A Spirited Dirty Dozen ...

I actually wonder why the disproportionate disgust towards Alice? is is the whole Depp vs Amber issue?
I know extreme feminists are pushing for "boycott" Depp movies (and pretty sure that women are a big fanbase of Depp)

Nothing to do with Depp the first movie was just something different when it came out and was released at the right time. This was released in blockbuster season and this is not a blockbuster it needs to be around little competition.

Plus the entire weekend was way way down for the box office maybe people just were enjoying good weather in most of the country for a change over this holiday weekend as well. As X men did not hit expectations either.

Everyone can say "told ya so" now with Alice flopping, but Disney is on pace to break all yearly Box Office records EVER this year. Yeah, the studio relies too much on francises/brand name, but Disney isn't gonna give a crap about one failed film out of the bunch. They're already over $4 Billion worldwide only 5 months into the year.

I'd love to see better live action movies, some of Oscar quality, but the reality is Disney makes too much money doing what they're currently doing to change.
There's probably going to be two failed films in this year's bunch.

Nobody asked for a Pete's Dragon reboot, nobody seems to be hyped at all for a Pete's Dragon reboot, and nobody asked for Elliott to be redesigned as a giant green dog.

I'd like to hope that the failure of Alice and the inevitable failure of this thing might lead to a re-evaluation of the "Let's stripmine the animation library for live action remakes" strategy, but I doubt it.

One difference was Alice was opening against a very hyped up X-Men movie. Pete's Dragon opens against fairly weak competition in a Seth Rogan animated comedy that is geared to a completely different audience.

I'm not saying the movie will do great, but I think with proper marketing, the movie may end up doing better than Alice 2. What that number is though is TBD.

There's also Suicide Squad the week before and Kubo the week after.

Out of all the movies currently in discussion, the ONLY interesting one to me is Suicide Squad.

I completely forgot about Pete's Dragon.

I'm really getting sick of all animated movies being turned into live action, TBH. After the saccharine sweet of Cinderella, I've got a bad taste for them.

No part of me feels that way as well...it's just a lack of creativity and a desire to bank on the back of movies of the past while not caring about the original creator. The happy part of me just loves Mary Poppins....

Know that bit about how 'you can never go home again?'

Mary Poppins was the one Disney classic that was above all else. Its the one untouchable film...... and they're going to defile its legacy for a quick buck.

Yep. Half of the reason why I don't care for news of the movie. The other half is I'm tired of reboots (and sequels, many years after the fact....looking at you, Avatar)

Guys. It's a sequel. The original film will still be there. You can just tune out the sequel and forget it ever existed if it bothers you that much. I'm a huge fan of the movie and I feel like a sequel, if done right (and that's the key part here) can only enhance the experience of the original. Have an open mind, even though that's pretty much a foreign concept around here. ;)

They inevitably do it with every classic. Anyone remember Return to Oz? Or the sequel to Gone with the Wind? Nothing is sacred.
Return to Oz was more an adaptation of the second and third books with red slippers tacked on because the MGM movie has a chokehold on how society remembers the Land of Oz.
