The "coarsening of the culture" as someone twenty years ago called it (I can't remember who), seen on display.

So often we've been told that if you objected to that coarsening and lowering of standards, you weren't with it and weren't modern enough, or that the old standards of decorum and behavior no longer mattered. And yet, here we are in the exotically future year of 2023, and that coarsening really does seem to have made an impact on us as a society.

And it's an impact that is not for the better.



Then again, I'll admit, over the last 40+ years, I have seen various people do things in the park I wouldn't do in the privacy of my own house (let alone in public). It's just gotten worse and more frequent recently. So while I still buy into the "coarsening" argument, I think there is a behavioral acceptability threshold that now seems less strict.
