Ever since Disneyland opened and especially after Walt Disney World opened, the company has been looking for different concepts to add gates to their resorts. This has brought us to the total of 12 theme parks worldwide. However, when dividing these parks in themed formulas, we find out that there are a few groups of theme park formulas:

Magic Kingdom/ Castle Park: Disneyland, Disney's Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland, Parc Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland and Shanghai Disneyland
California: Disney's California Adventure
Movies/ Studios: Disney's Hollywood Studios, Walt Disney Studios Park
Animals: Disney's Animal Kingdom
World/Innovation: Epcot
SEA: Tokyo DisneySEA

Some of these resorts are screaming for new theme parks (now or later), but what are ideas or themes for new theme parks? So for example what could Hong Kong Disneyland's second gate be?

Now we could of course take a look at the list of unbuilt parks, which leads us to:

Disney's America
Port Disney/ Ocean Park

Next to that we have the rumored themes of future gates like:

Tokyo DisneySKY
Hong Kong Disney's Enchanted Forest

But, what do you think Disney's next step is when it comes to theme park concepts? What do you think are interesting overarching themes for future Disney theme parks?

How about Disney uses this old idea for a few parks?

If I had to guess - long into the future (say 15-20 years) I wouldn't be surprised to see Shanghai get another movie park as their 2nd gate. The Chinese box office has become so critical to films nowadays, inflating global numbers and such, so a park that could showcase film and be centered around it could be something to look out for.

It is certainly a possibility. Im wondering whether Disney would somehow consider a whole new version of a movie park like that after the failure of the two existing parks (although I dont see them as complete failures at all!). There were rumors that Shanghai will receive a second gate which is supposed to be a mix of Animal Kingdom and Epcot. That could be an interesting concept, especially if they manage to successfully incorporate IP into the park without interrupting the level of realism in such themed areas.

I like the idea of theme park based entirely around mythology, folklore, and legends.

Another idea would be to do theme parks based around an entire theme - i.e. a theme park based entirely on say Tomorrowland (with variations of science fiction and the future). Different worlds of adventure. Entire theme parks dedicated to fantasy. You get the drill. Or resorts based entirely on Star Wars, or Marvel, or Studio Ghibli (which I think is actually happening).

Realistically, I can imagine Shanghai and Hong Kong getting second gates, Paris perhaps getting a third, and maybe WDW getting a fifth.

Expanding on this, the entire resort could be a giant Magic Kingdom. Main Street USA is downtown Disney, which you must drive through to reach the plaza with hotels. The giant +200ft castle is the most prestigious hotel, with the rest each themed to their closest park. On each side would be the three parks- Adventureland (combined with Frontierland), Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland, all in their respective places as complete parks.

Well, pure coincident, I do actually have an old idea for a theme park entirely based on various concepts of Tomorrowland called "The Worlds of Tomorrow". I may write it up and put it on the forum.
