THE CHALLENGE
resort-map4.jpg

Shanghai Disneyland Park, Disney's newest, is slated to open in 2016 after a 5-year period of construction. With elements of classic Disneyland as well as completely new attractions, the park will surely be a fresh addition to the worldwide Disney pantheon. At opening, the park will have six themed lands: Mickey Avenue, Gardens of Imagination, Fantasyland, Treasure Cove, Adventure Isle, and Tomorrowland. Shanghai Disneyland Park will also have the longest parade route of all Disney parks worldwide. A new daytime parade, Mickey's Storybook Express, will traverse this route every day.

However, there is one thing that the park is noticeably lacking, and it's your job to fix it. As members of the Final Four, your task is to create a nighttime parade for Shanghai Disneyland Park. Please include at least 5 pictures and be descriptive.

Due date is December 14, 2015 at 11:59 PM E.T.

Your guest judge for this round is @Nemo14

Daft Punk Presents...
TRON: Off The Grid

In trying to come up with a concept for this challenge, the frustrating part was tryign to think of something that would top or be equal to the Electrical Parade...what I consider to be the crown jewel of the night time parade genre.

After doing a bit of research I discovered that a TRON Light Cycle attraction is going to be a centerpiece of Shangahai Disneyland's Tomorrowland. With that in mind I had one thought and one thought only...I need to bring Daft Punk into this!

With that I proudly present to you my concept for an all new Night Time Parade/Dance Party/Sensory Overload Spectacular which combines dazzling lighting and laser effects, the latest projection mapping technology, complex multi level sets, Cirque style acrobatics, pyrotechnics, fireworks, and a thumping Daft Punk soundtrack giving energy and life to the concept of the world of "The Grid" escaping over to our world.

This concept was inspiring by the ending of TRON Legacy...Something the actual film never really lived up to. Throughout the film the big threat on the horizon is the potential for villain CLU to reach the real world and thus bring "The Grid" to us.

This would have made for an amazing finale, and in the actual film CLU gets destroyed right before he reaches his goal. So that got me thinking...What if a corrupt CPU succeeded in bringing the Grid to the real world. And what if that was the setting for a Nighttime Parade Spectacular unlike no other.

General set up and logistics

There will be eleven set pieces throughout the parade which will last around 25 minutes in run time. Each set will be centered around one large float but will also contain a large amount of street performers and special effects such as projection mapping and pyrotechnics...All timed to the music and featuring vivid TRON imagery of course!

An example of how the parade will affect a particular area is that Space Mountain will be completely decked out in Daft Punk and TRON themed projection effects!

The route winds its way through Fantasyland, across Tomorrowland, and down Main Street, leaving through a hidden corridor next to a clever nod to the film on Main Street, "Flynn's Penny Arcade".

Overture

The show builds slowly with this track from the TRON Legacy soundtrack. We see the area around us slowly transformed from its usual form until digital projections of the TRON city scapes start to surround us as the music grows louder and louder.

One More Time/Aerodynamic

The track used here will be the single one taken from "Alive 2007", a live album which blended a plethora of Daft Punk's greatest hits. It doesn't get much bigger than these two juggernauts squeezed together.

The ringing of the bell at the start of the track followed by the audience cheering is the perfect way to single the start of the main event. The Grid has risen, the Magic Kingdom has been overtaken, and a crazy party is about to begin.

As "One More Time" plays we see images of the grid projected onto all the buildings from Fantasyland to Main Street. At the center of the parade route is a replica of the giant pyramid used in the band's Alive 2007 tour. Costumed performers in the iconic Daft Punk masks will be atop the pyramid engaging the crowd and acting as the evening's Masters of Ceremony.

daft-punk-harder-better-faster-stronger.jpg

When the guitars kick in and the track transitions to Aerodynamics, a barrage of lasers shoot out into the sky in sync with the music. The lasers are blue, green, purple, and red. CLU's army attacks the Pyramid and TRON fights them off, singling the end of the song at the fight to keep control of this newly unleashed Grid.

The Grid

The stage is set with this memorable selection from the TRON legacy score. An aged Kevin Flynn sits atop a digital perch and preaches about his experiences discovering the Grid for the first time as images of the TRON universe flash all around us. Kevin is certainly the focal point of this section of the parade.

Kevin-Flynn-tron-legacy-18220660-549-311.jpg

Around the (Disney) World

This is one of Daft Punk's most iconic songs and needed to be worked in. With that being said it will lean a bit on the shorter scene as the song itself does get repetitive. Light Cycles will be projected throughout the surrounding areas, racing and battling each other in time to the music. The main float of this section will be a giant vertical board where we see an arcade style visualization of a Light Cycle race in progress.

latest

Crescendolls

This section of the show shoots off like a circus canon. There is a massive stage with a glitzy and futuristic blue skinned alien band performing and making their way through the stage route. Many adoring "fans" follow in an almost BeatleMania fashion. In time with the music will be a big chorus of "Whoooooooooooos!"

the_crescendolls_by_shira_chan.jpg

It's a super energetic scene, but at the same time there's a slightly dark bit of comedy behind the excessive commercialism. Within the context of the show's story this hints that while the Grid coming up to the main land might be an exciting party for now there is a bit of a cynical nature behind all the flashiness.

The Game Has Changed

Suddenly the tone of the parade changes as a giant projection of CLU fills the area. He taunts us about how the power of the Grid is so much more than just games and fun. With that this dramatic track from the TRON soundtrack kicks in.

A legion of CLU's commanding officers come marching along the parade route drumming in beat with the music. An actor playing CLU can be seen perched on an intimidating stage that floats by as he commands his presence.

TRON%20LEGACY_2_jpg.jpg

At the height of the darkness, arguably Daft Punk's most popular song ever kicks into high gear in a very special way. A realistic projected version of Pharrell Williams appears along with Daft Punk in another Pyramid like float, this time with more color.

Their arrival is there to signify that they will fight for the the Grid and the power that it can have for the good of mankind. To a rockin' soundtrack! Throughout this section Pharrell and Daft Punk taunt Clu and his minions as they get attacked by an unseen force.

Pharrell-middle-Daft-Punk-sandwich.jpg

Derezzed

The conflict reaches a boiling point as TRON finally reveals himself in this climatic moment. CLU turns into a giant (an impressive blend of puppetry and projections) and the two fight as Pharrell and Daft Punk continue to rock out.

The main "float" of this section will be the giant "CLU" figure himself, being fought by a completely projected image of TRON.

tron-3-what-if-clu-wasn-t-actually-100-destroyed-tron-3-349363.jpg

Doin' It Right

Panda-Bear.jpg

This will be the lightest and most colorful part of the performance and a great start to the show's true finale. Bubble machines will be pumping out from all directions, surrounding the audience in an almost underwater style atmosphere.

All different hues of blue...still in the TRON style, will be projected onto all the buildings. The main float of this section will be an electronic, "Steampunk" style giant palm tree which contains an ambitious projection effect.

Hanging on one of the branches of the tree will be a swing in full motion. Projected onto that swing will be an image of Noah Lennox AKA Panda Bear from Animal Collective...the voice you hear collaborating with Daft Punk on this track.

animal-collective.jpg

This will be a very precise projection to pull off, realistically making Panda Bear appear to be swinging from the swing and singing along to the chorus at the same time. If pulled off corrected it could push the show into a whole new realm of surreal.

The projected Pharrell also joins in for a mash up, where Pharrell is singing "were up all night to get lucky! were up all night to get lucky!" and Panda Bear from across the way sings back "If you do it right/Let it go all night/Shadows on your break/out into the light". This will sure to be a highlight of the parade.

tumblr_l1tz21cZg31qa4xf3o1_1280.jpg

Superheroes

And finally we come to the grand finale of the parade...with a twist. Just when we thought we'd finally conquered the Grid, out pops a MASSIVE projection of the film's original antagonist...The Master Control Program...

hqdefault.jpg

This launches us into an all out assault of sensory effects...From pyrotechnics to lasers, to incredible projection mapping done in perfect time to the music. All while TRON and the ultimate evil of The Grid face off.

The thumping climatic track of Daft Punk's iconic "Discovery" album make this the ultimate send off to the parade. Even giant projected images of the band are seen applauding as the finale's crescendo falls upon the park.

ae1.gif

Finally, when all winds down and the MCP is defeated, we see that the projection mapping effects of the surrounding areas remain as the music winds down from a quiet instrumental piece from the Legacy score to close things out. The projection mapping stays in the area for the rest of the park's operating hours to preserve a sense of continuity to the experience.

And that concludes my pitch for Daft Punk's "Off The Grid" Night Time Parade Spectacular. It's a dash of Daft Punk, a mix of TRON, and a whole lot of magic rolled up into a truly unforgettable and unique experience.

Fantalusion is a new nighttime parade debuting at Disneyland Shanghai on opening night. Fantalusion is a combination of the words Fantastic and Illusion so it's a fantastic illusion. Fantalusion will consist of 9 units. The soundtrack for the parade will incorporate many beloved songs from beloved Disney classics. Here are some quick facts on the new parade. There are 16 main floats, 25 drones, 134 performers, and an estimated time of 20 - 35 minutes due to the scope of the actual parade. Now lets dim the lights, and let the music pour into the streets as the floats get ready to go down the parade route.

Technology -

In this new parade Disney will use technology never used before in any Disney parade, and it will also improve on older systems used in past parades. All the floats will be incorporate LED lights and fiber optics. Fiber Optics will also be used in all the costumes in this parade. For the sound of the parade relays will be built into the floats to tell the speakers throughout the park what music to play. Drones for the first time will be used in a Disney park by Disney for a parade. Five drones will be flying and controlling Dumbo. These drones will be black, and will make the least amount of noise as possible as they fly. The drones will be connected to Dumbo by clear strong wires. Three small drones will control his two ears and his trunk, and two larger drones will fly his body. Twenty more small drones will be used in the Princess Promenade Unit to have lanterns float along the unit as Rapunzel and Flynn's float goes down the route. These drones will be hidden inside the lanterns, and will be as quiet as the ones used for Dumbo. The next thing is the use of automated whirlies which formally used drivers. The automated whirlies will use LPS and sensors to know where they are, and what to do. The units using this are Pooh's Hero Celebration for the Honey Pots, and Alice's UnBirthday Party for the Tea Cups.

Celebrate the Stars - A Journey 'Round the World
bba0f6b8911d40588a2758e1e2973b11.jpg

Disney Parks are known for their stellar entertainment. Whether that be a dazzling fireworks show, a mystifying fountain performance, a fast-paced stage show or an exciting parade, guests of the 12 Disney theme parks around the globe can view a variety of entertainment that keeps every visit fresh, new and exciting.

Year after year, Walt Disney Imagineering teams push the standards and boundaries of theme park entertainment, creating awe-inspiring shows for everyone to enjoy. For Disney’s newest resort, Shanghai Disney Resort, Walt Disney Imagineering’s entertainment team (led by Steve Davison) will create all new shows and entertainment that will round off the perfect day for tourists and locals alike.

There are 3 main pieces to this entertainment puzzle. Mickey’s Storybook Express, the daytime parade, lets guests be a part of a one of a kind locomotive featuring their favorites Disney characters. Disney’s Imagination Skies: A Nighttime Spectacular, uses projection technology, fountains, fireworks and special pyro effects to tell the story of three kids going on an adventure through Disney stories!

Finally, we have Celebrate the Stars - A Journey ‘Round The World. Due to Shanghai Disneyland’s other entertainment putting major emphasis on Disney characters and stories, Imagineers wanted to take Shanghai Disneyland nighttime parade in a completely different direction. Taking guests on a journey around the world, Celebrate the Stars - A Journey ‘Round the World will tell the stories of how different places throughout our planet celebrate the nighttime. Using cultural dancers, environments and effects, guests will see celebrations from America, China, Japan, Brazil, Norway, Australia, India and France!

This parade will be unlike anything else that Walt Disney Imagineering has embarked on. Celebrate the Stars - A Journey ‘Round the World will a true cultural experience, while giving the high quality of entertainment that everyone knows and loves Disney for.

Units:
Each region or country will receive its own unit in the parade.

A Journey 'Round the World:
Leading the procession that is Celebrate the Stars - A Journey ‘Round the World is a massive globe that is lit up by LED lights. Similar to the globe found in Illuminations: Reflections of Earth, guests will find the title of the parade circling the globe similar to the famous Universal logo. This unit is vital to the setting of the stage for this parade, as the grandeur of the scale and scope of the globe creates a dazzling opening act for Celebrate the Stars - A Journey ‘Round the World. This float will also spin as smoke, haze and mist creates a floating effect.

Behind this globe, 2 people representing each country will walk beside a moving flag that glows with that country's respective flag.

The American Dream:
This dazzling unit for Celebrate the Stars - A Journey ‘Round the World transports guests into the heart of the American dream. Inspired by the Main Street Electrical Parade’s finale float, America the Beautiful will use LED lights to transport guests to the middle of a July 4th barbeque!
0604bz_4820gd48353455.jpg

Brazil the Beautiful:
The next unit for this new parade is Brazil the Beautiful. Inspired by the nightlife of Rio de Janeiro, guests will find this lush float making its way through Gardens of Imagination and Tomorrowland. This float will make use of gradual elevations, all escalating to a replica of Christ the Redeemer, perched high on a hill. Dancing on and beside the float will be traditional Brazillian dancers, dancing a variety of styles including the samba and others! Also, Cirque du Soleil style acrobatics will lead and follow the float.
brazil_Rio-de+-janeiro_travel_+2.jpg

France the Fantastic:
Following the Brazil unit is France the Fantastic. Celebrating the rich culture and history of France, this unit’s main float will be inspired by this beautiful country’s capital Paris and will feature replicas of the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe, lit up by LED lights. In addition, beautiful displays of glowing flowers will grace the Paris float. Also, alongside the float will be pairs of ballroom dancers, reflecting the country’s grace and beauty.
large.jpg

Norway the Noble:
After France comes Norway. Transporting guests into the majestic fjords of this northern European country, the glowing mountain side will be covered in a layer of fluorescent snow. In addition, the aurora borealis will glow above by the means of an overhead structure (think the Little Mermaid’s overhead lights in Disneyland’s Paint the Night). Beside the float, traditional Norwegian dancers will accompany the unit.
aurora-borealis-nature-hd-wallpaper-1920x1200-10227.jpg

India the Irreplaceable:
Up next, we have India. This float, overflowing with India’s rich culture, takes guests into the gardens in front of the Taj Mahal. In India's main float, the gardens of the Taj Mahal, complete with illuminated dancing water. At the end of the float, guests can see an LED Taj Mahal, synchronized to the parade’s music. Dancing alongside the float will be traditional Indian and Hindu dancers.
image006.jpg

Japan the Joyful:
Japan follows India as another 2-float unit for Celebrate the Stars: A Journey ‘Round the World. The first float, a beautiful Japanese garden, complete with traditional Japanese buildings and landscaping. This is is float all lit in spectacular LED lights, giving this float an awe-inspiring look. Beside this float will be traditional Japanese dancers. Tokyo’s massive screens and buildings that tower over citizens inspire the second float in the Japan unit. Depicting changing references to pop-culture in Japan, these screens will provide a unique look to this already exciting float. Alongside the second part of the Japan unit will be electronic dancers, inspired by Paint the Night’s Cars Unit dancers.
japanese-garden-at-night.jpg
original.jpg

Australia the Amazing:
After Japan comes Australia, the next unit in Celebrate the Stars - A Journey ‘Round the World. Transporting guests into the famous city of Sydney, they’ll see an LED lit Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbor Bridge. This unit will be the smallest of the entire parade, but its size doesn’t change the fact that Australia will make its way through Tomorrowland and Gardens of Imagination just like every other unit.
Sydney_Harbour_pano_at_night.jpg

China the Charming:
The grand finale to this all-new nighttime parade is China. Inspired by China’s Chinese New Year festivities, Chinese and foreign visitors alike will be treated to a one of a kind unit that glows and radiates the beautiful Chinese culture. Dragons and Lanterns fly above the float, as Chinese dancers can be seen dancing traditional Chinese dance.
Ke_Lok_Si_Illuminations_01.JPG

Soundtrack
Accompanying this spectacular new parade will be a spectacular new soundtrack. As fans of the Disney parks know, Disney uses music and sound to help tell the story, relaying moods, tones and emotions to the audience. That is exactly what Walt Disney Imagineers want to convey with this project.

For Celebrate the Stars - A Journey ‘Round the World, Imagineers wanted to create a soundtrack that was grand in scale, but also big in heart and culture. In order to do this, a new theme was written, called the One World, One Universe. Using a grand orchestra and band theme similar to Disney’s SpectroMagic Soundtrack in sound and scale, guests will find that the instruments and pace change as the parade continues, to match that of the unit passing by. A calmer, more serence and slower version of the theme may play for the France unit, while an electronic beat plays for the second half of the Japan unit.

Also, One World, One Universe will be recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra. LSO is also the orchestra behind Star Wars.

Technology
For Celebrate the Stars - A Journey ‘Round the World, Walt Disney Imagineering decided to step up their game in the technology department. For this all-new nighttime parade, more than 1.5 million LED lights will be used. These lights can be found along the parade route, on the floats or even on the costumes of the 80 performers found in the parade. In addition, various smoke, fire, haze, water and mist effects will be used throughout the parade. In addition, screens will be used in various places throughout the parade, such as on the second float of the Japan unit.

All of these lights, effects and screens will be synchronized to the One World, One Universe soundtrack, giving guests a truly immersive experience in various cultures from around the world.

Performers
In order to create an authentic feel for this parade, performers will be hired from their native countries to perform in their respective unit. This will work similarly to Epcot's World Showcase, where international performers will be used to make the experience feel real. Of course, the exception is China, as performers for the big finale unit themed to China will be hired locally. There

Costumes
A large part of Disney's parades are the stellar costumes that add a whole new layer to the fabric of the show. (See what I did there? :p;)). For Celebrate the Stars - A Journey 'Round the World, the 80 performers will wear costumes that traditionally come from the country of that unit. Of course, these costumes will be modified with LED and fiberoptic lights to dance and light up with the music.

Elite Eight - Round II
IDInstitute's Submission

Coming later next year (that is, if it ever opens ;)) will be a one of a kind in terms of Disney parks. While it may have a similar style, Shanghai Disneyland will not just be your average MK/DL parks. It is slated to feature extremely innovative, first of their type, and game changing attractions. Once it opens, it will be a must visit for any Disney (or theme park in general) fanatic.

With this in mind, I feel like this park needs something really spectacular for a nighttime parade. In order to really give closure to an amazing day of excitement and adventure, this nighttime parade really has to encapsulate what this park is supposed to represent. And following this goal, I have worked hard to create a concept that can really fit. Presenting... Shanghai Disneyland Electrical Parade!

With Shanghai Disneyland being the cross between classic Disneyland and a new, innovative future, I decided to bring this park a 21st Century version of this fantastic and nostalgic parade. As the successor to the original Main Street version, the Tokyo version (Dreamlgihts), and even Paint the Night, it will have amazing effects set to a classic soundtrack, extravagant floats of your favorite childhood attractions. This new Electrical Parade is the perfect way to complete Shanghai Disneyland.
The parade will follow the same route as the current (and still unknown) daytime parade, set to go through Gardens of Imagination (center "hub" area).
5dt1z7.png

(Because this route is unknown, follow the blue dots with the start being towards the bottom side for a visual for now :))

And now, without further adieu, I invite you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

The artfully decorated light posts around Gardens of Imagination suddenly go from dim to completely dark. The anticipation built up over the past hour or so of guests waiting at the seats they saved with an amazing view have all built up to this moment. They can hear the music begin to play, as well as the announcer introducing the show:

"Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls! Shanghai Disneyland proudly presents our spectacular festival pageant of nighttime magic and imagination. In thousands of sparkling lights, and electro-synthe-magnetic musical sounds: The Shanghai Disneyland Electrical Parade!"

There are a grand total of 15 floats/units. The way they are presented is divided into 3 different sections, being Classic Animation, Pixar, and Park-Based. However, first is the introductory float. Guests will see this one round the corner first. Playing homage to the first float in the original parade, Mickey and Gang will ride in on an electrical train. However, this new version will have a new design, with a cross between the original and a much more futuristic draft of the train. It will have OLED lighting layered around the outside, with the name of the parade fading in and out in fiber optics.
Main-Street-Electrical-Parade-Train.jpg
923475196d303e6ccca57d40cc4816a1.jpg

Following this first float begins the section on the classic movies. As the first Disney animated film, it only makes sense for Snow White to be the first float theme! This float has a cottage on it, much like the one in the film and later recreated at the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, however of course with an electrical parade spin on it. The entire cottage will be lit up with the many, famous little LED lights. The most interesting part of this scene however is when you look through the windows when it comes by, and you can see NextGen electronic holographs of Snow White and the dwarfs dancing inside.
35dd2f7f4a8454b1895882a216503f3c.jpg

Up next is Peter Pan. This unit will be introduced by many little dancers wearing Tinker Bell-esque costumes, with fiber optic-infused wings. However, the real Tinker Bell is flying over the float set, a wonderfully lit up recreation of London at night, with Big Ben towering towards the back. Tinker Bell will be created through the use of a small drone with fiber optic lights on it to make the image of the character. Meanwhile, the Peter Pan character will be on the ground, dancing a bit, and running around to high-five and be interactive with the guests watching.

After the Peter Pan scene, a new Lion King float moves in. It will be a completely electric version of Pride Rock (again, in a similar style to the original parade floats/the Snow White float with many LED lights lining it). What makes this scene incredibly impressive and fascinating to watch ride by is the sheer scope of the Pride Rock- it is a whopping 21 feet (for reference, that's almost 2 yards taller than the tallest MSEP float, Pete's Dragon, at 16 feet). In addition, another neat feature of this scene is the usage of NextGen animatronics in Simba, Nala, Pumba, Timon, and other animals, as well as a Zazu drone!

image.jpeg

As the Lion King floats turns the corner, you see a new float rolling in- themed to Aladdin. The general layout of this float will be Aladdin, Jasmine and Genie actors/animatronic standing on the LED covered balcony of the Sultan's Palace, reminiscent of the final scene of the movie:
latest

The coolest feature of this scene is the use of drones. However, it will be different that Zazu and Tinkerbell. This time, 4 different drones will each be attached to a corner of the magic carpet (with fiber optic cloth), and it will fly around over the float and guests in very cool fluid motion.

The sixth unit is modeled after Pinocchio. The float will be themed much like the original Pinocchio float in the first edition of the MSEP, with the Pinocchio character standing in front of the whale:
2006-06-18-2316-31_edited.jpg

However, it will be updated significantly to match the higher quality of electrical effects, with new /more lights with different colors/sizes. The main aspect this unit will focus on though will be the dancing. Over 20 live dancers with lit-up Pinocchio-styled costumes will dance around in the famous puppet dance!
PinocchioDancing.gif

The final unit themed to Classic Disney Animation will be the Little Mermaid. In this scene, Arial will be sitting in her clam (much like seen in the theater show at DHS), with many LED drone fish swimming around in the air to create the illusion that the guests are suddenly underwater. To add to this effect, all plant life will actually be animatronics, swaying in the "sea movement".
vaikese%20merineitsi%20rannakarp.jpg

(Imagine this area with the different colored sand the float, except with more lights of course! ;))

Once the Classic Animation segment ends, it will move on to floats themed after Pixar franchises. The first one to be featured will be Toy Story. However, there won't really be any one general float to this unit. Instead, your favorite and most memorable toy characters, including Woody, Buzz, Jesse, Rex, and many more, will be dancing around and celebrating in lit up clothes. There will be some LED float-like vehicles zooming around though, themed after the less "walkable" toys, such as RC Racer and Slinky. These units will be similar to the "whirly" units that are famous from the original show:
Main-Street-Electrical-Parade_Full_10977.jpg

image.jpeg

The next scene is Monsters, Inc. The float itself will be modeled after the scare floor. A Sully costume character and NextGen Mike animatronic will be on the float, waving to guests, as the doors around them (three on each side of the float) raise up and down. The doors will actually be screens that occasionally produce a really cool effect. They will often open and close. Usually the doors will open and there will be nothing there, but if your'e lucky you can get a glimpse into the human world with Monsters in different rooms. Using screens and holographs, it will appear as if there is no ending to it for a few seconds until it closes before you get a new point of view ;) It's one of the coolest effects yet in this parade!
tumblr_lnmu8mEMkg1qgawc8o1_500.gif

Following the Monsters Inc unit will be A Bug's Life. This unit will feature a very technological "circle of life" effect. Part of the set of this float will feature fiber optic plant life technology currently being developed for DAK's Pandora. While many characters such as Flik, Atta and Dot dance around on the float in their fiber optic costume, in the back a tiny, NextGen animatronic plant will grow from a tiny sprout to a full plant, maintaining LED lights along it the whole time, making the whole expanding of the plant that much more mystifying and amazing.

The next float will be modeled after Finding Nemo. The main float will have a giant, "under sea", swaying aneneme...anemeneny...anenehmeh....what's it called...Oh yeah, anemone! :p This giant fiber optic animatronic anemone will constantly have a glowing Marlin animatronic cautiously looking out of it. Meanwhile, down on the ground will be Nemo and many other fish friends dancing and swimming around. The way this will be pulled off will be with dancers similar to Finding Nemo: The Musical, except this time the puppets will be lit up with fiber optic cloth, because, ya' know, it's the electrical parade! :D Meanwhile, silly Marlin audio can be heard calling out for Nemo to be safe out there.
Finding+Nemo-00:01:52.jpg

2920216067_ea92342d17_b.jpg

The final Pixar float will be themed after one of Pixar's newest films, Inside Out. The float will feature OLED glowing NextGen animatronics, all on a float themed to the Headquarters. Many unique glowing/holographic and lighting effects will be played with to get the effect of the memory orbs shining at night on the parade, much like how they did in the film.
InsideOutBar6401.jpg

The last three floats are themed to specific areas of the park. The first one will be inspired by Adventure Isle/Treasure Cove. It will be one of the largest floats in any Disney Parade length wise, with it having two sides to it. On the front half will be a prehistoric-ish jungle, with the return of the Avatar glowing plant life, as well as grand LED rockwork and a river and waterfall with glowing blue water. On the back side of the float, however, will be the side that has become overcome by pirates! Several pirate animatronics will be laughing and yo ho-ing, all over obtaining their literally shining loot of gold and coins!

The second park based unit (14th overall) will be themed mainly to Tron. The reason I chose Tron to have it's own float is not because of its movie relevance, but how it fits into the park. It is a huge part of Tomorrowland, and that will be represented here in the parade with the same type of electric atmosphere. Like Toy Story, this unit will not feature a central float, but rather many dancers wearing electric and lighted clothing (Tron-like), and a few small "whirly" floats, in the form of Light cycles.
LS_3.png

lightcycle1.png

The final float is a grand celebration. Mickey and the rest of the Fab Five have returned, wearing their electric clothing, standing in a sophisticated garden under a fiber optic recreation of the castle. For this grand finale, many electric lasers will shoot up into the sky in many different colors. In addition, for the first time ever in a parade, the viewing area around will will become part of the show, as the entire Gardens of Imagination land itself starts to glow and take part in this festival pageant of nighttime magic and imagination!
As the Baroque Hoedown music starts to come to an end, the lights simmer down, and you are thanked for joining the park in the grand spectacle!

Parade Stats:
Start time: 10:00 PM
Duration: 14 Minutes
Budget: 250 US million (excluding performers' salary)
Number of performers: 70

All in all, this new Shanghai Disneyland Electrical Parade will be a nighttime event unlike any other you've ever seen. As the successor to the previous renditions, it will feature first of its kind usage of new technologies to celebrate all the park has to offer and some of the greatest nostalgic memories of any Disney fan's childhood. Thank you for reading my submission, and I hope you enjoyed the show! :) :D

Hi there!

OK - before I get to the actual critiques, I just want to say I've been a huge fan of the imagineering contests here for a long time, so it's quite a thrill for me, a not-so-little old retired math teacher, to be judging any of you. The talent and creativity here is second to none, and I'm humbled at the thought of reviewing and rating your work. You're all champions in my book, and your submissions tonight only make me admire you all the more.

So on with the critiques!

1.) RMichael21 vs. The OriginalTiki

It always fascinates me how each of you can approach a challenge so differently and still come up with amazing results.

Tiki's project really blew me away the first time I read it. Basing it all on Tron (but not just rehashing Tron) with the Daft Punk soundtrack was really imaginative and certainly different than any parade ever done in a Disney park. I loved the intro and how it built into the ultimate conflict and its resolution. I honestly didn't care for (or perhaps understand?) the whole Pharrell part of this, and the song Get Lucky isn't appropriate for a family theme park, so I think I would have eliminated that. But other than that, most of the music was terrific and really fit his whole theme.

RMichael21 took a different approach with his Celebrate the Stars submission. He describes a parade showcasing countries around the world while highlighting famous landmarks and cultural aspects of each country. While I loved the idea of basically a moving and glowing World Showcase, I would have liked to see more detail to some of his descriptions.

My biggest dilemma in determining a winner here was when I considered the audience for each of these. Not everyone was a fan of Tron or Daft Punk, so that could be problematic, whereas the appeal of travel around the world appeals to a wider spectrum. But to fairly base my judgement here on imagineering, I have to choose Tiki.

2.) IDinstitute vs. tcool123

These 2 projects had so many similarities and both really captured the essence of a traditional Disney parade but updated with new technology. I loved the creative use of drones in both projects!

IDinstitute chose to use the familiar Baroque Hoedown as a nostalgic soundtrack for a lively parade that features 3 divisions - Classic Animation, Pixar, and Par-Based. Drones are used for Tinkerbell, Zazu, the fish in an under-the-sea effect, and cleverly to quietly fly a magic carpet over the Aladdin float in the Classic Animation division. Good use of NextGen animatronics add to the atmosphere. In the Pixar section, fiber optics, NextGen animatronics and glowing holographs enhance floats for Monsters Inc, Bugs Life, Finding Nemo (points to username), and Inside Out, while Toy Story characters in various forms dance about. The Park-Based unit features tributes to Adventure Isle/Treasure Cove, Tomorrowland, and the Fab five using fiber optics, animatronics, lasers and and a surprise ending. The presentation was well thought-out, and in Disney tradition, has something for everyone.

tcool123's Fantalusion also makes great use of drones in his nightime parade which gets its name from the fusion of Fantasy and Illusion. Dumbo will fly and move his ears and trunk with a little help from drones and well concealed wires, and lanterns will magically float in the sky for Rapunzel and Flynn with the clever use of small drones. Automated whirlies will use LPS and sensors to guide Pooh's Honey Pots and Alice's tea cups during this updated parade while LED lights and fiber optics will be used to light up costumes for the 134 performers and 16floats.

I loved that the opening welcoming float was a pagoda featuring the characters from Mulan, and also a color-changing dragon. Also each float features music relevant to the movie it highlights. Classic scenes from a number of Disney cartoons are featured, and there are even recycled animals from the Jammin' Jungle Parade.

It was very difficult to choose between these 2 since I really loved them both, and they were both very well explained. But I have to go with tcool123's simply because I liked his introductory float.

Thanks so much for allowing me to judge these challenges. It was quite interesting, and I really enjoyed reading these. You guys rock!

FINAL ROUND
@TheOriginalTiki vs. @tcool123

Congratulations for making it past the first two rounds. But you're certainly not done yet. You're now up against the best of the best. Time to prove yourself... for better or for worse. It's that time of year again!

THE CHALLENGE
Ladies and gentlemen, the final ICS challenge of 2015!

trailer-for-documentary-about-walt-disney-imagineering-video.jpg

The Imagineering forum is a celebration of creativity. Each day, new and original ideas are posted, and members collaborate to achieve the end goal of improving theme parks over the world. The ideas on this forum rival some of Disney's own. Between the 4 competitions that led up to the Elite Eight tournament-- The Sole Imagineer, The Creator Games, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, and The Choice-- our two finalists have contributed some of the most amazing content in this past year.

While they work well on a team, both @TheOriginalTiki and @tcool have also submitted several individual projects to these ICS competitions. Your assignment is to choose an individual project that your competitor created in an ICS competition in the past year. First, write a review of that project, similar to what a judge would write, offering constructive criticism. Next, you have two options:

1) "Plus" the original project. Though you both have great ideas, there is always room for improvement! Make sure to go above and beyond.
2) Redesign the project from the ground up, but use the same general concept that your competitor did originally.

Due date is December 29, 2015 at 11:59 PM E.T.

Your guest judge for this round is @MonorailRed

TheOriginalTiki's Final Elite Eight Project
Wicked: A Spell-binding Journey at Universal Studios Florida
Inspired by @tcool123's "Journey Through Oz" (The Sole Imagineer Episode Seven Reward Challenge)

For my final Elite Eight project I decided to do a walk through attraction using the basic idea Tcool presented of something themed to Oz in Universal Studios. I changed up the IP to "Wicked" instead of the generic Oz theme in the original project, partly because it's a far more popular and relevant name and mostly because Universal owns the film rights to the musical.

In the spirit of celebrating our best achievements of the year, my personal favorite project that I completed on my own was the African Queen attraction that was part of my Bogart Alley concept for Disney Hollywood Studios. That attraction was a literal "adventure in film making" as I created the storyline of being part of the movie shoot on the actual Africa locations and the perils that go along with that, mixed in with some of the iconic scenes from the film. For this project I wanted to do something similar except with the world of theater instead of film making, something that comes with its own set of unique challenges but has always been infused with a Hollywood style sense of chaotic whimsy (which was captured brilliantly in the 2014 Best Picture winner "Birdman" )

I was also inspired by a video that was just posted on the "Live Fast Die Poor" Youtube channel about the "Alice's Curious Labyrinth" attraction at Disneyland Paris. In the video the host takes us through this sprawling maze of a walk through and compliments the experience by saying it's way better than a dark ride because by the time you've made it to the top of the Queen of Hearts' castle and get a beautiful view of the rest of the maze you've really felt like you've accomplished something.

That stuck with me and I wanted to design something that would achieve the same sense of adventure and satisfaction, all while exploring the "behind the scenes" nature of Broadway theater, something Universal has not yet done in their parks but fits right in line with their mission statement. The Wicked IP would be the perfect transitioning point between the world of theater and the magic of the movies.

General Layout

5661_1024693634236465_7944916446385250195_n.jpg

Emerald City will be the central focus of the maze with hedges all along the borders creating a challenge to physically get to it. There will be no one defined order in which you go through the scenes. It's all based on how you progress through the maze.

In the map I've put the song choices for each area in quotes, which corresponds to the location of the song in the play. Indoor scenes will be "Dancing Through Life", "Popular", and "Defying Gravity". Outdoor scenes are "As Long As You're Mine", "What Is This Feeling", "Thank Goodness", and "One Short Day".

Wax models of the original Broadway cast will be used in lieu of AAs. The scenes will be elaborate dioramas. Think Disneyland's Sleeping Beauty Castle walkthrough but on a grand scale.

3056996772_8b8c9e9c12_z.jpg

Shiz Dorms/"Popular"

th

We see wax figures of Glinda and Elfaba sitting on the bed in this song. We also see a variety of wigs on display. Each scene functions as showing off a set piece from the musical and a behind the scenes bit on the production. In this case we learn of the many styles of wig Elfie and Glinda wear throughout the show as their characters evolve.

Shiz University/"What Is This Feeling?"

what-is-this-feeling-group.jpg

Elfie and Glinda figures are locked in conflict in the courtyard exterior of Shiz University. Also displayed are many "extra" figures each following Glinda and having very unique expressions on their faces. This is to show how even though the stars carry the performance, the bit players can really add to the mood and scale of a scene and hold a lot of the realism together.

Cornfields and Dorthy's Farmhouse/"As Long As Your Mine"

b36ed6844eeb077460bfb73d9db42551.jpg

The hedge maze turns into a full blown corn maze in one of the larger sections of the walk through. Here we see figures of Elfaba and Fiyero (the man who eventually becomes our beloved brainless Scarecrow) embracing in the middle of the field. In an open dome like structure we see an elaborate effect of Dorothy's house plummeting down from the tornado through Oz.

Even in the daylight the dome will project the swirling clouds of a tornado as a model of the house is rigged in midair in a tumbling fashion. If you look at the figures of Elfie and Fiyero the house is looming in the background creating a romantic but ominous mood. The dome structure is used to show off elaborate theater lighting techniques.

Munchkinland/Thank Goodness

5f545f015daf073eeab578d124b75c23.jpg

Here we see just how elaborate theatrical sets. On a multi-level outdoors exterior of Munchkinland we see Glinda delivering the false news of the Witch's demise. Forced perspective will be in great use hear as we see the good witch tower over the miniature buildings. The maze winds indoors and outdoors through Munchkin houses that take on a scale similar to Bag End from The Lord of the Rings.

OzDust Ballroom/"Dancing Through Life"

ef1e277b71522c58e1e938ce91d22d98.jpg

This scene illustrates the importance of choreography. On the maze of a dance floor in this indoors scene are the actual steps used in the dance number for this scene in the form of footprints (the same kind of footprints Charlie Brown uses to teach himself how to dance in The Peanuts Movie :) ) The winding footprints serve to make us even more lost and remind us how tricky it is to pull off the dance sequences Broadway requires. On all sides of the room we see the main characters of Elfie, Glinda, and Fiyero engaged in a romantic entanglement.

Emerald City/"One Short Day"

wicked2010prod460d.jpg

In the center of the maze is the huge exterior of Emerald City and the palace's main courtyard. Here we see Elfie and Glinda in awe of seeing the city for the first time and figures of the citizens welcoming them. This is where the importance of costumes in a theatrical performance comes into play.

We see Emerald City at the end of the play's first act after mostly taking place at the University. As such the bright colors and over the top costumes serve as a great juxtaposition visually to the rest of the act. This is highlighted here as well. Throughout the rest of the maze most of the costumes besides Glinda's pink dress will be earth tones. When guests reach the center of the maze the bright green colors colors of the costumes will give them a similar experience.

The Wizard's Chamber/"Defying Gravity"

tumblr_ljgjg8L3cK1qccd8go1_500.jpg

The most famous song of the show (and the song that pretty much inspired "Let It Go" from my perspective ;) ) will take place in the centerpiece of the maze. A grand spiral staircase wraps around Elfie's giant dress as she's lifted up and takes flight for the first time. A full blown recreation of the plays "flying dress" rig will be in display as a final display of the multiple aspects of theater.

Once at the top of the staircase guests get a great view of the rest of the maze from outside on the palace balcony. They then descend another flight of stairs back down into the Emerald City courtyard.

And thus concludes my tour. Guests may take the paths of this maze in any way they choose. It is designed to encourage repeat visits and explorations, and to give a very rewarding view to the people who reach the center and "defy gravity". With both memorable set pieces and valuable theater education this attraction would serve multiple functions and be a hit walk through to distract from the larger and more thrilling offerings. A humble yet exciting experience.

Challenge 3

For this challenge we were tasked with reviewing and either plus or redesign an attraction our fellow competitor created in a competition. I have chosen Primordial River from The Creator Games! I will be taking the redesign route.

How about some listening music?

Review

I agree that Dinosaur! isn't the most family friendliest of rides, and adding a relaxing boat ride will be able to perfectly parallel that. I have to admit the use of Jurassic Park and Jurassic World references are a bit jarring from the proposal seeing as how it's about a Disney ride, and not an Universal attraction. Right where the Carnasaurus makes it first marks is where this attraction goes down hill. If it is meant to be family friendly this shouldn't be part of the ride. This is quite frankly frightening would you want to ride a ride to find out a giant carnivorous monster is out looking for prey, and that prey is most likely you! Also a carnasaurus doesn't exit anywhere, but a carnotaurus is a thing so I'm assuming you mean him. So no this isn't a family attraction, and even if you a scaled down version of its appearance that thing by appearance alone is frightening!

Carnotaur_During_Ride.jpg

(The mighty Carnotaurus)

Redesigned Primordial River

Exterior -

As guests approach the exterior of the newly opened Dinosaur Institute Riverside Park they will be in awe. Exotic plant life right out from primordial times seem to be planted throughout the area giving off an exotic and ancient look. A river runs in front of the building giving a serene look, and a bridge made of wood stretches across over to the entrance of the ride. The building will be the same height as its sister facility. The building will have a curved archway with two long flowing banners promoting the ride. On the roof will be a covered dome of what seems to be the location of the main room in the queue. Off to the side of the building is a sloped room in the river. A large garage door has been opened, and inside floating is the Riverside Tour Boat which seems like an airboat. The building has been built into what appears as a mountain range with one having a waterfall feeding the river. The mountains will be providing a facade for the attraction.

Queue -

As guests enter the queue they are met with a large mural of the Primordial River with plenty of dinosaurs present. The queue in this room wraps around going from side to side before entering a long hallway. As guests go through the hallway they see pictures of various dinosaurs hanging on the walls. Eventually guests reach a turn in the hallway as they turn around, and go back. Upon going back they enter the main room of the queue. Guests will circle around a platform directly under the dome, and slim tall support beams reach from the platform to the sides of the dome. On the walls will be 5 panels each with information of 5 different herbivorous dinosaurs found on the tour. Appearing on the platform will be a hologram of one of these five different dinosaurs. The hologram will be made using the technology of Voxiebox. The support beams, platform, and dome will act as a modified box for the holograms. After going around the platform various time guests are admitted into the preshow theater. The preshow is of Ranger Nat (Lea Michelle) and Dr Mestu (James Hong) talking about the newly opened tour, and safety tips while enjoying the ride. The queue ends up in the loading docks where guests are assigned to their Riverside Tour Boat.

Scene 1 : The Glow Caves

Nat : As we leave the building we head into the glorious glow caves that wind through the mountains.

As guests enter the river they go through glow caves with the glow provided by glow worms. Soft relaxing wondrous music is played through the cave to cause a sense of mysteious amazement of the aesthetic of the cave. Guests will pass by a small waterfall. They will then pass by a Giant Salamander that occasionally pops up from the water. Boats will reach the cave exit, and see a primitive jungle at night.

Scene 2 : Triassic Springs

Nat : Welcome to Triassic Springs! Here we a selection of animals from the Triassic that are tria-fic!
Mestu : Yes we have the Plateosaurus the largest dinosaur of the Triassic, and Massospondylus what we believe is the first herbivorous dinosaur.

Guests will float by a series of geysers as they see plenty of Gerrothorax lounging on the rocks. Next will be a fully grown Plateosaurus standing on its hind feet with its front front feet on a tree about to be uprooted be it. The Plateosaurus is seen shaking the tree as it eats the leaves off it. Guests will go under the tree, and as they do it nearly falls on them. Up ahead on the river bank are a herd of Pisanosaurus. Some are drinking water, some are in the water, another is looking over the eggs that have been laid in their nests. Guests continue to float along as they prepare to exit the springs they pass by a Massospondylus who is in the water reaching over the guests to drink water. As guests pass under its neck they will hear water going doing his throat.

Scene 3 : Jurassic Jungle

Nat : The jungles of the Jurassic are a classic filled with even more great dinosaurs than before.
Mestu : Be on the look out for the Scutellosaurus while menacing in appearance its just a herbivore. Also keep an eye out for the Brachiosaurus it'll be a long shot if you missed it.

As guest embark onto a new part of the river. As they venture on they pass by tall trees with vines going down them. Guests will see a Lexovisaurus swinging its tail from side of the river fighting off against a Dacentrurus on the other side of the river also swinging his tail to fight. The dinosaurs will be elevated above guests, and the tails will seem to be swinging towards the guests at time, but luckily missing. After the boats float past the big fight they will encounter some young Brachiosaurus that head will be popping up from the trees. Another young Brachiosaurs will be laying down as the two exchange calls. Finally as guests leave this part of the river they encounter several Scutellosaurus. Two will be fighting overteritory, and another will be fawning over her new born babies.

Scene 4 : Cretaceous Lagoon

Nat : Looks like were in Creta-cool Lagoon! Some of the biggest, and my favorite dinosaurs are found in the Cretaceous time period.
Mestu : Yes, I bet when you think of a dinosaur it comes from this time period. Tyrannosaur, Triceratops, Velicoraptors, and even Iguanodons can be found here!

As guests journey through the river guests come upon a herd of hadrosaurs at least 20 of them. With three different species present these being Lambeosaurus, Corythosaurus, and of course Parasaurolophus. All three species will be interchanging different sounding calls using their different sounding crests to call upon each other. On land two Pachycepahlosaurus are seen fighting with a series of headbutts. All the while five Protoceratops are grazing while another one watches on in amazement, and fear mostly fear. A herd of Triceratops are then seen grazing alongside a herd of Styracosaurus as they keep their distance to not intrude on the others territory. Well the older ones at least the younger ones are seen playing. Several Iguanodons are seen playing in the water occasionally lightly splashing a guest. Finally as guests are about to leave the river an Ankylosaurus roars at them as it gets prepared to swing its tail, and luckily it misses the guests.

Scene 5 : Welcome Back

Nat : You guys did it! Yay! How was the tour? I know you loved it! Come back soon! I'm going to miss you!
(Nat starts to hysterically cry)
Mestu : Yes,well um. Nat do you mind I'm trying to say goodbye, but your tears are soaking my clothes.
Nat : We're never going to see them again! They're gone!
Mestu: They're tourists we've known for less than 30 minutes get over it! Now I bid you all farewell, and hope you continue to explore the world around you. Prehistoric or not the world is filled with natural wonders and surprises!

As guests float along inside a cave they reach the unloading docks, and well they leave.
