There is a solution to all of this... to all those who hate and loath sig's so much..
-Go into your "User CP",
-Click on "edit options", then scroll down to where is says
"Show user's signatures in their posts?" and select "No"...
Its as easy as that..... problem solved.... everyones happy

So we have to miss out on the very clever (and brief!) signatures of some members just to bypass the members who are a bit too long-winded?

I don't expect people to have to do this. With the information that people can hold in their profiles, and 5 lines in their signatures, I think that is more than enough. So if everyone follows the 5 lines rule we should be ok.
