fantasyland.

The answer to your question is simple: the attractions. Space (need I say more?), Star Tours, Buzz, etc...all very popular rides. Space is the deal breaker.

The vast majority of people couldn't care less.

As the others have already said, for some, going to the parks is about taking in the details and ambiance and soaking up all of the sights and sounds. For others, it's just about racing from attraction to attraction to get in as many rides as the little kiddos can handle. So, in that aspect, Tomorrowland is a favorite because of the attractions and they don't bother to look around at what the theme is and how poorly the detail compares to all of the other lands.

Reassurance and optimism. Tomorrowland as an idea is incredibly powerful.

I think most people are too involved in running from attraction to attraction to even care about where they are. Disneyland can get away with a poor environment based on reputation and the look of the other lands while DCA couldn't because it was cheap looking and had no street cred.

Lots of popular things to do:

Astro Orbiter,Autopia, Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blasters, Monorail, Disneyland Railroad, Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage, Jedi Training Academy, Space Mountain, Star Tours, Star Wars Launch Bay, Star Wars: Path of the Jedi. And 80's cover bands!

Lots of popular merchandise to look over:

Autopia's Winner Circle,Little Green Men Store Command, The Star Trader, Tomorrowlanding.

    Food options:

Redd Rockett's Pizza Port, The Spirit of Refreshment, Galactic Grill.

TL is a mess if viewed as stacking up to what Walt originally intended. It's wildly successful as a mish-mash of vaguely futuristic experiences.

They have? I don't see a cohesive theme at all. The collection of rides, shows, restaurants, and shops in TL is nonsensical.

I like the idea of Tomorrowland more than I like the land itself. It's a letdown in its current form but I cling to the idea it could be awesome someday.

Tomorrowland is where all the cool people with strollers go to meet and check out each others strollers.

    Come on guys....
We all know the REAL reason all those Guests are packed into Tomorrowland is so they can listen to the awesome 'Tomorrowland 2055 background music loop'....!

That musical composition is just utterly awesome to hear within a Park atmosphere.

Seriously. They should just call it Strollerland. It's a mystery to me why there are so many strollers at DL now. It wasn't always like that.

Tomorrowland suffers from a flawed design (sorry Walt). Very few examples of two attraction spaces across a corridor from one another exist. For good reason!

Attractions rimming a berm (none demonstratably better than the simple yet elegant Epcot layout) are the better design choice. The one other one that immediately jumps to mind is Pan across from Small World in MK... it sucks!

Fantasyland works in part because it splays open.

Then Baxter had the ever so fine idea to plop an attraction in front of said bottle neck.

The only way out of this situation is to level and push back one of the two flanking buildings. Or add a second level walkway akin to Shanghai. Rotting infrastructure everywhere clogs up a land with several relatively popular attractions and ever so much wasted/unused space.

Excellent points, and I'll add that the placement of the Peoplemover track supports down the center doesn't help. Makes me wonder if the shift to having the tracks split to the buildings on either side at The MK was an attempt to correct this.

The other dumb thing Baxter did was to create a pinch point between the TL Terrace and the Rocket Jets deck structure. The overall incompetence displayed in the design of TL '98 should be a case study on how not to design inside a Disney theme park.

Does anyone else think the TRON ride will replace the Carousel of Progress building?

No because we get the Avengers Coaster using the same tech. Regardless, the COP Building Is not enough room by itself. They would probably have to use some of Autopia/ Subs space.

... unless they make it another spiral all the way down like Space Mountain but no thanks.

That wasn't a problem when the original plans for Star Wars were to replace the cars and subs with the Endor Moon. Too bad they never went through with that.
