Trip Report COMPLETED 30th Birthday at the Poly with autistic brothers in tow

Hello everyone again! I'm finally ready to start our trip report for June 20th-June 30th. My pre trip report can be found here.

Just a quick recap my name is Davita and this will be my DH's and my fourth trip to the World. DH is an orchestra teacher who did a mostly Disney concert and we Disney Bounded as Donald and Daisy Duck.
IMG_6894.JPG

This will be my brother's and my mother's second trip to Disney World but only the first time with us. So this is technically their first trip they do Disney World properly. My brothers are twins who are 22 and on the spectrum. Nathan is much more severe than Matthew, with bipolar disorder and OCD.

Nathan hasn't been on a plane since he was a little boy, pre 9/11, so we were worried about how he'd handle TSA. He doesn't like taking his shoes off in public, or people going though his backpack so you can understand our hesitation.

In preparation about a week before the trip we went over to their house to stage a fake TSA screening. At first, Nathan seemed super happy talking about the trip but once we asked him to take off his shoes and put his backpack through the "x-ray machine" he became very quiet and, I think, nervous. Matthew handled it very well, but spoiler alert, he didn't do so well on the actual day.

Fast forward a week and we met them at the airport bright and early at 5 am for our 7:15 flight. After we checked our bags, all 10 of them, oy, we went up to security. Luckily for us because we are rapid rewards members we automatically qualified for Pre-TSA, so all the work we did with practicing taking our shoes off was for naught. We decided early that I would take Nathan through and DH would help Matthew and my mom. Nathan did great! He seemed slightly agitated about his backpack having to go through the machine, out of his sight. After we went through the metal detectors, we turned around and no DH or family behind us. Apparently, Matthew didn't empty his pockets and they were trying to stuff things in backpacks because Pre-TSA didn't have readily available bins to put stuff in. Then right before Matthew went through he threw the rest of his stuff in the X-ray machine. When he got to the other side with us, we had to wait a while for a TSA agent to get everything out of the machine.

After that trauma was over we sat and had breakfast.
IMG_7045.JPG

Matthew is on the left and Nathan is on the right. If you can't tell, Nathan's favorite character is Goofy.

We then preboarded the plane and took some selfies.
IMG_7047.JPG

Something that we didn't know until this trip is that Southwest's policy on pre-boarding based on disability, is that one person per disabled individual can preboard with them. So DH couldn't preboard with us but Matthew saved him a seat.
IMG_7054.JPG

We flew to Houston first, where we were supposed to just stay on the plane to Orlando but were unexpectedly forced to changed planes. I was worried Nathan wouldn't do so well with that but he was fine with running to the next gate for Orlando. Everything was fine on our flight to Orlando. Then it was time to put on our Magic Bands!!
IMG_7061.JPG

After picking up the mountains of bags, we went to board the Magical Express.
IMG_7055.JPG

That's my mom right there, btw. More selfies!
IMG_7059.JPG

I still hate the new video very much. Nathan and Matthew couldn't have cared less about it and I think Matthew started playing his video games. But we got really lucky and the Polynesian was the very first stop! yay! We arrived, got our leis and checked in to our room which was in Aotearoa. Not the building I chose on online check in, but I was actually really happy with it. We did get our other requests for adjoining rooms and a balcony.

And our view had the monorail going by! That never got old.

Next, presents for everyone! Captain Cook's lunch and Downtown Disney

We are almost there! Last day, I can do this!

June 30th, Epcot Day

It was our last day. We spent the morning packing up and sending our luggage down to bell services. I was worried about this day with Nathan because we wouldn't be able to have an afternoon nap. So we slept in and I scheduled a sit down lunch so we could drag out the day a little. Magical Express was going to pick us up at 5 so we had to leave Epcot by 4.

Last monorail selfies?! Sobs

Spaceship Earth!
DSCN5868.jpg

We went straight to Test Track and used our Fastpasses for it. Then we got Nathan his favorite Mickey pretzel since he hadn't had one yet, and we were trying to use snack credits up.
DSCN5869.jpg

Matthew wanted to meet Chip and Dale one last time because he wanted them to sign his hat. So we waited in line for that one again and we let Matthew have a solo meet with them.

EPCOT_FUTURE_7371102318.jpeg

They turned Matthew's hat around so that they each were equal, was very funny.
DSCN5871.jpg

DSCN5870.jpg

I thought his hat came out super awesome.

We then rode Living with the Land. Everyone liked it, Nathan would repeat all the foods he saw that he eats.
DSCN5920.jpg

I'm very interested in the pepper apparently

No Epcot I don't wanna leave!

Next, lunch and quick walk around World Showcase

June 30th, continued.

After Living with the Land we stopped for this picture.
EPCOT_FWROVER_7371219729.jpeg

It was hot...

Then we started walking to Via Napoli for our lunch reservation. It never fails, every year I forget how far Italy is from Future World. It was a long, long walk and my mom kept asking if we were almost there, which DH and I would reply, no...

We made it to the air conditioned splendor, and we had to wait quite some time. Maybe 30 minutes? I can't remember. It was fine once we got Nathan a seat to wait in the lobby
DSCN5942.jpg

DSCN5952.jpg

IMG_7337.JPG

At this point we were out of dining credits. So I had decided Via Napoli would be good because we could get a couple of pizzas and it wouldn't be very expensive. We ordered a large pepperoni and a large cantaloupe pizza. The cantaloupe was actually the bigger hit, and Nathan loved the place.
DSCN5954.jpg

DSCN5955.jpg

I had to take a picture of Matthew eating the cantaloupe pizza for proof that it really happened.

We then walked to France and got some ice cream at the ice cream shop there. I got caramel and the lady warned me it wasn't really sweet, it was more bitter. They don't offer samples so I said screw it, I'll try it. I liked it a lot, it wasn't super sweet but it was really good.

Then we had to start walking back to the front of the park.
DSCN5960.jpg

Bye World Showcase!! I felt like we completely neglected you this trip! We'll make up for it next time.

Last selfies leaving Epcot...

Smiling on the outside, crying on the inside

Our last monorail this trip, the red monorail
DSCN5967.jpg

We went back to the Poly and waited outside for UNmagical express for about 20 minutes. We had time to get some drinks for the bus ride. We got to the airport and magical express only drops you off at one terminal now? And southwest is across the airport from it of course!

We checked in and went through TSA quickly then sat down and had McDonald's for dinner. There is nothing worse than eating McDonald's after a 10 day trip to Disney. :-(

When it was time to board we lined up for pre boarding and Matthew took this picture of him in Nathan's glasses
IMG_7339.jpg

And this is when the fun stopped.

The southwest employee told us that there was horrible weather in Houston and no planes were allowed to land. So we couldn't even board, we'd have to sit down and they would let us know. Now if they hadn't told us to line up for preboarding it would have been fine, but since Nathan saw the plane and saw us line up this is when he lost it. Nathan had been so good this entire trip but I think he was so exhausted and wanted to go home so badly he couldn't cope. We sat back down and he started stomping his feet and twitching and saying THE PLANE, THE PLANE. My mom asked him if he wanted to take an emergency pill to calm him down his doctor gave us before the trip and he said yes. My mom then told him to go with her to get a drink and he stood up and ran across the terminal. DH and my mom ran after him and I threw our luggage at poor Matthew and told him to watch everything.

When we finally caught up to him he had run across the terminal and was pounding on a wall and crying. We managed to get him off the wall and then he ran towards a window, propped himself up against it and started kicking the window softly. DH said I think he's not going to run again let me go get him his drink and he can take the pill here. We gave him his pill and he started to cry. Usually when he starts to cry that means the worst is over, so we were relieved and let him stand there.

This is when a Southwest employee came up to us. I was thinking that this was it, we were going to have to drive home and were going to be escorted out of the airport. He just asked us where we were going, and if he was going to be ok to fly. I told him that he was disabled and we just gave him something so he should be ok. He told us ok and walked away but I could see several employees watching us.

After about half an hour of standing at the window they announced we could board. We preboarded, and he sat down, covered himself with a blanket and passed out. For the entire flight he was quiet, I think his emergency pill hit him hard. When we finally landed in Houston everything was delayed by two hours at least so we sat there at the gate until we finally were allowed to take off. We got home in El Paso at around midnight. Oof!

Next, some final thoughts.

Yay! I finished it, now just some final thoughts

Polynesian Village Resort:
I absolutely loved this resort, it's by far my favorite of all the resorts we've stayed at. And now we own there! So it's always home for us. I loved the rooms, you don't think that the size is really that big of a deal until you are in such a large room. And monorail views can't be beat, well unless you have a Magic Kingdom view of course.

Garden Grocer:
I was really happy with this service, we've never ordered groceries at Disney before. We actually had to order another case of water and gatorade later in the trip. It's a little costly but just comparing how much all that water would have cost at Disney and it's worth it.

Disability Access Service:
I loved the new way this service works. With the Magic Band's and My Disney Experience it worked perfectly. And we didn't have to use it very much at all with the Fastpass+ system.

And here it is, our massive pin shopping spree this trip
IMG_7340.JPG

The limited editions this trip were the 4th of July one and the Pocahontas anniversary pin. I love them! And yes, we are insane and we know it when it comes to pins.

This is DH's Starbucks mugs collection
IMG_7341.JPG

We are going to Disneyland next month and he wants the mugs there to complete his collection

And finally my Elsa statue I got on my birthday
IMG_7417.JPG

And yes, she's standing next to my Minas Tirith on my shelf. We're weird, I know

So just a couple more thoughts about how the twins did this trip.

Matthew did wonderfully. I've never seen him open up like he did this trip. Mostly he stays in his own little world and doesn't like to interact. Here he was looking forward to meeting all the characters and he would talk about what he wanted to say to them. He even danced with Chip and Dale! He never dances. He also was trying every single new food we would offer him. He's a very picky eater so this was surprising. He was getting so good at navigating Disney World that we started asking him how we would get somewhere and how we would get back home and he learned it! I was so proud

Nathan did really well. I could tell he was struggling but I could also tell how much he was trying to stay happy. The difficult part is that my mother isn't the most positive person so her negativity would affect his mood. We had to keep reminding him how much fun we were having and he'd smile. I know he had fun because he loves looking at the pictures and talking about the trip and laughing.

The biggest thing I learned this trip is in regards to the flight. Next time that they go with us I am not going to schedule a flight so late in the day. I think around lunch time is good because then Magical Express will pick us up around nine and he can sleep a little before. Also, no parks that last day, that seemed to exhaust him. And now when we talk about flying my mom says that Nathan told her he never wants to fly again. And when I tell him how about when we come home we get on a plane around lunch time? And he says yes. Which shocks my mother that he agrees to fly again. You just have to be positive with him and give him an option that he understands and is ok with.

Also, going at a time of year that isn't so hot might be better for him. It really was hotter than I've even seen it in Florida for most of the trip so maybe a trip later in the year would be better.

Thanks so much for reading and I'm sorry how long this took me to finish!! Next trip is next month to Disneyland!!

I'm glad you're finding time to finish this up! THNX

Thanks for reading!
Awesome updates! That sounds like a perfect 30th birthday :) I hope you enjoyed every minute of it!
I loved every second! I want to turn 30 again!
Glad you're back with the TR! That cake looks AMAZING! I've never really thought I would want a custom cake at WDW but this might change my mind.
I would definitely recommend getting a custom cake! DH and I used the cake talk forum here to learn how the process works.
I'm so sorry to hear about the blisters.
Thanks, blisters are the WORST, but luckily they weren't that painful for very long.

Sooo, we bought DVC!
Welcome Home! We recently bought too, went resale with 160 AKL points. If you don't mind me asking, how many points did you purchase? I ask because soon after we made our purchase we decided we wanted/needed more! We're closing this week on 50 more AKL points that we hope will give us plenty going forward! At least my bank account hopes!!:D

Yay! Welcome home, too! I believe we bought around 220 points and Disney "gave" us a full year for 2015 even though it was June. So that gives us enough points to stay at Disney World for 10 days in a studio at the Poly and a long weekend at Disneyland a year if we always borrow from the next year. I hope that makes sense, it took me a while to understand it, lol.

Yes, I believe that is a great number of points for a young couple! It's why we added on to get us up to 210. Be sure to familiarize yourself with all the discounts and DVC events!

Thanks for the great trip report. It's always a good reminder to see happy, smiling faces at WDW. Over the years I've become somewhat cynical and skeptical about the parks, prices, quality etc.

Also thank you for sharing your brother's experiences. We have a 40 year old son who is quite similar on the spectrum. I thoroughly understood when you wrote about not being able to get the biometric finger scan to work. Long days and long lines can indeed tire him out, but it is still the only place where he will smile from day one until we leave the resort to go home.

Last July was our first experience with both the Magic Bands and the new DAC. The old system worked extremely well for our son, but it did have it's flaws. I felt he was able to do a few less things with the new system, but we did go in the heavy crowds of July.

The way you take care of your brothers and talk about them is heartwarming. They are lucky to have a sister like you. It reminds me of how our daughters take care of their brother in the parks and in his everyday life as well. Congratulations on a great vacation. You did pick up a lot of nice keepsakes.

thank you so much for your kind words. It made me tear up a little. In a good way, of course. Very few people understand what its like traveling with an adult on the spectrum, so I really wanted to write this report for everyone to read. Thanks so much for reading!

We just returned from a short 3 day stay at WDW (Late Saturday 11/21 - Noon Tuesday 11/24). The week before we were on a 7 day cruise aboard the new NCL Escape and I think our some smiled more in those 3 days than he did in the previous 7.

As usual, we had trouble with the biometrics at the entrance gates. Finally, at the Hollywood Studios gate they were able to arrange for my finger to be associated with his magic band which eliminated any future issues for the remainder of the stay.

We got back to the resort and everyone wanted to nap except me. The past couple days that I would nap I would wake up feeling much worse. I just wanted to rest.

At this point we hadn't been inside Magic Kingdom yet and it's my absolute favorite park. I wanted to ride the monorail around the resort loop just for fun, but nobody wanted to do that with me. So I took my refillable mug and went by myself. I've never done anything like this before and it was so much fun having a little solo excursion.

First I filled my mug and then went to the monorail platform where I was the only person there.

Isn't it pretty?
My ride is here
View attachment 102232
DH text me at this point asking me where I was, but he still didn't want to join me.
View attachment 102231
SO pretty! But those clouds look ominous...
View attachment 102230
Magic Kingdom! I was tempted just to get off the monorail and go inside.

When I was done with that, it was still early and I didn't want to go into the room because I knew I would fall asleep. First I did some pin shopping, then walked downstairs to Pineapple Lanai and had what would end up being my only Dole Whip of the trip.
View attachment 102229
I had to eat it fast it was melting super quick. Then I decided to go into the lobby and sit on one of the benches and call my dad. Very relaxing. Then it was time to start heading back so I took some selfies to document my progress back to the building.

When everyone was finally awake, we started walking towards the bus stop when the rain started. We went into Boutiki and got ponchos and umbrellas. Then we walked the super wet sidewalk to the bus stop.
View attachment 102225
It was still raining at Animal Kingdom when we arrived. It made the walk up to Tusker House uncomfortable. They also moved the check in area so DH and I had a hard time finding it.

When it was time to take our check in picture the rain had stopped enough for it. yay!

Next, Donald Duck's shenanigans.
How was the transportation to the non monorail parks? Did you take the monorail to EPCOT ? Great pictures and report!!!!!!!

We took the buses to AK and DHS and we got lucky that the Poly was the first pick up and GF after, so we always got a spot for Nathan to sit. Sometimes DH, my other brother and I would stand but we were ok with that as long as Nathan and my mom got a seat. Thanks so much for reading!

Sounds like a great little trip! Nathan never smiles as much as he does at Disney He's already talking about our next trip, he wants to go to Disneyland again, yay!
