I thought this was interesting...

This newly patented ride system is called “Twister Ride System” and was developed by Imagineers David Crawford and Ed Nemeth. It looks very cool and will most likely make its first appearance as the main component of a new Pixar “Planes” attraction. The ride consists of a vehicle that rotates along a 360 degree axis in a tunnel where video can be displayed on the walls. These images will follow a travel path parallel to the axis so the passenger in a vehicle will have the sensation of forward motion. Add a big fan at one end and you’re flying!

Its rotation will either be pre-programmed or controlled by the guest, like on Dumbo.

Yeah, I was checking that out last night (subscribe to the newsletter!) and it looks pretty interesting. Unfortunately Disney has a habit of developing awesome looking rides aaaaaaaand then shelving them. Hopefully that won't happen with this, but one has to wonder about capacity on this model.

Crap, I had my own ride idea similar to that I made last year....Disney keeps stealing my ideas  (ok, not really as I never published my concept)

Anyway, here's what I designed, might as well make it public, right?

The interesting thing is that my ride system was designed for counterbalancing, because I figured that without counterbalancing, there could be a major strain on the track. I also created the counterweight on the other side to move in and out depending on the weight of the guests, so it would be truly more balanced.

This could be really cool for an Astro Orbiter re-do replacing the laugh floor. (It looks like a Kign Kong 360 3D tunnel with a carousel track with spinner vehicles and ride functions

My guess is if this were to be built, it would go in California Adventure and overseas first...They would most likely add it to the Condor Flats area to help overflow traffic to Soarin.

Could be interesting in relation to Avatar given the amount of "flight" scenes in that work. Although I would hope that any ride associated with that project is well passed the concept stage.

For what it's worth...on almost all Disney patents, the hypothetical ride vehicle shown is shaped like an airplane or a boat. I wouldn't read too much into this that this would actually be airplane-themed if it's ever built.

And that's a big if - WDI patents ride systems all the time without necessarily having plans to put them to use:

Well- w/ the new Planes movie coming out this summer, hopefully it'll be a success, and they'll be thinking about adding it to DHS!;)

Just build something! Refurb something! Anything is better than nothing! I want to experience a Disney rebirth before I'm dead.

BTW: I like the plane ride concept, very cool!

Very neat ride system but if you were worried about counterbalancing the ride vehicle why not just have another rider compartment on the otherside (Similar to a B&M wing coaster), it would help counterbalance the ride vehicle and it would also double the ride capacity.

True, but I was thinking the guests could control the direction.
