Disney Planning Two New Cruise Ships

We have some big news to share here at Disney Cruise Line. Actually, the word “big” hardly begins to describe it. We’re talking about news that’s more than 1,000 feet long and more than 200 feet high – multiplied by two!

That’s right, Disney is again expanding its family cruise business with plans to build two new ships, each of them showcasing the immersive family entertainment, enchanting storytelling and unparalleled service that only Disney can deliver.

The company has entered into a memorandum of agreement with the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany. The schedule calls for the new ships to be completed in 2021 and 2023.

“We pride ourselves on the unforgettable vacation experiences we deliver to our guests each and every day, and the expansion of our Disney fleet will allow us to create even more magical memories for families at sea and in incredible cruise destinations around the world,” said Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company.

While design plans, ship names and itineraries are still in development, the Walt Disney Imagineering team is already dreaming up exciting new innovations that will be uniquely fun and distinctly Disney. Each new ship will be approximately 135,000 gross tons – slightly larger than the newest Disney Cruise Line ships, the Disney Dream and the Disney Fantasy – and each is currently planned to include about 1,250 guest staterooms.

Since first setting sail in 1998, Disney Cruise Line has been an industry leader in innovation and game-changing creativity. For instance, with the launch of the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy ships in 2011 and 2012, the company introduced several firsts for the industry, including a water coaster at sea (AquaDuck) and virtual portholes in interior staterooms (Magical Portholes) that provide real-time views of the sea as well as sightings of animated Disney characters.

“The expansion of Disney Cruise Line only adds to our excitement for the unprecedented growth taking place across our vacation destinations, from new Star Wars experiences coming to the Walt Disney World and Disneyland resorts to the 25th anniversary of Disneyland Paris and the grand opening of our newest park, Shanghai Disney Resort,” said Bob Chapek, Chairman, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

More details about the Disney Cruise Line fleet expansion will be announced at a later date.

It was my goal to sail on each DCL ship once or twice in my lifetime, as it would never become a yearly thing like trips to WDW. Already had Dream & Magic under my belt, but now I have reasons to take even MORE vacations! :D

This is great news! I thought it would be another 15-20 years before we see new Disney ships. I was hoping these ships would be much bigger....maybe at 150,000 gross tons. There could be a 3rd smoke stack and more slides :D

I also wouldn't mind if all the cuts they've been making in the parks led us to a floating Magic Kingdom ;)

I'm actually happy they won't be much bigger. My experience is that larger ships don't really add much in entertainment value, just increase capacity (more rooms). The Dream and Fantasy are perfect sizes in my opinion.

Providing these are up to the same quality as the previous two models, I can't wait!

Yesterday it was two down and two to go. Now with two more I better hurry up and book a couple more cruises.

Didn't see that happening. Nice news but gets frustrating to hear all the double talk.

Hey guys we have to cut back payroll, not enough income. Did ya hear that we set new state tourist numbers. Shanghai is a money pit and killing the bottom line, had to reduce monorail hours and raise prices. Lets build a few more boats for a billlion dollars.

It gets ridiculous.

On my mobile or would have set that up as a proper conversation

Woooohooooo!!! This is tremendous news. Cruises are a terrific growth area and I'm glad to get two more brand spanking new ships to experience!

Go away negative Nancys. This is good news, not a signal to complain.

About time! They definitely have been too slow as a niche player in the cruise market. There is far more room for growth than two ships a decade.

I wonder what the world's cruise line capacity is compared ot 20 or even 10 years ago (i.e. combine Disney, Princess, Royal Carribiean, etc.) It seems like cruising has exploded compared to any other form of leisure.

Good news, but have to agree that the bigger ships do get awfully crowded topside. Not enough poolside seats for all the guests.

On the other critiques:
1. Shanghai will likely become very profitable once the park opens. Of course it's a money pit. All new parks are at this stage.
2. Cruise industry is in huge growth mode, but domestic resort industry is only in moderate growth mode.
3. Uh, raising prices at the parks is a direct result of high demand, not low demand.

Overall, the evolution of vacations is such that going to the parks is often the first type of Disney vacation for families. Next comes happy little cruises in the Bahamas, Caribbean, or even Alaska. Then the family gets bolder, if financially possible, and goes to Europe for a cruise and/or an Adventure By Disney. Of course, trips to the parks still happen, but they aren't quite as amazing compared to the more cutting edge places they've been going since. Meanwhile, plenty of people still go to the parks, and when travel costs are down and incomes are up, room occupancy and admission prices shoot up too.

What this means is that more destinations for the ships will be super cool and exciting, while trips to the parks end up being a little more on the ho hum side for veteran Disney vacationers. It's tough for a park to compete with actual travel to new destinations.

Or maybe I'm just all wrong about this. Either way, can't wait. And did anyone else notice that Disney stock is up nearly 2% today, far higher than the rest of the market? Coincidence?

I am going with Imagination for one of the names. :) Anyone have any guesses?
Not guesses but ideas:
Wish
Inspiration
Star
Adventure
Explore
(yes I know some other lines have ships with these same or similar names, but hey, CCL also has a Dream, Magic, and Fantasy dont they?)

Ooooh exciting! Sure, they won't be in operation for many years, but it's nice to know that they are expanding yet again. And amidst the budget cuts, this is good news. Not to justify those cuts but at least money is being spent somewhere. I have high hopes, and unlike some other areas of the business, I actually expect my high hopes to be met.

I hope that:
1: they don't cheap out and that this ship is very very nice just like the two most recent
2: there are no casinos
3: they have the classic two smokestacks just like the other ships (it looks like they will)
4: they are very low on pollution

Disney's other cruise ships are fairly low on air pollution but excellent in sewage treatment. Did you know that many cruise ships dump people's waste right into the ocean? Yes, and it's not illegal either. They just have to treat the waste if they plan to dump it near the docks, where people are swimming at nearby beaches. But in the middle of the ocean? They can just dump it unsantized. Eww, disgusting. I'm glad Disney actually goes far beyond what's required by the law in this case.

So I'm very excited and hope Disney holds to its high standards. If they do, just like they have been, I have no doubt these new ships will be as or even more successful than the others.

I am going with Imagination for one of the names. :) Anyone have any guesses?

Yes that's a pretty good guess. I'm guessing Imagination and Celebration. Or Imagine and Explore.
Edit: I like Wish as well. Adventure is very unlikely since the excursion service Adventures by Disney is so related.

By the way, are all of the names nouns, or are Wonder and Dream supposed to be verbs? Or has it never been determined? Because they should stick with whatever naming pattern they've been doing, I just don't totally know what it is.
