We will be going to MK the morning of the same day that we will attend the Halloween party. Will we need to exit the park and come back in with the special event ticket? I'm curious how Disney manages who gets in.

No. You will not. You just need to go and find a CM starting around 4pm that has the Halloween party bands for the evening. They'll check to see that you have a ticket for the party and then give you a separate band that you keep on for the night.
Do make sure you keep this band on as they do sweep and clear out guests without them on after 7pm.

If you're still confused, just head to Guest Relations at the entrance at 4pm. That is when the Halloween Party guests can start to enter the park. They'll be more than happy to assist you and help your day be one seamless venture.

There should be 1 or 2 locations in park, in addition to the main gate. Had been in the rose garden, but I have seen they are doing them in Tomorrowland near Stitch, or Adventureland near Pirates. They need to scan your party ticket and will then give you the wristband, candy bag, and party map. You will see CMs in awesomely hideous uniforms, think purple pants/skirts with a lime green striped top accented with purple bats, and perhaps a candy corn colored apron. They will look quite out of place compared to the other CMs in the given land.
