Disney World for 21 year olds?

A friend and i are trying to plan a trip for her 21st birthday. I have been to Disney too many times to count and she has been once. She wants to go to Vegas but I'm feeling Disney. Can anyone tell me what there is for people 21 in or around Disney?

omg i went for part of my 21st birthday extravaganza. jelly rolls and atlanic dance hall, there is drinking around the world but don't push your self and keep hydrated. i spread it out over a few days which helped. there is universal city walk which is really fun. overall have a lot of fun. do character meals! Also make sure you wear your button. Lastly be on the look out for special events :)

Drink around the world! If you went during Food & Wine (sorry, not sure when her birthday is!), there would be even MORE drinking options! Wine tasting in France is always there, and don't forget the tequila bar in Mexico! Although I agree to pace yourself and stay hydrated...it is a looonnnggg walk back to the bus from the countries, especially if you're feeling a bit 'overwhelmed'. ;)

Avoid any sort of champagne cocktail, a mistake I made on our Honeymoon. We were celebrating while waiting for our table at 50's Prime Time, and I ordered some sort of champagne concoction that was the size of my thumb and $15.

Vegas is great for a 21st birthday. I love WDW, but Vegas would be the play for me. There is a lot to do too besides drinking and gambling. Rent a car and drive to Hoover Dam. Flight over Grand Canyon. Water sports on Lake Mead. Shows, clubs, live music.
You can get great deals on hotel rooms in Vegas too. It may actually be cheaper than WDW. I know for me it's cheaper in the summer to fly to Vegas and stay than drive to Atlantic City which is only 90 minutes away since the rooms are so cheap.

Like others said, if you go to Vegas you could go to DL for a day or 2. I have done the drive several times from SCal to Vegas (5 to 6 hours). You get to see the worlds tallest thermometer and a whole lot of desert. Right at the border between CA and NV they are building the world's largest solar power plant, you can see it from the highway. Mirrors that stretch for miles across the desert. One of the times I did it I flew into SD and flew back from Vegas so you could do both DL and Vegas and only drive 1 way through the desert. Just drop your rental car off at the second airport. I think they charged a small fee.

Is everyone going over 21? If not both Vegas casinos and Disney are very strict about underage drinking.

If you do end up going to Disney there are some decent places in DTD with music and good drinking. PI was amazing, but sadly gone. EPCOT world showcase is great place to get your drink on. Off property, there is Church St area in Orlando with bars and stuff and Universal has City Walk.

Well we aren't renting a car and we live in upstate New York. So if we do Vegas we are going to do things in walking distance or by cab. Where Disney has transportation.

You don't need a car in Vegas. I've been to Vegas double digit times and have never once rented a car. We typically take a cab to and from the airport and then use the various forms of free and $ public transportation. Example- the bus is super cheap and reliable, there is a monorail system that covers the strip (buy a pass), and many of the hotels have free trams or buses that get you from hotel to hotel.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Disney; however, Vegas SCREAMS --- "I'M 21!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

If you really need a Disney fix tacked on to the trip- I agree w/trying to make your way to Anaheim for Disneyland.

On top of this...Vegas is hurting for $. Even decent lodging can be had for cheap. i.e. places like Caesar's, Mandalay, Belagio, etc. are offering rates that are in between staying at a Val or Mod on the cheap. Vegas is also usually a shorter trip...i.e. 2-3 nights is the norm, so you'd automatically save $ b/c of duration. Plus lots of places are courting guests with freebie buffets and other incentives.

It sounds like the bday girl is also pushing for Vegas, so maybe table WDW for a later trip together.

I am ONLY saying go to vegas because it's her 21st bday and thats where she wants to go. Otherwise I have absolutely no interest in going to Vegas ever again. I've been there 5x already and unless you are really into gambling it's a complete waste of $$. People complain about the prices of Disney? Please,Vegas is 2x that. Drinks cost close to 20$ each, there are rip off covers wherever you go. The nice restaurants are a complete rip off and so are the hotels (unless you stay at a crack house on the end of the strip). Vegas is trash unless you're a high roller. So before everyone starts slamming what I said, I've stayed at MGM and the Bellagio. I don't know what the other OP is talking about when they said they have good deals on the hotels there. I've actually seen quite the opposite.

I guess it all depends on when you go...but that's really no different to WDW. i.e. you go at Disney peak times, you're going to pay peak prices and see little to no discounts. I've helped my friend book 3 trips to Vegas this year and I got him rates under $140/nt at Bellagio, under $120/nt at Caesar's, and under $90/nt at Mandalay Bay. I had a coworker get awesome rates at Aria earlier this year just by timing it for a down week. Also, we watch the dates to see if any other discounts or incentives are offered and get them to tack it on to his trip. I can usually do Vegas for 1/3 of the price of Disney with proper timing and persistence over offers.

As for drink prices and covers...it's on par w/NYC, Miami, LA, etc. Not saying it's cheap especially if you don't get vouchers or supplement with free drinks on the casino floor, but it's certainly nothing out of the ordinary for a premier party destination.

True about when you go, but who wants to go to Vegas when its cold out and most of the pools are closed at the resorts for the winter?? Yes, thats what happened when we stayed at the Hard Rock in Nov. Also, I live in NYC and the drinks in Vegas are much more expensive than NYC! It's definitely not on par with NYC or Miami for that matter (I just got back from Miami).

Since it's her 21 st bday and thats where she wants to go my vote is to go, but thats the only reason. Also, if she's never been there before, she should go at least once just to see for herself. I'd much rather spend my day at IOA and hang out a CityWalk at night for my 21st bday. IMO

Actually- it's cheapest in the summer and between Thanksgiving and Christmas. I've paid $99 a nt for Caesar's in July, been bumped up for free from MGM to Bellagio in June, and gotten $125 at the Venetian in August. DH and I have talked about early December just b/c they are practically giving rooms away when people are thinking about buying holiday gifts.

As for drink prices, I guess it all comes down to what and where. I used to live outside of NYC and the drinks in the city were always a sticker shock. My brother and SIL sold their condo in South Beach a few yrs ago, but the drinks there were the highest I've ever seen. But it may just all come down to when we were there.
