Won a free trip?

I just got the strangest call from someone telling me that I had won a free trip to WDW. She was speaking so fast that I could barely understand what she was telling me. She tried to confirm my address for the paperwork, which I wouldn't confirm or deny, and when I asked the terms, she said that was included in the paperwork. All I got out of it was that WDW does a random draw.

Has anyone ever gotten this call? I smell a hoax...

I just reverse 411-ed the number and I suspect it was a student of mine, or one of their friends, trying to get info out of me. Does anyone have a main number to Disney to report fraud?

A good suggestion I've read about situations like this is to 1.) refuse to confirm anything and 2.) ask the person what department they work in or who their superior is, then hang up, call a main switchboard and ask to speak with the department or person mentioned to confirm what you've been told.

If you think its someone coming after you personally, then you should be calling the police, not Disney.

Actually, you should be calling the police either way, if you suspect a scam.

If you are a teacher, get an unlisted number! Or get "privacy manager" or caller ID. I second the post that said if you feel you are a victim of fraud call the police, then call WDW and report this to them as well. You can also call your state's AG office, they are always interested in phone scams.

I have called the police in the town that I work in. They're looking into it, but I will be stopping by the station tomorrow morning on my prep period. I called Disney as well to report it, but they just told me to call the police.

My phone is listed, but I do have a privacy screener. All unlisted numbers must annouce, and stupidly, this person did.

Luckily, I did not give out any information, but the person did have my address listed correctly. Each time she tried to confirm it, I asked her a question, which she dodged.

But either way...I feel sick to my stomach now. :veryconfu

I am sorry you feel sick but I understand. If this is a teen or a kid, they really don't yet understand that their actions have consequences beyond the moment. It is time they learned. It is good you called the police and WDW.

Case closed. It was three of my students that are in my first period class. The father of one of the kids called the police and turned them in. It'll go before the school resource officer and the principal first thing in the morning.

GAH!!!!

Thanks all!

WOW, stupid move on their part....but teens don't always have the best insight into what is good for them, do they?

At first that would seem like a pretty good practical joke if they knew you were such a Disney freak. But the fact that they tried repeatedly to confirm your home address brings most to believe they had an alterier motive. Hopefully your school SRO and Principal get everything squared away for you tomorow.

I would like to say, "GOOD FOR THAT FATHER!!!" Someone, please give that man a medal!

So many parents today would be too embarrassed or worried about their kids college prospects. Good for him for actually holding his child accountable.

so this case was fake .. ok

but in germany it's still somehow legal to do those calls commercially ..
you get mails, sms, fax, telephone calls and so on ...

so you get constantly bugged that you have won [enter fake prize here] ..
they only want your address so they can send you even more advertising .. you never get any price

I agree. If the father hadn't wanted to sqaure this away, I'd still be left wondering, left worrying and probably sleepless. I thanked him last night when we spoke for his honesty.

I'll post later this morning with the final result.

Kudos that father! Like my Mom always said "if you can't listen, you have to feel". Those kids will pay the price for their stupidity. I'm glad this resolved for you. I can only imagine how you must feel.

The three gentlemen were suspended for 5 days of school, are not allowed to return to my class (we're semesterized, and they would only have a couple more days past their suspension. I'll send their work to the library or guidance.), and they will pay the charge to have my phone number changed and unlist it for a year.

Not bad!

But seriously, they though it would be funny to call and tell me I won a free trip to Disney because I love it so much. Clearly they didn't realize that Disney Fans like us are well aware of the fact that Hello! All Disney calls have Disney on the caller id!! Of course I checked here first, then called Disney and the police second. Two towns worth of police, 3 suspended kids and a new phone number later, we can call it a day! :brick:

Oh, and of course it's all over the school this morning. I don't think those gentlemen need to worry about their parents/me, when the entire student body is horrified and defending my honor.

It's good to be a respected teacher. :ROFLOL:

One thing about kids , they just don't think about the consequences. Sorry for the scare, it is frightening. It's nice to know some parents care enough to report his own child. Kudo's to the father!
I have teenagers and they think they know everything! But they really don't understand life yet, and certainly don't think things through!
