Will ANYTHING ever happen to Discovery Island?

It is hard to imagine there ever being enough ROI to justify the expense that would seem to be needed to provide enough water/sewer/electricity to the island for any of the intensive uses previously mentioned. Here's hoping they can make good use of the space one way or the other.

They could put the backyard BBQ over there along with some sort of sing-a-long and maybe a few aviary's. It would be a boat trip over but fairly simple. The behind the scenes may be more difficult due to having to move everything by boat but it is doable.

All the suggestions of simple things (dinner shows, mini golf, etc) aren't really viable. By the time they rewire (it needs it) sort out plumbing (most likely shot), clear the place (its a mess) and then build whatever it is they were to put on there they've lost any hope of it being profitable for a long, long time. Just imagine the expense of laying fiber, power, plumbing all over again, all the heavy plant machinery needed to restore the place, etc. Then you need new ferry boats to get people there, most likely new docks, and probably thousands of extra things I can't think of.

I don't see it ever being viable. Theres nothing to gain in wasting time spending money on it (something Disney arent exactly going to be in a position to do for a few years now).

Anything you do with the island needs to be profitable. Disney is a business.

Because of its small size, you're not going to get a profit through volume. So, whatever it is converted to is going to be relatively expensive.

And it doesn't make sense to convert that land to a profit center when there's so much other land that's much more accessible to make into the same thing as whatever you were going to do to the island.

If the old water parks was left to rot for decades until converted into DVC, you can pretty much bet that the island will be left to rot a lot longer.

Exactly. And to add to your point, Disney has A LOT of land. Why bother putting something (small) on a island when they have bigger plots of land all over WDW.

It's only a tiny percent of available land that Disney owns. Accessing it requires a boat trip, which also adds to the cost. Anything other than a nature reserve which is what it basically was, could easily be situated elsewhere more cheaply. For these reasons I'm guessing it won't be used for anything else.
