Pre-Trip George and Scott plan a family-free ToT Ten Miler trip

I guess you could say that the beginnings of this thread started in another Trip Report. Mine actually. In November of last year I took a trip to run in my first runDisney race, the Wine and Dine 1/2 Marathon. I finished the race, had a good time, got home, wrote up my trip report. Next thing I know, I get a message in my WDWMagic Inbox from @George

Scott,
I read the beginning of your trip report and it gave me an idea. Since my kids are school age, the Disney races aren't at good times, would you consider doing a half marathon or Tower of Terror Ten Miler with me? We could pick the exact dates and times later, since there are 4 or 5 options.
Thoughts?
- - George

With this, the seeds of a trip were planted.

We've had a few brief conversations via phone and PM to set some of the basics. We decided upon the Tower of Terror Ten Miler race, in October 2014, mostly because we're excited for the afterparty at DHS. We've registered for the race.

We've also somehow gotten the blessings of our spouses that this trip will be "solo". Just two gentlemen heading down for some wholesome fun, to run a 10 mile race through the WDW Property, to ride some rides, enjoy some of the fine food options, and have a good time enjoying the parks without kids slowing us down there to join us in the fun. I've even got my wife to let me put off telling my kids until just about a week before I leave for the race, so I don't have to spend the next 8 months with my children openly hating me.

What I thought would be fun though is if @George and I would make the plans for our trip out here in the trip report forum under a Pre-Trip heading. That way we can solicit the opinions of anyone who would be so inclined to read this little thread, and we can utilize the vast knowledge of our fellow WDWMagic fans to prepare a great short vacation.

So, to start off @George I think we firm up the dates. I'm thinking we fly down on Thursday, 10/2 and return on Monday 10/6. That'd give us a couple days in which we're not being asked to run ungodly distances where we can enjoy the parks. A day or two prior to the race, and a day or two limping around after the race.

I think the flight schedules open up soonish, so if you'd like to fly out of your local airport and meet me down there, or if you'd like to pop up to my place and stay on Wednesday night and we fly together out of Midway, that would work as well. If we did that, it would give me the added benefit of staging a faux kidnapping in front of my kids so that I can claim plausible deniability in knowingly leaving them to go to WDW.

Based on the fact that for the first time in months I ran 10 miles today, the thing I'm looking forward to today is

The actual Tower of Terror 10-miler race

Today's run was back in my home town, past forests, rivers, farms, and various pieces of road kill. I have this to say. Sometimes running can be boring. Most of the time today there were not even cars to be seen.
That won't be the case 20 days from now lining up to run the race with thousands of other people. Based on the 1/2 marathon last year, Disney does an amazing job of keeping the energy up on the course. Music, characters, cast members cheering, awesome decorations. You hit a point maybe when you start dragging and the next thing you know you come upon something cool to get your energy back up. Aside from the corral issues I thought they had at the starting line last year, they really do a great job with their races. I'm really looking forward to the race itself!

Today, the thing I am looking forward to is:

Sneaking alcohol past security in MK to share spiked Dole Whips with @George and @ShookieJones

I've talked about it a little in this thread already. No wait, maybe a lot.

@ShookieJones and I have had the occasion to tip back a few adult beverages in the past. It's one of the few things I currently miss about the job I left over the summer. At my previous employer, I would be guaranteed that at least once every 3 months, I would be flying out to his neck of the woods for work, and I would make sure that one night was reserved for sharing a few drinks and a lot of laughs with him.

Since it just so happens that his last day at WDW is our first, a meetup is in order. Does alcohol have to be involved? Do we have to ruin the sanctity of the pristine MK with bootlegged alcohol? No, of course not!

Will it be a fun little treat? Hell yes it will.

I will be purchasing a little rum. I will be sneaking it in. We will be sharing a drink and a laugh before he has to head back home. It'll be a great way to christen our trip, and send him home right.

It sounds like you will have a lot of fun! I'm looking forward to reading all about it. I'm with you on the only way to really enjoy WS is without young kids. Mine are ages 4 and almost 2. I couldn't do much when I was there with them. I went last year on a girls trip with NO KIDS for F&W and we did everything and had the best time!

I am really looking forward to that. Last trip I think I spent a total of 4 hours in all Epcot, and a lot of that was in Akershus. It was the last day of the trip, and between trying to do WS or taking the girls back to do the greatest hits in MK one last time, it was a no brainer. WS was Norway for Akershus, Mexico for Gran Fiesta (the 3 Cabelleros is a family favorite) and Mariachi Cobre, and we were gone.
I am really looking forward to WS with a group of really fun adults. I'm looking forward to sharing beverages and stories with the whole gang!

We need time for things to happen.

Can't wait dude...Can't wait.
I definitely miss your journeys to the 'cut! Hmmm....If I'm not mistaken this will only knock our "drinking together every 3 months" streak off by about a month, so when we make this dole whip rum fest happen maybe we just consider the streak alive and continue accordingly!

So, I'll be back in The World in December, does that mean you're joining me for a drink?

Thing I'm looking forward to today. I am too lazy to count what number this is. This one may be the biggest one of all, but I feel like catching it today.

Meeting new/old friends

Ok, so the New/Old thing might be confusing, but it's kinda true. There are a few folks that I've met previously outside of WDWMagic. @George of course, and somehow I trusted him enough on our first meeting that I left my youngest kid at the table with him while I went after my oldest in the bathroom. If this were some crazy cop show, he'd have snatched the kid and left me a hastily scrawled ransom note on a Portillos napkin.
As I mentioned yesterday, I've had great times with @ShookieJones in the past, and if our trips lined up a little better, I'd have no doubt in my mind that we'd end up doing something hilarious late in the night that would likely result in a stern talking to from the local PD.
The great thing with this trip though is that I get to meet up with a whole stack of folks whom I've been talking to for a few years, but have not had the chance to meet yet! And, we get to do it at a place we are all obviously a bit obsessive about. I'm not super sure if folks want me blasting their vacation plans out to the world (I'll do the same with pictures I upload, I find it best to ask for permission rather than forgiveness). I will however say that there is a Kona Cafe ADR with 11 people on it, and I may be adding to that at some point!
That's the best part of this upcoming trip.
I'm looking forward to touring the parks with all you folks. I'm excited for running around DHS late night with @George and our cheering team of @Tiggerish @Nemo14 and @abeachchick. How fun is that going to be?
I'm looking forward to a big WDWMagic sendoff trip on Maelstrom!
I'm looking forward to stuffing my face at Trails End the morning of the race with WDWMagic folks!
I'm looking forward to WDWMagic folks rolling their eyes and trying to leave me behind as I yell at poor Future World cast members!
It's going to be a blast. Of all the things that I have written about and will write about, this one is my #1.

I'm looking forward to this too! I've met a few of the 11 before, but this is going to be sooooo cool! I'm not sure yet if I'll be there to cheer you on for the race, but we'll definitely be at the Kona Spectacular!
