Jan 4th 2007 Part 5 (Disney Cruise Line)

Disney Wonder.
Category 6 with veranda.
Room 6618 AFT

Room is right by the Elevators. We heard nothing no noise or anything.
Room Slept 4 people. Queen size bed, the couch flipped into a bed and there was a bed that was lowered from the ceiling nightly.

Our CM for the room was Conrad, he was great the room was cleaned 2 times a day. once when we went to breakfast and once while we were at dinner. they are also do the bedding for you. if you need the bed lowered from the ceiling in the afternoon for a nap you need to call guest services and they will send someone up to do it other wise it gets lowered while you are at dinner.

The room is plenty big enough to sleep 4 comfortably. only thing i wish is if the bathrooms were a little bigger. the bathroom is actually 2 different room one room with a shower and a sink the other with the toilet and a sink. the toilet room is very very small. When i say small i mean if you stand up the wrong way youo will bump your head on the towel rack. That my friends is the ONLY complaint that i have.

Day 1: Arrival- we were greeted by a CM and she asked us our last name. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN PLEASE WELCOME "THE HAKE FAMILY". Right then and there i looked at my 2 children and their faces just lit up. Everyone in the Lobby was clapping. They thought it was the greatest thing.

About an hr on the ship we had to do the life boat drill at 3:30. that took about a half hr. we roamed around the ship for a little bit then went to dinner. We had first seating at 5:30.

Dinner the first evening was at Triton's. We met our server his name was Ramsey, from India. This my friends is where the real magic starts. Ramsey comes over and introduces himself to us, hands us the menu and got to know a little about us. Me, I'm not a big fancy dinner kinda guy, i don't dress up and what not to go out and eat. i wore shorts and a polo shirt to dinner and it seamed most were dressed like me. i like iceberg lettuce, i don't like many veggies, more of a meat and potato kind of guy. I let Ramsey know all this and he made note of it. My daughter spilled her drink during dinner. I'm telling you all this for a reason. which i will get to. The highlight of the dinner was desert. Ramsey came back took our desert orders. He asked me what i wanted and i said nothing. He comes back liek 10 min later and has a plate for me as well. i lift the lid and on the plate in chocolate syrup was the word "nothing" Right then and there i knew this trip would be everything it was cracked up to be.

After dinner we went and took photos with the different characters. well my daughter and i did. She got her photo taken with Mickey and Minny, a few of the Princesses then we went and found my wife and son and they got a few more photos. We stumbled upon Alice and the Mad Hatter. they were by far the best, had the kids cracking up telling jokes, hiding from each other. just plain nonsense.
Next the kids wanted to see the Oceaneer Lab. The wife and I went and check out some of the night spots on board. We headed into the sports bar diversions. We are a young couple and im into sports i felt right at home in this place we started talking to a few people and spent about an 2 hrs there. we also walked around and got the lay of the land. by that time it was 11:00 we went and got the kids from the lab. they didnt want to leave but we had shore excursions to do early in the AM and wanted them to be rested. they exchanged phone numbers with a few friends they had made and we were out of there.. We get back to the room, wife is in the shower, im out on the veranda and hear a knock on the door. Without us knowing my 8 year old daughter took it upon herself to order a bowl of fruit for her and her brother from room service hahah. Cute. Bed Time.

Day 2
Port of call: Nassau.
After breakfast we were going to all go on land and walk around downtown. Plans changed the kids wanted to go to the oceaneers lab. We remembered what the gentleman at the AK resort told us. (Let your children have fun or you will regret it) We checked them into the lab and walked around downtown Nassau and hit up the straw market. Wife had a blast there. Wife paid to get her hair done it was 2.00 a braid. She got 20 if them. (SAVINGS ALERT: Braids A 1.00 each on castaway cay) So we spent about 3 hrs there and returned to the boat around lunch time. The kids were at the animators pallet for lunch. We had a shore excursion planned to go to the Atlantis resort and casino. The kids were having so much fun that they didn't want to leave and go with us. But we paid for them so they had to go but weren't happy about it.

Now the resort is on a different part of the island and is worth going to check out. I dont think anything in Las Vegas even comes close to it. The place is huge. I wanted to go see the big aquariums there, that was the main reason for going. WHAT A WASTE. the set up was nice and the scenery was cool. they made it look like you were looking at the sunken city of Atlantis but the fish they had in there we very very ugly looking. i have nicer looking saltwater fish and coral in my tanks at home. i was VERY disapointed. Is it worth the 30 bucks no. cost us about 120 for 4 people. Grrr. But once again the resort is beautiful. the aquariums stink.

We head back to the boat and stopped at a souvenir stand becuase my daughter had to spend her money. nothing like an 8 year old trying to wheel and deal with the lady. The lady would tell her the jewelry was 20.00 and she said ok i have 20 dollars. hahah i would have to step in and tell her no lets keep looking. finally the lady gave her 3 necklaces for 20 bucks so she was happy.

We missed dinner that night and Ramsey our server knew we would not be there. The dinner was at animators pallet and we missed it. bummed me right out. we also had a pirate dinner there as well, but they didnt light it up. We ended up letting kids go swim and we ate burgers and fries pool side. Kids went back to the lab, wife and i watched the BCS championship on the deck on the huge tv. Went down to the sports bar because it was rather windy on decks 9 and 10 that night. We had a few drinks with a couple we meet on land when she was getting her hair done. We got the kids about midnight from the lab and they were wide awake still. They had a blast. oh I also went to shutters after dinner and grabbed the photo that my daughter took with mickey the previous night. that was 40.00 bucks with the frame. that was worth it to me. i didnt want anything but that. Just the smile on my daughters face was worth what ever price they were asking.

Day 3 Castaway Cay. We had 2 excursions planned here. One was snorkeling the other was the fun pack which included snorkel gear and tubes. The weather was overcast and the waves were high, they canceled the snorkel trip and the glass bottom boat trip. i was very upset about that but what could ya do. better to be safe then sorry. so we rented a few kayaks. Snorkeled in Disney's area my son and i were out there for 2 hrs looking around. Later on a took my daughter out on a tube and then carried her out so she could see Mickey Mouse under the water. What is nice about the snorkel are they have on castaway cay is the have markers above water so you know where the main attractions are under the water. we spent all day on the island until like 4:00. went back and got ready for dinner.

Dinner on the 3rd night was at animators pallet again but was the pirate dinner. Remember my last dinner at triton's i was telling you all that for this reason. Ramsey was ready for me this time. he had my iceberg lettuce and ranch dressing. He remembered my daughter spilled her drink the first night and had a spill proof cup for her. Ramsey remembered everyones name. He talked to the kids like he knew them and like he was sad that he missed them the night before. remember now my daughter is 8 and back home you dont get this kind of attention when you go out to eat so she is taking this all in. I didnt want the iceberg lettuce tonight though and he had it ready for me. they had a jerk chicken salad with lime vinegarette dressing i wanted to try. WOW was that dressing fantastic. I asked Ramsey to get the recipe for me and he just laughed. But said he could make it so i got the dressing the next night on my salad. that was fine with me. Dinner was fantastic again. Dress was casual or you could dress up like a pirate. i didnt notice many people other then the CM's Dressed up, but then again i wasnt looking.

After dinner we went and got more autographs for the kids. We went to the theater and watched the golden mickeys. that was a very nice show. After that the kids when back to the lab to meet their friends and wife and i headed to the adult clubs. we watched a few game shows, had a few drinks, and a few more drinks, and even a few more after that. It was about 12:30 when we grabbed the kids and headed back. i met all their friends and parents. I was in no condition to do that and hope i didnt leave a bad impression but heck, i didnt have to drive anywhere. Time for bed. OH there was also fireworks at 10:00 on decks 9 and 10, that was nice cool too.

Day 4 - Day at sea. let me sum this day up like this.
Breakfast, Kids to the Lab, mom and dad, back to bed. it was cold and windy out to so not much going on at the pools. We did eat lunch and kinda just relaxed the whole day. watched a movie stuff like that.

At 4:00 they had a graduation ceremony for the kids that went to the lab. They brought all the kids on stage, gave them mickey hats with ears and tassels as well as D SEA U t-shirts. They were singing songs and Mickey and Minny came out and sang with them. There had to be 250 kids on stage. It was just another one of the priceless moments provided by Disney. I felt happy, happy to see my children having the time of their lives. Im not sure what was more special then that. im not sure it could happen any place other then Disney. But it was sure a great feeling.

Dinner was at parrot cay. this was the last night we were going to see Mr Ramsey as my daughter calls him. My salad came with my lime dressing, my daughter got her ice cream. All this with out even having to ask him. He made the kids laugh some more and even made a mouse with the cloth napkin and gave it to my daughter to take home. All the while my daughter is taking this all in. Ramsey informed us where and what time our breakfast was in the morning. This would be out last time seeing him. We told him that we probably wouldnt be there because we had an early flight back and had to be off the boat by 8am. We gave him his tip and said our good byes.
We went that night and caught Disney Dreams. We had front row center, we sat with my daughters friends and their family as well. they were really nice. Dreams was fantastic the kids loved it, i loved it, everyone loved it. If you go you must see this production. Plain and simple go not to sound corny but its magical. After the play was over my daughter exchanged email address with her friend from Montana she met in the lab and we went back to the room.

Our luggage had to be outside the room for them to take by 11:00 so we packed up and went to sleep.

Everything im telling you leads to this moment.

Day 5 - time to go.

We wake up shower finish packing the carry on bags. Kids go up to deck 9 to get some juice. Mina (my daughter) comes back crying and i dont mean a little cry, i mean bawling. She is so upset that she is never going to see or talk to Mr Ramsey again. My wife and I are smiling because we think its cute, but this went on for a half hr. So i said i would take her down there so she could say good bye to him. We get down to the restaurant and its closed. She starts crying again. i asked the greeter if we could go say good bye to our server Ramsey. My daughter sees him, runs up to him bawling, he is comforting her and she is telling him how much she is going to miss him and how she is sad that she will never see him again. He is down on his knee's giving her a big hug, i now have a tear in my eye because of how genuine she is about this. Ramsey takes a picture with her and i tell him thank you for making this so special for her. now this my friends is what its all about.

leaving the boat was easy as 123. every thing was billed to our debit card. no need to go to guest services to pay for anything. our luggage was waiting for us in the section disney told us it would be in. tipped a porter 10 bucks to carry it to the buses. the air line company's were at the bus depot allowing us to check in right there. no need to do it at the airport. went through security at the airport and arrived back home to a cold Erie, Pa.

Would i do it again? YES
Was it worth every penny? YES
Did we all have fun? Yes
Do my kids want to go back to disney world? No
Do my kids want to go back on the Cruise? YES (Their words exactly)

Just a little update my daughter cried every day for 1 week because she missed Ramsey. I called Disney to find out if there was a way she could send him a letter and a copy of the picture they took together and they gave me all the info.

Thanks Disney

We are thinking about taking our second Disney cruise sometime in the next year, and your post made me so anxious to go right away! Our first one was in September, and we got a discounted rate because it was hurricane season. We did get rerouted but had a fabulous time nonetheless. In considering a time of year for our next cruise, I have to wonder if that is the best time to go. My kids cannot miss as much school as they could when they were younger, so of course summer would be ideal, but so very hot. Plus it looks like the ships will be in Europe all this summer. Dream vacation, but not affordable, and too much time for my hubby to be away from the office. Our neighbors went in early February and said it was too chilly to enjoy the outdoor activities. (We live in the Sunny South, so we when we go to the Carribean, we expect it to be REALLY warm!)
So, who can offer me some tips about the best time of year to go, the best way to get a deal, and any "secrets"?

Booking our 2nd land/sea today. we are going oct 30th 2008. I can wait to be down there for Halloween. The kids and wife are going to love it. not to mention my wifes birthday is Oct 31st.

This go round though we are staying in moderate resort and an inside cabin. 1000 Dollars cheaper. After think about how often we used the veranda and what we used it for (coffee and smoking) its just not worth it this trip anyway. Smoked about 15 cigarettes that equals $66.67 per smoke. Wow was i crazy.

Great report. We have been considering the cruise for our daughter's graduation trip next year. Your report has only helped in confirming that it would be a great idea.
