LOS ANGELES - Hair has won out over Harry Potter at the weekend box office.

Mandy Moore's animated musical "Tangled," a new take on long-haired fairy-tale princess Rapunzel, sewed up the No. 1 spot with $21.5 million in its second weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. That raised the Disney release's domestic total to $96.5 million.

"Tangled" had debuted in second-place over Thanksgiving behind "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1," which had been at the top of the box office the two previous weekends.

"Harry Potter" slipped to No. 2 this weekend with $16.7 million. The next-to-last chapter in the Warner Bros. franchise about the teen wizard lifted its domestic haul to $244.2 million.

Playing largely to family crowds, "Tangled" should hold on well through the holidays, said Chuck Viane, head of distribution for Disney.

"It's not very often the second week of a movie that it ends up the No. 1 movie," Viane said. "This will be one of those leggy movies that just keeps playing and playing."

Business was off sharply after a brisk Thanksgiving weekend, which is one of the busiest periods of the year at movie theaters.

With just $88 million in overall receipts, this was Hollywood's second-worst weekend of the year, behind the meager $81.8 million haul the weekend after Labor Day, according to box-office tracker Hollywood.com.

"It was a bad weekend," said Paul Dergarabedian, analyst for Hollywood.com. "It just shows that people got a lot of their movie-going out of the way over that five-day Thanksgiving weekend, and this weekend, they went, `Ahh, we've seen it.'"

Overall revenues also were down from last year. The $88 million in revenue was off 11.5 percent compared to the same weekend in 2009, when "The Blind Side" led the box office with $20 million, according to Hollywood.com.

Good for Tangled. It looks like a nice little movie.

What this has to do with WDW, though, I have no idea.

Tangled came along at the right time -- it's decent Disney when there aren't any other family films out --- Is it a classic? Only in the way that Mulan and Pocohantas are "classics"...good, but ultimately forgettable.

Potter isn't appropriate for anyone under 10, and it made its primary money off of pre-teen and adult audiences -- it also has zero rewatchability -- I don't know a single person who would go spend the three hours to watch THAT again...whereas the local multiplex is filled with tweeners seeing Tangled a second or third time...In this case, splitting the final Potter movie into two parts so that they make more money will ultimately mean a shorter run at the top of the charts (and a long lifeless movie where almost nothing happens for three hours).

That being said -- I hope Disney has nothing coming out next summer within 6 weeks of Deathly Hallows Part II coming out -- you want to see an unstoppable money maker, that will be it, as every man woman and child clammers to see it, even those who have skipped the last couple movies.

Tangled has one thing that both thoe movies don't have: critical acclaim. This movie is way beyond Pocahontas and Mulan status already. I hear the buzz all around for this movie and everyone wants to see it (surprisingly).

It's the 2nd of the new Disney renaissance :)

So, is Tangled a fad or a classic? :lookaroun

Classic. :)

I agree. I thought it was good, but forgettable when compared to the biggest Disney classics.

Especially the songs. Heck, I thought the songs in Princess and the Frog were more memorable and that's saying a lot. Disney seriously needs to look to newer and fresher talent when it comes to song writing in their movies.

Maybe it's a lie, just like the cake :lookaroun

Aperture Science... we do what we must, because we can. For the good of all of us... except the ones who are dead.

Well, that just proves that tastes vary. I liked these way more than PatF's songs. (I'm not a Randy Newman fan... not that there's anything wrong with that.)

I must say, though, they're not quite as catchy as some of Menken's best, and my favorite one ("Mother Knows Best") is cut short in the movie compared to the soundtrack. Still, it's Menken doing what he does well.

I want Alan Menken to score my life.

Disco Yeti: The Musical. It'll be a Broadway smash.

I liked Tangled...probably my favorite of the newer Disney animated movies since maybe Meet the Robinsons. While it did well this week, I don't know for sure how long its legs really will hold out. I'm guessing maybe two or three more decent weeks, then it will dwindle down. Still, I enjoyed it and would like to see more Tangled representation in the parks.

I don't know one single person who has seen that movie twice though, or plans to see it again. Me personally, I probably wouldn't pay to see it again...but I do plan on going back around Christmas time and seeing Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1 again.

It doesn't bother me in the least. If we can start talking about non-WDW Parks news and Rumors on the News and Rumors forums, great! I saw "Black Swan" this weekend. It was pretty good.
Meh...it's no worse then the "Burbank...we have a problem" thread.

That one contains no news at all.

If the mods move a thread, they move it. If they don't...well...it's not really our problem.

I took my 3 youngest to see it and we adored it.. I have not been a fan of many since The Littler Mermaid and I can say this is #2 for animated "princess" type movies ..
