Surprised by Contemporary Hotel rooms

I am a local who has been going to WDW for a very long time. I have always been fascinated by the look of the Contemporary and I love how the monorail goes right through the hotel (I'm a monorail fan!). Ever since going to WDW as a kid I have wanted to stay over at the Contemporary, but it wasn't until my 40th birthday this year that I finally decided to save up and splurge for a few nights at the hotel.

This was the first time I've ever stayed "on property", but most of the things I've read and heard about WDW hotels is how clean they are and how nice the rooms look. And while the public areas at the CR were incredibly nice, I was shocked to see some of the problems in the room...especially for a "deluxe resort" and one at this high of a price level.

The marble bath was quite luxurious, but not much else was. Closet doors wouldn't close properly due to trouble with the hinges, lamp shades looked cheap and were dented or crooked, the plastic electrical outlet covers were loose and dangling from the wall, the Wi-Fi in the room only worked about half of the time, the bed was really hard and the springs in it were noisy, the mini-fridge worked intermittently, and there were other cosmetic issues as well. Furniture was also badly chipped or scuffed up, but that is the one thing I can kind of understand since this is a room that is going to see a lot of kids and children in it.

But the absolute WORST issue was that there was an area on one wall where there were multiple strips of paint (each about 3-5 inches in length) that had peeled completely off from the wall. This was in a prominent area and it could be seen anytime you were in the main room area and it was pretty much in your face every time you passed under it--it was just above the walkway arch, so we're not talking about something a little kid was able to do. I can't emphasize enough about what an eyesore this was and how cheap it made the room feel (especially on top of the other issues).

Additionally, housekeeping totally skipped us one day even though we were out of the room all day and we made absolutely sure not to have the 'privacy' tag on the door.

My wife and I are not picky or fussy and just one or two of these issues would not have bothered us much, but everything combined--especially with the peeled-away paint--really made me regret the amount of money we spent to stay here after saving for so long to do it.

Some people would say we should have complained during our trip, but my wife and I are not the kind of people who like to complain 'on the spot', because it takes us even more out of vacation mode than we already are when problems come up. The whole idea of being on vacation is to get away from problems, not having to deal with them. However, I did send comments to WDW since our return.

I so wanted to love my stay here and I did enjoy just being a room away from the monorail and I loved walking out and seeing the monorails come and go and I enjoyed looking down at the main concourse. However, that did not justify the price of the room, even taking the convenience of being so close to the parks and the cool factor of the monorail into account.

Should anyone be interested in my full review, it can be read here:

Disturbing to read, we have stayed at the Contemporary many times, pre and post refurbishment. Our rooms were always clean and everything functioned properly. The only time we encountered any issue with our room was at the Polynesian pre refurbishment. The safe never worked and the bathroom was rather moldy.

I can at least say the room was "clean" in terms of housekeeping (except for the day they totally missed the room). It was the condition of the room and the lack of functionality that was so bad.

I realize that I'm paying a premium to stay on-property, so I wasn't expecting a room as nice as the Ritz Carlton or the Four Seasons (although the prices were not that much different). I expected at least a room in as decent of condition or as nice as a Westin or decent Marriott, but I've even stayed at those chains and had better rooms than was at the CR.

I know some people take some TripAdvisor reviews with a grain of salt (although I try to give objective, helpful and thorough reviews myself), but I did read a lot of other CR reviews on TA that mentioned some of the exact same specific problems I had. So it sounds like it's much worse than me just getting a 'bad room'. The paint issue is also something I read on other reviews, so unless the people saying this all got the same room, there is definitely some kind of problem with the paint job in the rooms.

I'm still quite sad to have had my dream of staying there end up with some buyer's remorse as far as the room, but I will still definitely go back to the Contemporary to enjoy the public areas and the monorail :)

At first I thought the photos I had taken of the paint were gone (I had deleted them trying to forget the bad room experience). But I have found a photo of the stripped paint from my back-up drive:

Wow - it almost looks like someone used tape to hang a sheet or something as a room divider and then ripped it off? They should fix something like that before re-assigning the room.

When I sent a letter to WDW after our trip I told them about the room and about this paint problem and even gave them the room # we stayed in...hopefully it will be rectified. But as I said, I've read other reviews where other people also mentioned about missing paint that sounded like a similar problem as this.

There's really no excuse to give out a room in that shape. One would hope that housekeeping would have said something to maintenance department, yet the problem obviously wasn't fixed before we were given the room.

Like I said, there were a lot of other issues too, but this mess with the paint was really kind of shocking for a hotel at this level and at this price range.

While you and your wife may not be the type of people to complain and ruin the mood of the vactaion, that peeling paint, combined with all the other problems you mentioned would have been enough for us to get an on duty come manager up to that room and then reassign us to a different one. In 20+ trips we have stayed at the CR at least 15 times, booking two rooms each trip because we have 5 adults. At $500+ per room that is totally unacceptable no matter how patient you may be. From about 1997 until 2007 or so, the CR, while overpirced was still always in good condition. In the last several trips we have noticed a definite slip in the quality of the maintenance related cleanliness of the hotel, both in the rooms and the common areas, specifically on the 4th floor concourse. We're fortunate to be able to stay at the CR for it's convenient location and most of it's ameneties and will probably stay there on our next trip, but we will visit the Four Seasons to do some comparison shopping.

I've made calm and detailed complaints to the management while at the resort and my concerns were always dealt with immediately. Not always completely to my liking, but dealt with nonetheless. However, when I've sent my concrerns via mail or email, I've received a response just once. Please let us know if you hear from the CR management and how they responsed to your letter.

I don't like to complain much myself, but in a case like that, if I'm shelling out a LOT (too much) of my own hard-earned money to stay in what they call a "deluxe" resort, then I would expect the room I'm staying in to look "deluxe" in quality. I wouldn't have let that slide without a call down to the front desk. At the very least they could have moved you to another room and then got to work to fix those issues.

I know you didn't want to have to deal with complaining and having these issues on vacation time- but surely having to deal with the sub-par room the entire stay was worse than spending a part of your time talking to someone about it? Which could of resulted in a more positive outcome/experience for the rest of your vacation?

I hope they get back to you anyway, you shouldn't of had to of been met with these issues in the first place.

For the money you should not have have issues like that. I mean I have paid 79$ a night for POP and not had any paint coming off the walls. It had been around 15 years since I stayed at the contemporary. Even then I thought the rooms were underwhelming, they were in good shape.

There definitely was a huge disappointment factor to the room. In retrospect I do wish we had said something on the spot--especially after so many years of building up of excitement for a stay, only for it to end in a room like this.

While the hotel was supposed to be the highlight of the trip, we did still visit the parks, so we were not in the room all that much, but if it was a vacation where we were in the room a lot, I do think I would have had to have said something. I'm just really sad that what I always thought was going to be such an amazing stay at my beloved CR was marred by such a bad room.

I know I would have said something on the spot, to the front desk. Taking time away from your vacation is not fun, and Disney knows that. I would asked to be moved to a room without problems, if not there then somewhere. If that could not be accomplished I would ask for a simple deduction off the room rate. If lft up to the front desk they will make a note to the people who can fix the problems, if you have an acceptable solution to offer that would make your vacation as enjoyable as you wanted it to be they usually go for it.

Several years ago we stayed at Sports with two rooms. Our daughter took a shower as we first checked in and got burned by the water suddenly turning to all HOT. Our room, adjoining them had damp carpet. I called the front desk without knowing of her problem next door, they verified the carpet had not been recently cleaned, and thus damp from that. We made our way to the front desk to find our daughter and husband there discussing the shower issue as well. We changed rooms later that night when they found us adjoining rooms in a different building, they moved us, gave us a gift basket, discounted our rooms all of which we did not ask for. We just stated facts, said we were on vacation and did not want to deal with problems. I was more than happy with the solutions after expressing our disappointment with the rooms. They did try to fix the hot water problem but turns out the whole building was going to have to shut down to fix it.

That looks like a case of water/condensation leakage, probably bubbled up and popped/scraped. Looks like maintenance took a look but forgot to finish touching up. Hopefully there isn't any mold...

Either way, inexcusable.

We stayed in a bay lake tower room a year ago, and it did not live up to my first stay there in 2001. Very disappointing! So I feel you, we didn't complain, but you should.

I'm guessing that is a typo on 2001, but anyway, we stayed at BLT last year and it did seem to have some wear and minor issues you would not expect in such an expensive room. I suppose the rates at CR are mostly because of location, but there is no real excuse for much less than perfect at those rates. We stayed at Ritz Carlton Grande Lakes this past May for about one third the Disney CR rate...and it was much nicer...but alas, no monorail or MK view.

It was not, stayed in bay lake tower rooms in 2001 and last year, 2013.

I'm not crazy nostalgic driven or anything, but I loved the old school 90's Contemporary... the purple and green, red and yellow... I don't know, I never remember any problems during my stay in 2001.

You could not have stayed at Bay Lake Tower in 2001 as the North Garden Wing was not demolished until 2007 with Bay Lake Tower opening in Fall 2009.
