Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

If a movie has really strong word of mouth there are cases where a modest hit can justify a sequel based on popularity. The first Austin Powers grossed $50 million but people loved it and no doubt had strong home video uptake. The sequel quadrupled the gross of the original. It did have the...

It's an interesting production decision that the immunity winner then has to take a minority group on reward. Not sure I like that. It's arguably a disadvantage paired with an advantage, but unlike separate reward challenges you can't make the strategic decision simply not to win it, without...

Venus is a very unaware character. She thought she was in on every vote and that hinting at having an advantage but thinking she was being clever by not outright saying it? Ouch. I did find to a degree the episode wanted to 'blindside the audience' as usual, by showing a lot of strategy talk...

I would not have predicted Apes doing particularly well given I found the previous two to be pretty forgettable. The first one was interesting as an origin story.

Yep. Everyone's an armchair quarterback. Make better movies. Less sequels. More sequels. Less superheroes. It's fine to discuss and speculate on what will or will not work, but no one can really say with any certainty what the winning formula is. If it were easy, there wouldn't be so many...

Home entertainment systems have contributed as well. 60+ inch televisions are affordable. It's not as good as the theater, but it's not terrible. The disparity between a theater and watching a movie on a 32 inch CRT television is long gone.

I think it's a lot of things. Poor audience behaviour is a big one. You invest time and money and it's a gamble whether or not you'll be seeing cell phones everywhere. My local theaters have very few "basic" showings. So many are VIP 19+, D-Box, 3D, laser ultra, and anything else that adds to...

Winning a reward means you get to choose who joins you and who doesn't. There's pros and cons to having that power. There's a reason many people suggest never winning the loved ones visit (when it was still a thing). You are going to inevitably make some people upset. Same thing here. It's a...

That is really low by modern standards of how a movie in the big summer action genre is expected to perform. Movies used to have $100 million opening weekends without breaking a sweat. Granted, this isn't a known sequel or franchise film, but it looks good, is being well received, and and has...

It's about branding as well. Straight to streaming movies are not going to be as big a draw or have the same perceived value as theatrical movies. This type of release strategy adds value to Disney+ as it is seen as the home of high quality theatrical movies.

Yep, Kenzie is well liked, is getting the air time, and isn't a huge target going into the final votes. Idols really are the best thing the show has introduced. They impact the game without breaking it. This season emphasizes the value of keeping them secret. They're interesting because so many...

    Save the Adventurers Club

I was under the impression it closed mostly because Disney wanted to remove the night club element at Downtown Disney. It did, from the sounds of it, have a lot of die hard fans. Maybe it was too many people taking up space every single night and not spending enough. They could do something...

Trip Report Shortest Retirement in History?

I'm surprised by this given how efficient Disney is at turning over guests in their restaurants. It's great they aren't rushing people during a character meal but it feels like they've gone from one extreme (rushing people) to the other (forcing people to wait around longer than they'd like for...

I'd be curious what a smaller budgeted horror film generates in the home video market because we don't really get info beyond theatrical box office. Kevin Smith makes smaller movies and he has said that the theatrical release was more of an advertisement for the home video release than an...

Again, I was not trying to criticize or judge any specific post. I don't think I even read those ones in detail as the movie is of no interest to me. Since the subject was raised I am merely suggesting that people consider what they post and be considerate of others when it comes to bringing up...

You're right, expecting common sense or common courtesy from others is a losing proposition.

24 months is an exaggeration. I don't know why it's a controversial notion to use spoiler tags in a forum thread that is about box office performance and not a general discussion of movies. There's a reason most discussions of shows on this website note that spoilers will be present in threads...

Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

You keep ignoring the fact that many, probably most, people won't see a movie until it's available at home. This doesn't mean they don't want to see it. There could be financial or any other number of reasons someone would wait. It's a weird argument that if you don't see a movie in the...
