Who's the Cruise Director on the Dream?

You didn't like "Believe"? We saw it on the Dream on stage and thought it was very good. Maybe its because it wasn't "live".

I've seen Believe a couple times on different ships. It's good but not my favorite of the stage shows. Honestly, of the 3 ships I've been on I think the shows on the Fantasy collectively are weaker than those on the Dream & Magic collectively for each of those ships.

I didn't think the TV had much to do with it, as the other shows we were way in the back from showing up late and didn't have the best of views. The TV actually was a better view.

In general, I thought they butchered a lot of the Disney classics...the genie seemed geared more towards a flamboyant male (if you get my idea) than the genie. Overall, the genie in general just seemed cheaply put together....

Believes casting probably had a lot to do with it as well. The idea that a heavy set white guy has a biological daughter that looks like she's straight from Nigeria kinda ruined things...I'm good with my imagination (I think you have to be to do Disney every year), but I couldn't mentally sell myself on that one...and usually I can look well beyond that kind of thing but the contrast between the two characters was just too much...I'm sure I wasn't the only person who was just like HUH?! when they finally started putting the "story" together...

I think the Cruise Directors are part of what makes the Disney cruises so much fun. I mean, I'm sure Carnival and the rest have them too, but the ones on the Disney ships just seem to have so much personality (like Christian, who we had on the Dream this past January...his pre-show banter was sometimes as entertaining as the shows themselves). They're as much a part of the "show" (by which I mean the whole Disney Thing) as the serving team, and we've loved all of them.

I agree that they have big personalities and are part of the show. And while I like them personally, I really HATE sitting through the pre-show/post-show dreck. "Did we have a great day in Cozumel???" "Hey kids, don't you love the free soda?? That's right, parents, we load 'em up with sugar and carbonation and then send 'em back to your stateroom for the night!!" Hey, I'm here to see The Golden Mickeys. Here's an idea . . . send out Ensign Benson already!!

And man does a good Ensign Benson make or break "Golden Mickey's". The first one I saw totally sold the part, to the point where at the start of the show I believed she was an actual crewmember. The second one, though, seemed much more actressy, and so she wasn't as good.

If we're talking about the shows overall, we love "Believe" the most. I never questioned the ethnicity of the daughter with her dad because we never do see the mother, who could be black, white, Asian, etc., which would account for the differences. And the Baby Mine sequence brought us to tears both time.

And I'll also say nothing will probably top my first cruise, when I shared the hot tub with Cruella de Vill in her off hours. ;)

@ChuckElias, I'm with you. I don't care so much about the cruise director either way. The pre-show ramble that they aaaaalways do annoys me to noooooo end. This is a huuuuge pet-peeve. I get that it's a good opportunity to have a captive audience to give info to, etc. but it's the "Did we have a great day in Cozumel today????" blah blah blah blah blah that irks me. I came here at this set time to see the SHOW. I did not come to see someone who likes to hear himself/herself talk. I think they get too talky much of the time. Get off the stage and start the stinkin' show already. I'm not here for the cruise director comedy act. THAT annoys me. REALLY annoys me. THAT's when I most want to throw things at this person. But I know I'm a super impatient person to begin with so I thought it was just me who found the pre-show rambles irritating.

My favorite Disney cruise show? Disney Dreams - An Enchanted Classic, hands down. I can pull that one up on YouTube and watch it over & over. Never gets old. Loved it so so much. I thought the farewell show on the Magic was pretty dang great, too. :D

What happens on the Disney Magic stays on the Disney Magic!!

It was a total geek moment for me, to get to talk to a someone in a more casual setting, about what the contracts are like, what it's like to perform on a ship that's moving and sometimes shaking. I would love a Keys to the Kingdom style tour to come to the ships, to get a look behind the scenes at the theater stuff, the sets, and costumes, and such.

Well, then I'm about to make you very jealous. If you go to the DCL Picture of the Day thread, starting with this post:

http://forums.wdwmagic.com/threads/dcl-picture-of-the-day.638799/page-21#post-4711950

you'll see some pictures that I got on and UNDER the stage of the Walt Disney Theater during our Med cruise in '07.

I must say that I thought that Jimmy, who was our cruise director on the Wonder in May, was good in that regard. I never felt that he kept talking too much. At least to me it seemed like an informative talk that was presented in a entertaining way, not that he regarded himself as entertainment. The only show where he was talking more was on the first evening, but I think there he indeed is part of the show?

That was my favourite by far, too! But then I have only seen three so far... (Golden Mickeys, Toy Story and Dreams).

Jealousy achievement unlocked! That's incredible! I'll have to ask on arrival for our 7 night Fantasy if there's anything similar.

I think there's very little chance that anything similar is offered. Our experience was not scheduled or requested. It was one Cast Member who was very gracious to us. If you decide to ask about doing something like this, I would not go to Guest Services. I would strike up a conversation with one of the guys in the "tech booth" and tell them your background, and eventually ask if they can take you backstage.

Good luck, it was really fun!

I'll keep that advice in mind...thanks.

Here's a question for more knowledgable folks...this probably shows what a novice I am to cruising, but what does the Cruise Director actually do? Like, day to day, besides making announcements and appearing before the show?

The Cruise Director is ultimately responsible for all the entertainment on board. S/he coordinates all the activities in the public spaces (including meeting times/places for shore excursions). I'm sure there's a ton more, and I think you'll get a little better idea by watching the video that @wdwstateofmind posted above in post #26.
