When’s Disney Going to Stop Using the Rudish Designs of Mickey & Pals

It has seriously gone way too far, because they keep using the same Rudish/Mercury Filmworks design/style for these iconic Disney characters on literally EVERYTHING at Walt Disney World, including but not limited to:
•the ending to The Wonderful World of Animation at Hollywood Studios
•Runaway Railway attraction at DHS and DL
•The yellow ticket featuring Mickey Mouse
•Strollers
•Decor at the All Star Resorts
And most recently,
Candies sold at Walt Disney World

And to be honest, this could have worked in 2016, when the shorts were still producing brand new episodes, but in 2026, when they stopped producing them three years back and are only airing them once in a while on Disney Channel and I know they’re on Disney Plus, it shouldn’t be fair for Disney to incorporate Television Animation to commission these designs in the parks and yet they refuse to commission anything related to such TV Animation IPs like “Big City Greens”, “Kiff”, “Gravity Falls”, “The Owl House”, “The Ghost & Molly McGee”, “Amphibia” into the domestic theme parks for no reason despite most of them being really popular, like how Kim Possible and Phineas & Ferb got into the parks, I’m so sick of Disney mistreating their TV Animation division like a burden (aka: the mistreated child of the family), and only using whatever is relevant to the company rather than giving their recent original content any attention in the parks

Disney, please stop with the Rudish designs and redo everything with them if none of the other TV characters can make it to the parks

They will use them as long as it’s the most recent incarnation. It’s not really that big of a deal, really. Designs come and go. Some stay for awhile some stay a long time. This one will go eventually.

At least these were really, really good, widely acclaimed shorts instead of total misses they’re sticking with.

Unpopular opinion, but I actually like these designs, partially because those cartoon shorts are actually funny. I think I know why they use them on products too - classic Mickey (not vintage Mickey) has a certain level of "lameness" to it due to him being just a corporate mascot and not a character with personality for so many years, or just a toddler's show host, etc.

Hopefully soon. I’m tired of the Rudish style taking over everything, from the ride to most of the merch, and now even bleeding into Toy Story with the new annual passholder design. I’m over the temu Ren & Stimpy Disney look

I miss the days when Brian Blackmore was creating a lot of Disney merch. Most of his work came before the Rudish variant started to dominate many of the Mickey appearances we see in modern merch and branding. He did a lot of the 2000s era designs from Mickey on Magical Express to even milk carton art and it all looked fantastic.
If you are not familiar with him, give him a follow on IG @brianblackmoreart . He made some wonderful work and it really captures that classic Disney Parks feel. It is a shame seeing how much of that visual variety has faded, especially when Sorcerer Mickey used to be so much more present for example.

Zooming out, it is part of a broader shift toward flat simplified design in Disney merchandising with cleaner shapes, and minimal shading.

Older designs had more texture, shading, and personality which gave him a lot more warmth and familiarity. The OG style just connects more for a lot of people, especially now as tastes shift back toward more detailed and expressive illustration.

It would be great to see the Rudish style take a bit more of a backseat so we can get a broader return to those older interpretations again. Here is some classic merch for a bit of nostalgia from before the modern flat design shift took over. Many of these were illustrated by Brian Blackmore himself!

While these are cool and definitely nostalgic, I think they look a little too old fashioned, and not in a way that I think would work as a vintage/throwback piece.

Yeah I’m be honest, I’m kinda tired of those designs popping up everywhere. I liked them initially, they felt like their own separate thing and weren’t nearly as dominant when the show started. The style worked for that series since it was super expressive, chaotic, and over the top, kind of like Ren & Stimpy (and yeah, that’s the obvious influence), but it probably should’ve stayed its own thing instead of becoming the default look for fab 5.
I’m still not a huge fan of it being used for Runaway Railway either. And extending it into franchises like Toy Story for stuff like the annual pass designs just feels like too much.

With nostalgia being so big right now, I think a return to the older designs would connect more warmly with people. The older designs had a timeless charm, warmth, and innocence that felt naturally Disney, while the Rudish style felt much crazier and more like its own separate universe from the traditional Fab Five.

And I’ll never forgive what they did to my boy Goofy… yuck

Yeah, I think the Runaway Railway decision to use the Rudish designs was pretty short sighted imo, but it really reflects Disney’s broader push for brand synergy, for better or worse

You can see that mentality with the Animation Courtyard redo, which feels like a return to form and is clearly tied to Once Upon a Studio (brand synergy). When I saw the poster for the land, I thought, “oh yeah, that’s Walt’s Mickey,” and it was refreshing to see that classic iteration again rather than the more exaggerated Rudish style version that’s become more common over the past decade. That Mickey design has been largely consistent since the 1940s (up until late 2010s unfortunately), and there’s a reason that design lasted for so long, it was refined and perfected after his early appearances once the studio found its footing. Happy to see him back there, and hopefully that version becomes more prevalent again like it used to be. Below is the poster for context

It's because the tone of Runaway Railway is meant to match the tone of the cartoon shorts, which doesn't work with classic Mickey.

Think of it as essentially these are different characters, and not the same characters drawn differently. TWDC needs classic Mickey to have a clean, wholesome, safe image, they need him to be as warm and welcoming as a cartoon character can be, because he isn't just their mascot, he's their logo, their image summed up, etc. Therefore they can't really do anything particularly funny or entertaining with that version of him or the rest of the Fab 5.

But if you make a cruder version of them, you can put them into cartoons that, while not appropriate of representing the company as a whole, are actually funny and entertaining.

This is pretty spot on. Classic Mickey is…well classic, but he is also not very interesting. Everyone asks why they’ve never done a Mickey Mouse led theatrical film and that’s why. Mickey is a very milquetoast character that is sort of personality-less.

There had to be an entirely new version of him made so he could act completely unlike himself for any sort of entertainment value. And it worked! Those shorts were fantastic. And they only could have been because of it being a distinctly different take.
