As for the badminton comment I made, I can remember we were playing doubles in a tournament-style competition in my PE class sophomore year. I was the tallest in my class, and my partner was the shortest guy in the class. He also is the fastest person in my grade level. Mind you, I'm not fast at all and would probably lose a race to 50% of my grade level. Together we won all of our games and got to the "championship" as the first seed. The second seed only lost to us. In the end we ended up losing to them. Sad times.

The skill I would bring to that snowboarding competition would really be something to see. No one can fall over as quick as I can.
I prefer to just coach the Olympians. Shaun White constantly calls me for advice. Sometimes he calls me a little bit too much, and I have to let it go to voice mail.

DH is 6'4" and has been since middle school so he was always asked if he was a basketball player. His standard response now is "No, are you a jockey?"
I'm only 6ft, but had my growth spurt very early and was the tallest guy in 6th grade. For one year, I was a center in basketball and everyone wondered how tall I would get. After another 30 years, I'm still 6ft and haven't played basketball since.
Now, soccer is another story. Been playing since I was walking. For one glorious year of my youth, we lived in Northern Scotland and that eliminated any doubt in my mind as to the best sport in the world. I currently coach my daughter, play in an indoor adult league, and just got my referee's license. And this evening, while most people watch the Olympics, my wife and I are watching the two English Premier League games that we taped this morning.

I absolutely LOVE soccer. Although, I started out playin', and, was raised on baseball since the time I was a wee tot. I played every single position, and played them well. But, when I was 15, a local soccer league caught my interest, and I started playin' in it. I thought it was so cool, and still do, 'cause it's really one of the very few sports played with a ball where you can't use your hands during most of the play. Although dad was, and still is, a huge baseball fan, he went with it as myself, my two younger bros, and eventually my younger sis all ended up playin' soccer, as well as baseball. And, at some point, he coached each and every one of us in each sport as well.
I'm only 5'-10", but, had some guns, and still do, to really knock a baseball around, but there was still somethin' about soccer that just really appealed to me more. Although I REALLY loved playin' halfback 'cause it was all about bein' all over the field switchin' back and forth from offense to defense I spent most of my time playin' defense, 'cause that's were most coaches told me they saw me at my best. I really got a rush outta' bein' the last line of defense (aside from the goal keeper, of course - which I actually played sometimes as well in a pinch and actually almost got switched to that position at one point. I was quick, but ultimately a taller player won out 'cause he had longer arms
).Anyway, sorry for the long post, but ya' kinda' took me down a good memory lane...!

I played in the first league I mentioned and then also played varsity soccer my junior and senior years in HS. Those were the first 2 yrs. my HS even had it in the athletic dept. We lobbied the school board to finally include it. After that I also played in the Austin city league for a coupla' years and also on an IBM (NOT I Blame Meg
) league team 'cause my pop worked there until he retired. He played in that same league 'til he was 57 yr's old, BTW.

ahhh, not so sure about that. I understand things said in passion of discussion, it isn't generally deliberate and often it is honest ignorance, though sometimes people do throw derogatory words in to offend others, but in this type of forum generally that isn't the case.
Rationalizing or defending poor choices of words not so much. The Hobbit was written in a different time as was Snow White and the Seven Dwarf's and Tom Sawyer. I don't have an issue with any of these as you can't hold works accountable to a different eras standard. 2014, I doubt Dwarf's would be the name for the 7, yet we can't change that and to try would just be foolish and equally awkward. Yet as times evolve one can't use works of yesteryear as a defense for utilizing derogatory words in the 21st century. Make sense?

My DS and soccer was hilarious. When he played defense and the team was coming at him, the terror. My DD version of soccer was to sit down and pick dandelions. Finally they both stuck with baseball/soft ball and swimming. Both ski but for enjoyment never competitively. I soooo wasn't a soccer Mom.

Unfortunately, I have yet to see that flick, but, I've heard it's a good'n.
From the time I was a very young child I learned that good people and bad people come from every walk of life and I don't judge based on ANY kind of physical appearance. But, I always chuckle and roll my eyes anytime I hear someone say they are "color blind", etc.
BULL STUFF! To be a human being and then say you don't notice the color of other folks skin is so beyond disingenuous that's it not even laughable. I just don't let it affect my initial impression of a person. I prefer to reserve my judgement of their character until I've interacted with them as a fellow member of the human race.
