A note from a local South Floridian -

Miami is going through a period of dramatic growth all of a sudden. There are multi-billion dollar developments every where in Miami at various states of development from proposals to actual construction. There are more projects measured in billions of dollars in Miami now than any city in the United States. Most of the projects are centered around downtown, the Brickell area, the Omni area, Miami International Airport, and so on. These projects are BIG. The art renderings I've seen are amazing. Many developers have purchases conjoining properties (like Walt Disney did but on a smaller scale) and announced master plans for megadevelopments on that land. There are so many that I can't even make a complete list (I've tried). So, the Fox theme park is not surprising, but this is the first time I've heard about it. Just keep in mind it is part of a new Miami. If it doesn't get built, there are plenty of other huge projects in the Miami area that will. Miami will look like look something from out of science fiction, very futuristic looking.

Which is just crazy cause Miami is an ecological disaster waiting to happen. That article in Rolling Stone should freak people out down there.

Lasseter is a drunk, a liability, and an embarrassment. He needs to go but nobody dares to say it. The 'new Walt' turned out the new Charlie Sheen instead.

To be fair, Walt was not without his vices. Granted, his vices were relatively minor compared to the legends about them. But even the greatest men are human and flawed not demigods.
That being said, it is probably not a wise idea to come up with creative business decisions when under the influence of alcohol . A point eloquently made on Colbert last night.

That "Drunk John Lasseter" video is slowed down to make him seem drunk. I don't believe he was drunk when that was recorded at all. However, the man does like his booze... I've heard stories.

A rather pitiful article appeared yesterday in USA Today titled Grown-ups find magic in Disney World offerings.

The article seems a desperate attempt to bring adults back to WDW. Today's WDW is much less adult friendly than it used to be. Consider:
  • Pleasure Island closed.
  • Disney's once truly adult theme park, Epcot, has been dumbed down into kiddie lands with the conversion of child-centric attractions in both Future World and the World Showcase such as Nemo and Friends, Kidcot centers, and Agent P's Adventure.
  • The highly touted (and pricey) additions at New Fantasyland are all targeted for the under-7 crowd. Even the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train will have a 38" height restriction, effectively a kiddie coaster.
  • The Magic Kingdom's only scary attractions, Alien Encounter and Show White's Scary Adventure, are gone.
  • The only thing frightening about Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is the price.
  • So much has been turned into revenue-generating "pirates and princesses" experiences, targeted for the under-7 crowd.
  • MyMagic+ mean adults wearing plastic bracelets. Really, wearing a plastic MagicBand is supposed to make us feel like adults?
  • Strollers have completely taken over all 4 theme parks. Renting out strollers is a huge money-maker for Disney with parents of lots of "children" well past the stroller age paying big bucks so their precious doesn't actually have to walk.
The only change targeted for adults in recent years is Disney's money grabbing attempt to turn both the Flower & Garden Festival and the Food & Wine Festival into drunkfests during Disney's slower seasons. Even these are getting out-of-hand. The World Showcase on Food & Wine Festival weekends is now an embarrassing shell of its former self.

If you are an adult wanting to vacation in Orlando, head over to Universal where they have truly adult hotels and restaurants, an active bar scene, 54" roller coasters, and shows & attractions that are not afraid of frightening children.

I hate to say it but I agree with every bit of the above and they are spot on. especially the bolded.

Thanks. You just effectively summed up why I am not only opposed to the MM+ debacle, but strongly anti-band as well. Really I don't think I would have wanted one as a kid either, but as an adult way too close to middle age, forget it.

I think they are still giving you an option of a card instead of the bands right? Or is that just during the test phase?

Yes, you always have the option of a card just like now. The only problem arises when there are a few features available that the bands can do which the cards cannot, so if you want to take advantage of those, you'll have a band in your pocket.

  • New Fantasyland are all targeted for the under-7 crowd. When was it ever said that anything in Fantasyland was to be targeted to adults. It's always been for kids.
  • only thing frightening about Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is the price. So a Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is supposed to be frightening? Wouldn't they have to change the name?
  • wearing a plastic MagicBand is supposed to make us feel like adults? No it's supposed to make things convenient. Why should it make you feel like an adult?
I think they are still giving you an option of a card instead of the bands right? Or is that just during the test phase?
At this point, I doubt that anyone knows how it's all going to end up, but my guess is that they will have to make the card an option. So...who knows??? :)

Not that Disney should be entirely without "scary" rides, but the lack of them isn't the real issue. The issue is that there's a lack of new good substantial rides period. You can make a fantastic ride without thrills or scares. But you can also just as easily make a garbage "scary" or "thrill" ride. What we really just want is good rides, and there's no rule that says they can't come in both flavors of scary and not scary.

The issue is that we're getting meet and greets replacing rides and nothing decent enough to properly make up for the loss. Not to mention wasting billions on the next gen debacle.

This has been debated to death, but how is waving your wrist, with attached band, past a scanner more convenient than waving your palm, holding a card, past the same scanner? I just don't get it - it's silly.

  • Not really. Maybe Dumbo, but 20000 Leagues, Small World, even the dark rides could be enjoyed every bit as much by adults. Now we have princess meet and greets as primary attractions.
Small World is still there and I'm sure that when you first rode 7DMT is was boring. Oh wait, you don't even know what 7DMT will be like, it's not completed yet. I'm sure that any adult that could possibly enjoy Small World, Peter Pan or Snow White would hate the Mine Train ride because it will be to immature. Besides Snow which wasn't all that great anyway, was basically replaced by Mermaid, which at least had some movement inside. Except for possible convenience 20K should have been in Adventureland anyway.

It's silly to continue to look at either the bands or the cards as anything other then tools that we use and if it is easier to wave your arm then to reach into your pocket or backpack and dig out your card then that would be what it is for. If not, I'm sure they will let you continue using the card. Does the same thing anyway. The following is not the same thing, I realize, but all I can think of is those prepaid things for toll roads. Is it easier to fish around for money or a pass, stop and either show the pass or aim properly and throw money at a plastic basket or to just drive through at 50 MPH. When it works like I suspect it was intended to work, it will be much more convenient then a card.
