This article is a few years old but it is still relevant especially considering the "highest grossing" piece isn't true when you adjust for inflation and the real impact on the ticket sales was the ground breaking 3-D effects which have kind of become common now.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/scottme...eaving-no-pop-culture-footprint/#43940cf1284b

Correction.. Highest grossing film of all time is true. Inflation is another argument. The whole top 10 grossing films look completely different but then again everything is different with Inflation. It's all about what did a film do relative to it's time. Also, I mentioned that the ticket sales didn't quite match the numbers, suggesting one thing.. 3d and IMAX sales which are still higher than any film to date. One really can't argue with the the numbers that Avatar produced, they are impressive and no movie in the modern era has come close. That said, I agree that the film didn't leave a cultural impact the way Star Wars or Harry Potter did, but that doesn't mean it won't make an excellent theme park experience. Again.. referencing Cars... It's numbers down right suck compared to Avatar and it's considered one of the worst Pixar movies.. especially Cars 2 which might be the worst and it made for one heck of a theme park attraction.

no its number two all time adjusted for inflation
as ive always said if it was just for the 3D how come its the top grossing Home market movie of all time
The highest grossing home video is Frozen and Avatar is only at the top in terms of blue ray movies which again is because visually it is spectacular at showing off the capabilities of the new technology in your home.

You have to laugh at the efforts some are going to in order to try to put the success of Avatar the movie down. I don't think I've seen one post on here where an individual is claiming that Avatar was even their all time favourite personal movie. When Harry Potter at Universal was being built were these same people saying they expected that to be uninteresting just because it wasn't the top grossing film of all time? Interestingly the first Potter movie made half what the first Avatar movie did, which was only out two years before it so inflation between the two was minimal.

If we're using stats to make points, the Potter sequels made far less than the original one which could possibly point out to Potter's interest waning year after year? Just to clarify that point, Avatar made double the amount at the box office than the original and most successful Potter movie ever did and yet we're trying to use Avatar's apparent 'lack of popularity' as a reason to put it down

Personally I don't think the stats are that important in the debate but to see those bringing them up to try to put Avatar down is somehow quite hilarious :D

I still laugh at the fact that some think the movie has anything to do with the success of the land.

There were actually people here who claimed that Potter was a passing fad and that the lands at Uni would ultimately be a failure.

Were there? Sorry I missed that. I really don't like the Potter movies at all but think Universal have done a great job at creating the lands, if they're built well I think most will enjoy them.

The difference between success and blowout success will be determined by Avatar's popularity.

Synergy. Synergy. Synergy.
Avatar isn't going to get that much more popular. It may become more relevant if/when the new films come out, but I don't see it suddenly becoming an epic franchise like Star Wars or even Harry Potter. I also don't think the franchise needs to be "epic" for the land to be a huge success.

Still think Star Wars Land isn't coming to WDW?

Let's just say I still have my doubts, Does TWDC want to build it (and do the fans DESPERATELY WANT IT), Yes, yes they do. Will Wall St ALLOW Disney to build it in the planned timeframe, I think the jury is still out on that one.

I'm surprised that Iger's vanity project got built because it was probably pitched to Wall St and BoD as the 'Potter Swatter' if it does not increase total attendance at WDW by 3-5% and instead cannibalizes guests from other WDW parks, I'm very much afraid Orlando SWL will be placed on hold not that it NEVER gets built but is delayed another 2-5 years.

What it needs to do is increase TOTAL visitors to WDW by 3-5 percent or I fear Wall St will say IXNAY to other new lands at WDW.

Wall Street has bigger fish to fry with TWDC. Unless we really see a big tourism or economic downturn very soon this thing is getting built and will open in 2019 or early 2020. If it's delayed it will be construction delays not financial engineering.

By the way, I wouldn't be surprised to see a 3-5% uptick in attendance this summer. Remember that Pandora brings us the first new true e-ticket at WDW in nearly a decade. They are also advertising the crap out of it. It's going to be a pretty big draw. Also, the attendance was down some last summer due to international economic issues, shootings and gator attacks so even without the Avatar bump things would probably look better year over year. Avatar will boost it further. Not Harry Potter 30% increases but more than a percent or 2.
