Where in the World Isn't Bob Saget?

Thank you, you too!

We were so appreciated today that our district was sponsoring lunch from a nearby restaurant. Pulled pork. We went into the workroom at lunch, and nothing was there. Only to get an email an hour later from our superintendent saying he mixed up the days, and it's actually tomorrow that we are getting lunch. But he did offer to bring us pizza if we didn't have a lunch. My team had prep at that time, so we just went to a fast food place in town. But it wasn't to best way to start the week.

Our district used to provide us with a meal. Now they give us a $15 gift card to a local business of our choice. It is so much better than the lunch they used to provide. Being a teacher in a middle/high school we won't get as many appreciation treats from parents as our elementary staff, but that's okay.

Each day we are (or were supposed to) have something from the district/admin/school board. I said the meal, but also ice cream, bagels one morning, and beverages another day. On Friday the elementary parent-teacher group is actually catering a local Mexican restaurant for the entire district's staff. They didn't need to go beyond the elementary school, but they chose to anyway. They did the same thing last year. They're amazing people.

The parent-teacher group is also doing something for the elementary school each day. Breakfast pastries today, sandwiches tomorrow, pizza on Wednesday, snacks on Thursday, and then the Mexican food on Friday. There will be raffle baskets on Thursday and Friday.

The past couple years have been amazing from them. I also got a gift card from one family today, and I got a couple books off my Amazon wishlist as an early list a couple weeks ago. Today, one kid walked around in the morning and gave little goodie bags with gift cards to random teachers. We've been very lucky. But I think some of the over-the-topness comes from multiple failed operating referendums in the past couple years, so some families want to shower us with support.

In my very younger years I was as stubborn as a 5 year old could get. My cousin, (2 years older) lived next door and tried to teach me the alphabet and some very basic math, but I refused to be drawn into it. Back then kindergarten wasn't a thing. You started in 1st grade and I wasn't about to learn anything until I absolutely had to do so. So when you consider my early age rebellion tendencies I have to thank those teachers (mostly nuns) for having the patience to get me at least partially literate and only dragged me across the class room by my ear a couple time. I'm sure I deserved that and at the time corporal punishment was not only accepted but parentally appreciated. Good times!

Never get near my uncle and talk about Catholic school and Sister Benigna. Every holiday, we try to avoid it. Someone brought her up on Easter and he went off telling his stories. Everybody who had her has PTSD from her and say she's in hell right now. I really don't think what has been described being corporal punishment but child abuse.

Closer to parentally Encouraged Child Abuse. It's just the way it was in the 50's. It was thought to be "helpful" to childhood development. We've gone the other way now where the teachers are the targets and that is encouraged too. We are a very confused species.

I remember them as very strict and occasionally unfairly judging what a young child might have been reacting too. For me 1st grade gave me Sister Mary James who was calm and very patient, 2nd grade brought Sister Augustine Marie who was angry all the time like her "habit" was a little to tight. I hated her and worked my butt off just to make sure I wasn't held back (a common occurrence back then). Onto 3rd grade with Sister John. She was a sweet older nun that was in charge of the candy closet that she would open to give us something for our efforts. We never saw her do anything harmful and we were all well behaved because we collectively loved her. Things were looking up an I excitedly entered the 4th grade classroom the first day to find that Sister Augustine Marie had also been promoted and was now teaching 4th grade. (egad) The next year walked into the exact same Sister Augustine Marie who had apparently passed the 4th grade and was now teaching 5th grade. After another godawful year 6th grade brought relief and calmness in the form of Sister James Marie.

Junior High was another terrible person named Brother Phillip! And my parents wondered why I hated the thought of going to school. That part was probably the reason that I didn't get any further degrees after Associates. Now that I am old, I can look back and think that I could have done better in life had I gotten further education beyond that but I don't blame the past for that. I blame myself for not being more aware of the world. Maybe called PSTD now, but it was foolishness and stubbornness on my part.
