Ivory Tower Squabble EST 2011. WINDMILL SURVIVOR
Hubby and I are watching 42 (The Story of Jackie Robinson).
I am alternately ashamed, proud, and horrified.
While things aren't perfect, thank you Lord that the majority of us don't feel this way anymore.

Yep, times they did a change. I was in WDW a few years ago and someone called me a Yankee in a context that even my parents could not relate to. Unfortunate.

I and my family had the misfortune of being in a hotel room for the night driving down to Florida when I was a small kid the night Martin L. King was shot. We were in Perry Georgia. My Dad threw us in the car saying we had to get out of there as the riots had started. He had us lay on the floor of the car as large groups of people threw rocks at our car as my Dad headed for the highway, he didn't stop for red lights. He said our blessing for getting out of Dodge that evening was he had filled the car with gas already. I was so scared and yet really didn't grasp what the heck was happening, much like my DD on 9/11.

In something completely different..
ladies and gentlemen..
OPERATION CAKE AT HOME was a SUCCESS!
There was birthday chocolate cake at home.. I am now a 31 year ancient old hag.

Will continue devouring cakes in the following years without a single tiny sense of shame ;)

Conflatulations! and happy birthday!!! ;) :D :)
You know 31 is the new 21, right?
Good Lord I hate that stupid phrase and the other variations of it. :grumpy: Sorry.
Every time I hear it, I just wanna' sit myself shilly. :cyclops:

I never pictured you as being tall - don't know why.
Yeah...6' 4" I'm pretty sure it has been brought up several times on other threads talking about leg room.

Space Mountain is a killer as are a lot of the older attractions. I also prefer an aisle seat when it comes to live theater.

That is where I was told I shouldn't be able to sit where I was sitting. I have season tickets to our local theater (aisle seat...so I have extra leg room) and the lady (sorry...female) behind me tells me I should be ashamed to block their view. "Lady it's time for YOU to move."

I sit it the same seat every time and I HAVE TO MOVE? So my party of two is less important than her party of three? There is no where else for me to go, but I have to appease her because she felt slighted by God?

Why do I have to suffer for her happiness and have to move to the back of the balcony? Why can't she find another seat?

I held my ground and did not move. She ended up causing such a fit that the ushers made them leave.

I was quite embarrassed, but only because the actors onstage noticed the ruckus.

I guess I am a SOB...

DH has similar legroom issues, due not only to his height but his orangutan legs and arms (he wears a shorter sleeve than his 6'8" brother). Whenever we go to concerts I have to make sure I reserve an aisle seat for him. I'm 5'4" so it's never an issue for me.

Your dad was an intelligent, resourceful, quick thinker, and did very well to protect his family. I am truly impressed with how he handled that whole situation.

Traumatic incidents that happen in your childhood remain lodged in the recesses of your memory. Unsettling as it must have been for you to draw upon the memories of that experience and share them, I'm glad you did. We can all learn from good or bad events in history, and hopefully shape a new and better world.

All I remember from the MLK assassination is the 16 inches of snow we got in Memphis in late March. That's still their all time record. The sanitation workers went on strike while the snow was piled up and King made two trips to Memphis to support the strike. I suppose I was too young for the April 4 assassination (and the RFK assassination a couple of months later in LA) to make an impression. But I remember the snow.

It's only 4.5 hours from here. If the weathers nice I might just go.
