Trip Report Well, I guess this is happening... July 12-28 Trip Report - Pre, Live, and Post

Hello and welcome to another Brifraz trip report. If you traveled with us before you know how it usually works - a brief pre-trip outline of plans, lots of live trip reporting, then after the trip some poorly completed scattered posts to try to wrap things up. Well, I'm doing a legit pre-trip this time. Why? Because there are some issues right now. Maybe you didn't realize that?

Which means I'm going to lead off this thread by opening it up to the debate. It's my thraed and I'm okay with that. A little debate will keep things lively - now I'm not talking about something like the thousand plus pages of debate on the mask/precautions/COVID threads, but a little discussion is totally fine and all opinions are welcome. Now, let me be clear I'm not asking I 'what you would do?' But, after reading things below, I welcome opinions on 'what do you think we would or should do.'

Obviously, you can't get into those kinds of discussions without knowing who we are and what we are all about. Here goes. Feel free to steal our identities if you need to.
6e44e73a-9723-4362-bef0-4b69fa60a0c5.JPG

Our crew is a trio. Two nearly-50 year old adults and a 16 year old rising senior in High School. The two adults are high school teachers and have been since the 1990s. Obviously that means our only potential vacation times are summer and Christmas. Two teacher salaries have by no means made us rich, but we prioritize travel. We feel it 'broadens the mind' even if it is somewhere we've been before - always trying new experiences and interacting with new people (heck, we've driven across the USA 3 times and Canada once). You can see in my signature, we head to WDW often and try very hard to make each trip unique in different ways. We had trips in December (with extended family) and January (as leader of over 100 high school kids plus families) and were planning a summer totally away from the World. We had a vague plan to travel to Europe for a few weeks driving through multiple countries. It was going to be the last big family trip before our daughter goes to college. But we just couldn't afford it - there was just no way to make it work. Since we are DVC and have some family-owned timeshare, we can stay at WDW (or that area) for pretty much nothing more than our expected annual fees and we drive from Maryland, so transportation is pretty cheap. Airfare and hotels around Europe was cost prohibitive. Our daughter already has a senior Disney trip planned with friends for next summer and we were possibly doing a couple trip as well, so buying an AP for late this summer through early next summer is also an expense that we expected (although we didn't expect it until next year). Thus, some time in late January, we decided that we would do some smaller trips (including college visits) around the country and then spend a week at WDW.

Sadly, the smaller trips are pretty much all gone due to the current health crisis. But our WDW trip is not until mid-July, so it might still be happening. Health-wise we are all in pretty good shape. Sure, we've got the usual little things that tend to happen as you get close to 50, but nothing that makes our immune systems compromised and certainly nothing that puts us in a higher risk group. As a pair of high school teachers, we get exposed to pretty much every bug that shows up in our communities and in general we weather things pretty successfully. Our daughter currently works at the local grocery store which similarly puts her 'in harm's way' on a regular basis. While the concern over the coronavirus is certainly in our minds, we also are used to taking precautions and have very little innate fear of getting sick. We also have no problem wearing masks or taking other preventative measures if we are traveling.

Why would we even consider still heading to WDW? Well, just like everyone, the past couple months have been tough for us (obviously, far less difficult than for many). We have been relearning how to do our jobs, we've had to cancel 11 major shows/performances (we both teach performing arts), and we're facing the prospect of our jobs/roles changing dramatically in a few months. Our daughter has (again, obviously) missed out on a number of usual things for HS Juniors and is quite concerned about the prospect of her Senior year being very altered. The stress and uncertainty of these things makes the idea of ANY kind of escapism very appealing - even if it is limited and changed from our usual expectations.

There's a little background on us and some elements of where we are coming from with this (possible) trip. For the sake of discussion, let's assume that WDW will be relatively fully open by mid-July, but with significant precautionary measures in place. I'll be back soon with some of our thoughts on the trip and what we might or might not be planning and doing if it happens.

So sorry for all your stress during this time, @brifraz ! I am sorry your vacation was taken from you. We were supposed to go on an Alaskan cruise with older relatives this year and that got cancelled (of course). We're bummed because it would have been really nice to be with family.
Any chance you guys can bank the DVC points and head to Hawaii for Thanksgiving or Christmas time? I know the teaching schedule is rough, I'm a teacher, too and we try to go to WDW during the Fall Break time. If it makes you smile, I've been binging your family trip reports tonight during this time of boredom and uncertainty---holy cow! What amazing athletes your wife and daughter are!

I wish your daughter best of luck with her senior year, however it plays out. Remote teaching wasn't the best way to finish teaching the primary grades this year, but I hope your family can find a "new normal."

Thanks for the support! Obviously, it's a unique situation - as it is for everyone right now and we know that our stress is only a small percentage of what many people are feeling at this time. We try to keep things in perspective (although last night it was pretty tough!!).

I really hope that you get to do your Alaska cruise (with Disney??) at some point. We did the Disney one last year and had a wonderful time. We really splurged on our excursions and it was definitely worth it for us.

We could bank DVC, but right now we are leaning towards sticking this one out and still going in July. It will be a reduced experience, but maybe it'll have some unique things that will surprise us! Sadly, the district we teach in only gives Wed/Thu/Fri for Thanksgiving and no other Fall break so any trip beyond a couple hours drive/flight tends not to be worth it. We are exploring some options for Christmas, but with paying for college on the near horizon we are being quite careful with spending (hence bailing out on the original Europe plans) and flights to Hawai'i are pretty outrageous from the East Coast. We have family in California and even those flights end up costing us over $2k.

Many of my elementary school friends have been surprised by the level of engagement from their kids (in a good way!). I'm hoping that it has been the same for you. I don't want to go crazy into the policies of our district with this remote learning, but they have made it pretty easy/attractive for high school kids to do an absolute minimum of work and then start their summer vacation. Luckily our daughter is an over-achiever and has stuck things out - yesterday they had an online Chemistry II class and I think she and one of her friends might have been the only ones out of 20+ in the class who showed up.

Here's hoping - for everyone out there - the next couple months allow things to slowly move toward something like normal!

I think you should try and go in July (I just don't because I can't get used to that HEAT!). We know even for us in late Nov, it will be a reduced experience but still enjoyable in it's own special way! College expenses are something else, man! I just hope your daughter chooses a place she ends up loving and makes wonderful friends (and learns something, but it sounds like she's good at that!) Maybe she can get a partial track scholarship to a small school? Ahhh, I forgot about those East Coast/Hawaii flights ... it's cheaper for us in Colorado to fly to California then Hawaii from there instead of Den-Hawaii.

Anyway, can't wait to hear about your trip in July!

Wow is this weird. I hope July works out. If I were planning a first trip I wouldn’t go, but I know you’re not in that boat. I think your family sounds like you could have a great time even in these circumstances. We’ve definitely spent whole days exploring resorts, swimming and just checking things out.
We rescheduled our trip for December. Honestly, I’m hoping they keep some restrictions in place. We usually rope drop and keep at it all day, even with two little kids. It wouldn’t be terrible to have to explore Kidani. We haven’t stayed there before but I think it should be good, even if we can’t go to the parks. I bet your family is the same.

I'm still going in July as well. I'm a Florida resident and didn't get my annual trip in last year, so I feel the need to just be on property. Currently scheduled July 15-19 so if you're there at that time, maybe our paths will cross!

The other side of things is that now EVERY other thing we had planned for the Spring and Summer is cancelled. We really need some kind of escape.

That’s how we are. Our original April trip was canceled and we canceled the back-up July trip (recent announcement wise, it wouldn’t have been open anyways). We just booked a last minute trip to the beach because we need a break from here. We’re calling it “social distancing with a better view” 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

It certainly is weird. Definitely would not go if this was a first trip!! We are hoping to be able to possibly do some resort hopping just to explore some places we don't normally get to - and hopefully aren't that crowded. Also thinking about the possibility of bike or boat rental if those are 'allowed.' Gotta worry about too much time shopping, though!!

I should be pretty easy to find - look for the guy with the Disney mask (homemade). ;)

After watching some people at local resorts, I definitely feel like the precautions people will take at Disney will make it safer there than at the local parks/beaches/etc.

Yeah, Disney is definitely going to be our 'better view.'. I'm not confident that social distancing is going to be possible at any vacation spot this summer. We really aren't beach people (unless we are camping there) and tend to like vacations with a lot of get up and go - hoping with the adjusted hours we still find things to get up and go to!

That's a great idea! I think we'll be doing that too, in Nov! I know they have mobile order for all the quick services but how are we going to get our drinks at bars? (That's a perk of resort-hopping for me). :jawdrop:

I would hope bars will be open, but maybe not with bar seating or with plexiglass? If you’ve read my reports before you might’ve seen that the Gurgling Suitcase at OKW is really our home away from home!

I have seen that! Depending on where we stay this year, we may be able to give it a try! I noticed OKW has a boat to the Springs. Do you find it running frequently?

Generally, there's a boat about every 15-30 minutes. It takes about 10 minutes to get to OKW from Disney Springs. It's a very nice boat ride past Saratoga and then past the treehouses and golf course, then along one side of OKW. We really enjoy it.

So here are the current discussion in the Brifraz/Meffysmom household...

Okay, we have 6 days (really only planning on 5) at a timeshare offsite, annual passes, and 4 days (3 nights) at Old Key West.

Will we be able to book parks 'easily' during those first 5/6 days?

Will we get the parks we hope for during the 4 days on site?

Okay, so those are the big questions that then drive us to a couple more questions. We could add another night at Old Key West at the end of our stay to possibly 'guarantee' another day in the parks. We also could possibly add more time at the timeshare offsite before our visit - we just cancelled a week in San Francisco and now have timeshare to spare (okay, I just wanted to go with that rhyme). And the idea of going down another full week plus early and getting in on AP preview days is not without its merit. The idea of being there for those (potential) AP Preview Days is quite interesting to us.

If we end up with almost 2 weeks in an offsite timeshare what might we find to do in central Florida? Of course, that's assuming that we can't get park reservations with our Annual Passes.

So, we are planning to wait and see for another week or so and hope that Disney comes out with more information so any decision we might make is actually 'educated.' ACK!!!

Just my thoughts but you probably will not be able to go to the parks staying offsite with your annual passes. I would add another night to OKW.

We are facing a similar dilemma. We own a condo close to Disney so we are always off property. We are AP and had originally planed a trip last week of June into first week of July. When reopening was announced we moved our dates to last 2 weeks of July. So now we are wondering, will we be able to get reservations for park access? Should we revise our dates again to hopefully experience AP preview days? We love to go to Disney Springs, not so much to shop, but to enjoy the entertainment options (like watching a certain orchestra and band perform). Now that there is no entertainment so what are our other options if we can’t get park reservations? We are also taking the wait and see approach and will wait another week or two to decide. The only thing for certain is that we will go this summer. We and our daughter’s family all need a time to get away to our happy place. It may be a very different happy place than we have ever experienced before, but that’s okay too.

Yeah, Disney Springs will certainly not be the same without live entertainment (I'm talking about the really good stuff, not that certain orchestra and band ;)). Originally we had Cirque tickets for the new show and were considering an evening at Splitsville and obviously Cirque isn't happening and not sure if Splitsville will be open or not. We do still enjoy just walking through Disney Springs and just shopping and people watching, but I doubt that will hold our attention for 5 days if we are not getting any park time!

The email that they sent out to AP holders said that we would get a chance to reserve space in the parks before any new tickets are sold and (based solely on forums and FB groups) it sounds like many are cancelling reservations so maybe onsite folks won't fill things to capacity. But, who knows!? My hope is that information will be forthcoming at least a month out, allowing people to re-make reservations, etc. This morning was when the last of our different reservations disappeared from MDE, so I'm hoping that maybe they will start re-booking things even sooner. The waiting is certainly tough!

We have reservations for POFQ in September along w/ tickets purchased...we had to bump our April out for obvious reasons. I will be curious to hear what you think of the reservation process for the parks, and how many people are actually allowed in each park. Disney did cancel our dining reservations already, but I still have the reservation active to build a light saber. I guess I will wait and see if that drops off as well.

Good luck with your WDW adventure, and I would go for the extra OKW day for a better chance at the parks.

-we have Annual Passes, but they are not activated yet
Circle of Flavors: Harambe Nights
We are in the same boat as you. Im assuming by your posts that we will be there the same time and would have been at the same Harambe party. We also have APs that we haven't activated yet, but we have our stay from July 20 - August 3 at Coronado. Hope we know some things soon.

Pretty darn close - July 19-28 off-site and then OKW. Really want to know something soon as well! I do hope that the Harambe party (as well as Keys to the Kingdom and photo sessions) are things that we end up being able to re-book. Those were most likely our three biggest highlights for this planned trip. The new Cirque show would have been cool, but that's definitely not happening. As mentioned above, our biggest concern is the 5 days off-site...

Still hope to see you there!
