Earthquakes are definitely startling. I've been in quite a few. I was in the 6.8 back in Seattle about 3 years ago. We got lucky with that one - it was fairly deep, and the damage wasn't too extensive. It was definitely an eye-opener, though. And just a month or two ago, we had a 5-something here in San Diego. Just a baby one, no damage. But it was VERY sudden, even for a quake. And loud. I thought someone crashed a car into my building (which, knowing the intersection by my apartment, was quite possible...) While it wasn't really scary, it was so sudden, and so loud, that it made me jump - like someone yelling in your ear and startling you when it's dead quiet. The hardest part about quakes, though, is that you never know how long it'll last. I remember sitting under the table during the 6.8 and wondering how long it was going to last, or if it would keep getting worse.
