What About An Indoor Toon Town?

This is NOT a rumour, merely an idea to be discussed. Many people have posted their disapointment with the removal of Toon Town and have even suggested it be moved to a new location, primarily DHS. What about reimagining the concept almost entirely while reusing some of the existing structures, by setting things up indoors with a controlled environment. Disney could finally give Narnia the boot and create an interactive Toon Town that they are able to control and change. What I mean by this is for part of the day have the Toon buildings and characters be in full colour and in their up to date versions, while the other half of the day guests can interact with older black and white characters in their black and white environments. Obviously the buildings would be fixed and not moved but surely Disney could figure out a way to transition between the two through lighting and special effects. It would be a walkthrough exhibit but could still incorporate Disney staples like meet-and-greets and gift shops. It may also swallow up some crowds since their would be an incentive to visit the attraction twice in one day. The location in the Narnia building would seem ideal since it is close to the animation courtyard and Walt exhibits, and it would be a nice way to pay tribute to and experience the characters that started it all. Maybe the concept and technology is too far fetched, but it was a thought on how to update a poor attraction and re-use some existing sets.

Interesting ideas.... have you considered dropping a letter and send it by snail mail to WDW? Thats the very first step if it is something you believe they might be interested in!

Disney doesn't accept idea submissions from the public, for legal reasons. I've heard that as soon as they realize they're even looking at one, their policy is to immediately stop reading and toss or return it.

That being said, it's not an awful idea. :)

I have been reading these boards for a while, and have read many times that there is no real way to get Disney's attention about an idea. I just thought I would throw it out on the board and see if some discussion might attract the attention of the "insiders". Disney pays people to think up these things, so I am sure they have no interest in some random guy's ideas. Thought it might be fun to discuss for those who feel they are going to miss Toon Town (and want something more added to DHS).

I think there ought to be a Toontown in DHS, especially the version you've created. After all, Disney's "Hollywood Studios" were all started by a cartoon mouse! The black-and-white to color transition idea is excellent, and having the Town as an indoor, perhaps interactive exhibit could be awesome. Personally, I'd like the black-and-white to color idea to take place as visitors stroll through the attraction, rather than have it change over at a different time of day, but that's a minor quibble. The only way I could "plus" your idea is to have the exhibit have something to do with Epic Mickey. But that idea might be better expressed in a dark ride. Anyway, your idea is a great idea that I wish would actually happen. :sohappy:

My initial thought was also to have the environment transition in front of the guests as that would be pretty exciting to see the entire area become washed with colour. I just thought it may be too difficult for Disney and their cast members to pull off, but if the technology was available they could have a transition occur every half hour or hour. I also agree with your Epic Mickey comment, and I can envision the environment to be somewhat like the town in the game in that you have your main street with the buildings flanking each side. I doubt Disney is looking into any Epic Mickey promotions however or they would have tried to capitalize on the game's release. It's a shame because there are some really well done homages to the old cartoons in that game.

I'm not sure if this is more pathetic or insane. (Not what you wrote, but the fact Disney is this strict).

I've worked in customer service/tourism since 2003, and we are always putting ideas & suggestions from our guests to good use. You would think Disney would be appreciative for having customers care & give feedback of how to improve the place. What if my hotel adopted that policy?
Me: "Did you enjoy your stay?"
Guest: "We did, but you really need to add in-room jacuzzis or hot tu..."
Me: "I'm sorry, I cannot hear any more of this for legal reasons. Have a nice day."

And to the OP, I love your ToonTown idea. The Narnia venue would be nice, or maybe you've stumbled across something to finally give Sounds Dangerous a proper burial.

Love the idea!

I used to think about the whole black and white/color contrasted ToonTown, and years ago I used to think that they should add the Roger Rabbit ride to ToonTown Fair and keep that as is at the Magic Kingdom, AND add a 'Classic' black and white styled ToonTown to DHS...but I thought to be different for them to add a Silly Symphonies ride to that one and no Mickey and Minnies houses but instead feature a wacky town with Oswald and Horace and Clarabelle, etc. Would have been a pretty cool place to meet those specific characters and everything! It could have had another play area for the kids too...which seems to be something the DHS could use for the younger crowd.

IF Disney allowed idea submissions for attractions/rides, they would be SWAMPED with thousands of letters DAILY - and IF they put just one of them into place, they'd have dozens of people claiming to have the idea first - and filing lawsuits to get their piece of the $$$$ that the attraction generates.

They can gnd do have this capibility. They pull it off on the cruise lines on a nightly basis. The dining room they do this in the middle of dinner and the wait staff is involved in the whole process. The staff disappears during a musical cue and when they return they are in full color and the lighting is changed and the backgriounds are made into full color. If they can do this in the middle of the ocean they can surly do this on land.

There is a difference between a request, and a flat out idea for a new attraction. Something like what you mentioned, falls into the request idea. Nothing really trademarkable about more hot tubs. Or requesting more characters. So Disney has an intern read that, and pass it on to the marketing/research group.

But a whole new ride/attraction? No way. Look at how many people come out of the wood work after a new movie/book/whatever gets popular. The guy who said that Harry Potter was identical to his Willy the Wizard (or whatever the name was) and he wanted a cut of all the books/merch/movies. If someone sends Disney a concept, and Disney uses it, then Disney may owe that person money, or they may not, but they don't want the legal battle. It is much easier for them to straight out refuse all non solicited ideas. So even though Disney may read the boards, it is more people who look for ways to improve upon the current services offered. I imagine that most people who are directly involved in any sort of actual creative process stay far away from any armchair imagineers to avoid potential conflicts.

I always thought DHS would be a great place for Toon Town. And yes indoors. You could either make it part of the backlot tour or its own location. It would be cool to be on the backlot tour and the land comes alive when your in it.

I agree with you. too bad there are people always trying to make a profit out of anything. If I submitted the idea and disney took it and executed it I would be so proud of just seeing it done. I might have come up with it, but I don't think I would have the resources to materialize it. So what better than to see it come to life in my favorite place on earth?

Feedback and suggestions are different than 'you should build XYZ!'

I really do wish Disney would bring Toon Town back. There is still a large enough fan base out there of people who would love to see that kind of thing (me included, nevermind my kids! LOL). I think DHS would be a great place for it, too, and even though I've never been through the Narnia attraction I definitely agree that Toon Town would be better than something like that- I'm not a fan of the Narnia books/movies at all. LOL

I have never read any of the Narnia stories either, so I can't really comment on them in any sense of their appeal. However the purpose of that attraction it seems was to draw people's attention to the movie. Not only is it now several years old, but Disney dumped the rights to the franchise, and FOX has released the next installment which is already out on dvd. Obviously it is difficult to keep all attractions up to date but this one it feels has long since lost its relevancy.

I was unaware that Disney was already implementing the colour changing technology on their cruise ships. Perhaps they could have an hourly transition for guests then between a black/white and colour environment. A cuckoo clock on the town hall could chime to signal each change, which I think would be a nice "cartoony" element.
